Is There a Role for Sodium Fluoride in Otosclerosis Treatment?

Various reports have investigated the role of NaF for stabilizing SNHL in the setting of otosclerosis; however, there currently remains no established practice guideline or widespread consensus. The purpose of this paper is to interpret the literature to determine best practices for the use of NaF in otosclerosis management.

Isolated outpatient ossiculoplasty under potentialized local anesthesia and general anesthesia: Comparative STROBE analysis of early results.

OBJECTIVES: To compare early results in isolated ossiculoplasty under potentialized local anesthesia and general anesthesia. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A single-center retrospective observational study included 123 consecutive patients treated by isolated ossiculoplasty between September 1, 2019 and March 1, 2021 in a French private hospital. The main aim was to compare the management pathway (operating room time, hospital stay, outpatient management rate, "by-pass" rate of direct return to the outpatient department without passing through the recovery room) according to potentialized local anesthe

Learning Curve for CO2 Laser Stapedotomy: A Single-Surgeon Experience in South Korea.

OBJECTIVE: Mastering otosclerosis surgery is challenging, especially in low-prevalence Asian populations. This study defines the learning curve for a single surgeon's first 100 consecutive CO2 laser-assisted stapedotomies by analyzing audiometric and complication outcomes. Despite widespread descriptions of laser-assisted stapes surgery, there is a paucity of data examining the learning process in low-incidence, low-volume regions like East Asia. We aim to characterize the unique challenges and surgical adaptations required in such an environment. METHODS: A retrospective review of 100 primar

Vestibular granuloma as a rare post-stapedotomy complication: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular granuloma is a rare complication of a common surgical procedure, such as stapedotomy; it can significantly impact the outcome of surgery, leading to severe impairment and deterioration in the patient's quality of life. CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old male underwent stapedotomy with a titanium prosthesis. Initially, hearing function improved but, within days, the patient developed vertigo and worsened hearing loss. HR CT of temporal bone revealed soft tissue in the tympanic cavity, prompting revision surgery. Granulomatous tissue surrounding the prosthesis was removed, leadin

Artificial intelligence for otosclerosis detection on temporal bone CT: a diagnostic study.

BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is a primary osteodystrophy of the otic capsule that causes conductive or mixed hearing loss. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is the preferred imaging tool, but its sensitivity varies and depends on radiologist expertise. Artificial intelligence (AI) may improve diagnostic accuracy by identifying subtle features. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a convolutional neural network (CNN) in detecting otosclerosis on temporal bone CT scans. METHODS: This retrospective study included CT scans from 53 surgically confirmed otosclerosis patients and

Knowledge and perception of otosclerosis among women in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is a bone disease of the ear that primarily affects women and can lead to progressive hearing loss. Delays in diagnosis and treatment may occur due to limited awareness of the condition. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and perception of otosclerosis among women in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted over 3 months, including 508 Saudi women aged 18 years and above. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 30. The Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to examine differences in knowledge an

FEA Simulation of Crimping Pressure Distribution in Titanium and Teflon Stapedotomy Prostheses.

Stapedotomy is performed to restore ossicular chain sound transmission by inserting a piston prosthesis that couples the long process of the incus to the oval window, thereby addressing conductive hearing loss associated with otosclerosis. This study investigates the effects of crimping force, prosthesis material, and loop geometry on incus to optimize fixation while minimizing complications such as incudal necrosis. Finite element analyses were performed to quantify interface pressures and von Mises stresses for titanium prostheses with loop-band widths of 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5 mm under crimping

Improved Bone Conduction and Hearing Outcomes After Stapes Surgery for Otosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the improvement in bone conduction (BC) thresholds after stapes surgery for otosclerosis, compare the outcomes of surgical techniques, and analyze the short- and long-term results to inform treatment strategies. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from 173 patients (188 ears) who underwent total stapedectomy, partial stapedectomy, or stapedotomy for otosclerosis between 2009 and 2024. Medical histories, preoperative evaluations, and operative records were analyzed, focusing on pre- and postoperative pure-tone audiometry. RESULTS: Postoperatively, mean thresholds

Sensitivity of High-resolution Computed Tomography of Temporal Bone in the Diagnosis of Otosclerosis.

Background Otosclerosis is a common cause of hearing loss and manifests as stapedial and cochlear variant on computed tomography. Objective To determine the sensitivity of High-Resolution Computed Tomography of temporal bone in patients with surgically confirmed otosclerosis. Method A cross-sectional study was performed between October, 2020 to March, 2024 in a tertiary center. Patients aged 18 to 60 years who underwent stapedotomy were included in the study and pre-operative High Resolution Computed Tomography of the temporal bone were interpreted. Subjective Visual Vertical Can be an Effective Tool to Evaluate Vestibular Function of Stapedotomy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if the subjective visual vertical/horizontal (SVV/SVH) can be used to evaluate the otolith organ of otosclerosis and stapedotomy. DESIGN: A total of 19 patients who were diagnosed with otosclerosis and underwent surgical treatment in our hospital were collected. Based on the postoperative vertigo difference, we evaluated the otolith organ function between preoperative and postoperative SVV/SVH degrees between the dizzy and non-dizzy groups. RESULTS: Patients who complained of dizziness after prosthesis implantation generally have worse SVV and SVH results than those

Stapedotomy in Otosclerosis: A GRADE-Guided Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Endoscopy vs. Microscopy.

OBJECTIVE: A definitive comparison between endoscopic and microscopic techniques in stapes surgery for otosclerosis patients regarding safety and efficacy, we exclusively included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and applied the GRADE methodology to assess the certainty of the evidence in our conclusions. DATABASES REVIEWED: A search across PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library was conducted from inception to December 2024. We included only RCTs that compared both techniques of stapes surgery in otosclerosis patients. METHODS: Primary outcomes were change in air-bone gap (A

Relationship between ultra-high-resolution computed tomography score of oval window region involvement and audiometry in otosclerosis.

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between the ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (U-HRCT) score of oval window region (OWR) involvement and audiometry in otosclerosis. METHODS: This study enrolled patients with clinically suspected otosclerosis who underwent U-HRCT examination. The analysis included 71 ears from 50 patients (mean age, 38.0 [34.0-49.8] years). The ears were divided into the conductive hearing loss group (group A, 20 ears) and mixed hearing loss group (group B, 51 ears).
