Personalised ILM peeling for Myopic traction maculopathy.

PURPOSE: To introduce a novel ILM peeling technique for S2 and S3 retinoschisis, termed 'Personalised ILM peeling', which selectively peels the ILM only within the schisis area while minimising postoperative complications. METHODS: 10 eyes from 9 patients with MRS underwent 'Personalised ILM peeling'. Preoperatively, the OCT radial scans, 3D Wide scans and retinal thickness map were comprehensively evaluated to delineate the extent of the schisis area and determine the specific region requiring ILM peel. Pre- and postoperative visual acuity, retinal thickness, including retinoschisis height,

Premium Intraocular Lenses and Their Impact on Visual Field Assessment: A Narrative Review.

Premium intraocular lens (IOL) such as enhanced monofocal, extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) and multifocal IOL has become increasing popular due to its ability to treat pseudophakic presbyopia and it also offers a spectacle-free lifestyle. However, the difference in light focality between these types of lenses may affect post operative outcomes, such as the worsening of visual field defects. From the existing literature, seven articles were selected for inclusion in this review to determine the effect of these presbyopia-correcting lenses on visual field assessment. Inclusion criteria included a

Behind the Sella: A Rare Case of Pituicytoma Mimicking a Pituitary Adenoma.

BACKGROUND Pituicytoma is a rare central nervous system (CNS) World Health Organization (WHO) grade I glioma originating from pituicytes, the specialized glial cells of the neurohypophysis or infundibulum. It accounts for less than 0.1% of all sellar and suprasellar masses and often presents a diagnostic challenge because of its clinical and radiological resemblance to other pituitary lesions. CASE REPORT A 48-year-old man was admitted to the endocrinology clinic because of clinical symptoms of hypogonadism, headaches, and visual field defects. Hormonal evaluation revealed hypogonadotropic hyp

Optic Neuropathy Associated with Recreational Abuse of Nitrous Oxide: A Retrospective Case Series.

Background/Objectives: Nitrous oxide is known to cause neurological damage. We investigated the potential effects of nitrous oxide (N2O) abuse on the optic nerve through comprehensive ophthalmological evaluation of patients diagnosed with N2O-related neurological disorders. Methods: This retrospective, monocentric case series included patients hospitalized for N2O-related neurological manifestations in the neurology department of a French tertiary care center. Suspected optic neuropathy was defined as abnormal retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness according t

Keratomalacia in a Neonate Born to a Mother with Night Blindness: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Xerophthalmia, caused by vitamin A deficiency, is a significant public health problem that can lead to severe ocular surface damage, including keratomalacia and permanent blindness if not promptly treated. CASE: A 26-day-old male neonate presented with bilateral corneal clouding ten days after birth. Ocular examination revealed corneal xerosis in both eyes and a corneal perforation in the right eye, which was sealed with iris tissue. The mother reported a history of night blindness during the third trimester of pregnancy, suggestive of maternal vitamin A deficiency. OBSERVATION

Recurrent Dedifferentiated Clival Chondrosarcoma Presenting 32 Years after Initial Treatment: A Case Report.

Background Skull base chondrosarcomas are rare and locally aggressive tumors with heterogeneous biology accounting for 0.1-0.2% of all intracranial tumors. Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma is an exceptionally uncommon and aggressive variant, seldom seen at the skull base. We report a recurrent clival chondrosarcoma with a small, dedifferentiated component, and an unusually long latency after initial treatment. Case Report A 66-year-old woman was referred with a recurrent progressive clival lesion, initially suspected to be a chordoma. She had undergone subtotal resection followed by single-frac

Diagnostic Diplopia: Isolated Oculomotor Nerve Palsy With Normal Imaging.

A 51-year-old man presented with progressive, subacute diplopia and ophthalmoplegia. Examination by the hospitalist demonstrated right ophthalmoplegia on left lateral gaze. No neurologist or neuro-ophthalmologist was available. Imaging and laboratory work were largely unremarkable. Although a microvascular etiology was suspected, the unremarkable workup expanded the differential diagnosis, highlighting the diagnostic and management challenges of cranial nerve III palsy when imaging is unremarkable in a community hospital with limited resources.

[Parinaud syndrome : a diplopia unlike any other].

Sudden-onset diplopia warrants an emergency management in ophthalmology. A binocular, vertical and persistent diplopia, should raise suspicion of a central lesion, particularly within the brainstem. We reporte the case of a 53-year-old man, who presented with acute vertical binocular diplopia. Ophthalmological examination revealed a bilateral elevation limitation, characteristic of Parinaud's syndrome. Brain magnetic resonance imaging identified a right-sided ischemic midbrain infarction, and further cardiovascular work-up demonstrated a patent foramen ovale causing a right-to-left shunt.

Systematic Review and Pooled Analysis of Falcotentorial Meningiomas: Clinical Features, Surgical Techniques, and Postoperative Outcomes.

Falcotentorial meningiomas (FTMs) account for a small proportion of intracranial meningiomas. They originate from the falcotentorial junction, a region where critical venous structures and deep brain regions intersect, making surgical resection challenging. Current literature on FTM consists mainly of isolated case reports and small case series, focusing primarily on surgical techniques. This systematic review aims to consolidate and analyze the clinical characteristics, surgical approaches, and outcomes of FTM cases to offer evidence-based insights that can guide clinicians in managing this r

Genetic characterization of inherited retinal dystrophy in a Northwestern Chinese cohort: A single-center study over a 5-year period in Shaanxi, China.

OBJECTIVE: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a clinically and molecularly heterogeneous group of monogenic disorders that cause vision loss across all age groups. This study set out to define the mutational landscape of IRDs among patients evaluated at a tertiary center in Northwest China. METHODS: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed in 116 patients with IRDs enrolled at our ophthalmic center over a five-year recruitment period. Of these, 92 underwent whole-exome sequencing (WES) and the remaining 24 were analyzed with a targeted hereditary eye disease enrichment panel (HEDEP).

Does the stria of Gennari integrity reflect acquired visual field defects?

Visual input reaches the primary visual cortex (V1) at the stria of Gennari, a band of highly myelinated fibers at the level of layer IV. Damage to the visual pathways can cause visual field defects (scotomas) that prevent visual input from reaching V1. Here, we evaluate whether the stria of Gennari degrades in the absence of visual input. Using 7 Tesla MRI, we investigate the integrity of the stria of Gennari in case of acquired homonymous visual field defects, in particular hemianopia: the loss of vision in half of the visual field. These visual field defects allow us to compare stria of Gen

Infected Frontal Sinus Mucocele Mimicking a Cutaneous Abscess.

Frontal sinus mucoceles are benign expansile lesions that may progressively erode the surrounding bone and extend toward the orbit or intracranial compartment. When expansion occurs anteriorly, however, they may present as an apparently superficial forehead swelling and be mistaken for a cutaneous abscess. A 77-year-old woman with chronic sinusitis developed recurrent left paramedian frontal swelling over several months, with only transient improvement following antibiotic treatment. The lesion was initially interpreted as a cutaneous abscess and incised in an outpatient setting. Clear, nonpur

Orbital Fracture Repair Materials: Research Hotspots, Clinical Applications, and Emerging Technologies.

Orbital fractures, particularly of the medial and inferior walls, often require precise reconstruction to restore orbital volume and prevent enophthalmos, diplopia, and facial deformity. The selection of repair material, ranging from titanium meshes and porous polyethylene to resorbable polymers and tissue-engineered scaffolds, is therefore central to surgical success, yet a clinically oriented synthesis of the available options remains lacking. This study combines a bibliometric mapping with a focused review of repair materials to chart how the field has evolved and to clarify the relationshi
