The neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus biomarker landscape: what blood and cerebrospinal fluid analytes have been studied and how they performed? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate biomarkers that discriminate systemic lupus erythematosus patients with and without neuropsychiatric involvement. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL (inception-March 2024) for studies of blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analytes in neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted for analyte-biofluid pairs with ≥5 independent studies; the remaining data were synthesized narratively. RESULTS: A total of 93 studies were included. Few analyte-biofluid combinations met the criteria for meta-

The Epidemiological Characteristics of 55 Multiple-Victim Incidents Involving Bites from a Single Dog - Shandong Province, China, 2025.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Rabies is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by rabies virus infection and was classified as a Class B notifiable infectious disease in China. Events involving multiple victims bitten by a single dog represent a distinct category in rabies epidemiological surveillance and risk assessment. These incidents indicate high-probability point-source exposure to potentially rabid animals and thus pose urgent public health threats. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of events involving multiple victims bitte

Epidemiological Characteristics and Spatial Clustering of Single-Dog-Induced Multiple Human Exposure Events - Chongqing, China, 2016-2025.

INTRODUCTION: Single-dog-induced multiple human exposure events can result in multiple potential rabies exposures within a short period, with substantial public health and economic costs. In China, these events are managed under nationally standardized procedures and require a coordinated public health and animal health response. This study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and response gaps associated with these events in Chongqing from 2016 to 2025. METHODS: Data on events, offending dogs, and exposed persons were collected from investigation rep

Investigation and Response to a Single Cat Injuring Multiple People - Shandong Province, China, 2026.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Rabies is an almost universally fatal zoonosis; dogs remain China's main human exposure source. Cats are generally not persistent rabies reservoirs; most feline infections result from spillover from rabid dogs or wildlife. However, feline rabies has been documented worldwide. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This report describes a laboratory-confirmed incident in which one stray cat successively attacked two people in Shandong Province, China, in 2026. Rabies virus nucleic acid was detected in cat brain and saliva specimens; whole-genome sequencing show

When Psychosis Masks Neurodegeneration: A Case of Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

We present a diagnostically challenging case of a 57-year-old male with new-onset persecutory delusions, hallucinations, functional decline, and gait instability following recent travel. While psychiatric features are recognised in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), they are often underappreciated as initial manifestations, leading to misdiagnosis and delayed recognition. Initially suspected to have a primary psychotic disorder, the patient's rapidly progressive course, neurological signs, characteristic MRI findings, and positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) real-time quaking-induced conversion (R

The ups and downs of human UNC93B1: Autoimmune and viral conditions.

Mouse Unc93b1 was identified in 2006 by forward genetics as an ER membrane protein essential for the activity of the endosomal nucleic acid-sensing receptors TLR3, TLR7, and TLR9. In vitro studies in mouse and human cells have revealed its cellular functions, including ER-based stabilization and trafficking of endosomal TLR proteins (TLR3, TLR7, TLR8, and TLR9) and regulation of signaling thresholds through competitive trafficking control (TLR7 and TLR9). Human genetic studies have clarified the physiological role of UNC93B1 in natural conditions. Biallelic loss-of-function UNC93B1 mutations i

Lyme Disease and Other Tick-Borne Infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The neurologic manifestations of selected tick-transmitted infections in North America and Eurasia were reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS: Both Powassan virus in North America, and Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) virus in Eurasia can cause encephalitis, often with significant neurologic morbidity. Lyme disease, Ehrlichia chaffeensis (the cause of human monocytic ehrlichiosis [HME]), and Borrelia miyamotoi infections can cause meningitis (the third primarily in immunocompromised individuals). Patients with Lyme disease may also develop cranial neuropathy, and/or radiculoneuropathy. Ti

Astrocytic expression of interferon-induced myxovirus resistance protein A and protein kinase R in prion diseases: Distinct plaque-associated myxovirus resistance protein A localization in Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease.

Human prion diseases, including sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) and Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease (GSS), are fatal neurodegenerative disorders characterized by misfolded prion protein (PrP) accumulation. Although type I interferon (IFN) signaling and downstream IFN-stimulated genes are well characterized as essential components of host defense in experimental animal models, their roles in human prion pathology remain poorly defined. Myxovirus resistance protein A (MxA) and protein kinase R (PKR) have immunomodulatory functions, yet their histopathological expression in prion

Immunogenicity and safety of an interchangeable vaccination schedule of two inactivated Japanese encephalitis vaccines: a multicentric, phase IV, open-label, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In India, two inactivated Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccines, JENVAC and JEEV, are used in childhood immunization program as a two-dose schedule. Vaccine supply interruptions and population mobility can result in children receiving different products for their first and second doses. We assessed immunogenicity and safety of mixed-product vaccine schedules. METHODS: In this multicentric, open-label, phase 4, non-inferiority randomized trial conducted during November 11, 2023-September 2, 2025, infants aged 9-12 months were assigned (1:1:1:1) to JENVAC-JEEV, JENVAC-JENVAC, JEEV-JEN

MicroRNA Responses Associated with Vector-Borne Diseases in Humans and Arthropod Vectors: A Systematic Review.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) represent a significant public health challenge. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective disease management and control, with host-encoded microRNAs (miRNAs) emerging as promising disease biomarkers. This systematic review surveys research conducted on miRNA responses in disease vectors and human hosts of VBDs. A systematic search of four databases and manual searching identified 93 qualifying articles. Numerous VBDs were described, with the most common focus on dengue (21%; n = 15) and Chagas disease (11%; n = 8). Twenty-eight in vivo human studies h

Screening human brain targets for Japanese encephalitis virus NS5 via yeast two-hybrid assay.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is the most important vaccine-preventable acute meningoencephalitis in tropical and subtropical Asia with no known antiviral therapeutics. Available vaccines offer limited protection against emerging Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) genotypes, posing a persistent public health threat. Disruption of the interactions between JEV non-structural protein 5 (NS5) protein and human brain cellular proteins could be explored to develop flavivirus druggable host targets. This study aimed to identify the human brain cellular proteins that interact with the JEV NS5 protein. A h

Central Nervous System Reservoirs and HIV Cure: Therapeutic Opportunities and Challenges.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite viral suppression with antiretroviral therapy, people with HIV (PWH) remain at increased risk of neurocognitive impairment, neuroinflammation, and potential viral rebound following therapy interruption. Although the central nervous system (CNS) is a recognised HIV reservoir, it is often not fully considered in cure approaches. RECENT FINDINGS: HIV DNA and ongoing viral transcription persist in the CNS of ART-suppressed PWH, potentially contributing to neuroinflammation and neurocognitive dysfunction. HIV cure strategies, including latency-reversing/promoting agents,

Clinical and metagenomic characterization of HHV-6 versus HHV-7 encephalitis in immunocompetent children.

BACKGROUND: Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) are betaherpesviruses that can cause encephalitis/encephalopathy in immunocompetent children. However, early clinical manifestations, routine laboratory tests, and neuroimaging findings often lack specificity, making etiological characterization challenging. This study aimed to characterize the clinical features and metagenomic findings of HHV-6 and HHV-7 encephalitis in immunocompetent children. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included children (<18 years) with suspected central nervous system infe

Viral metagenomic characterization of HAdV-B-related signals in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from pediatric and adult clinical cohorts.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) is an important respiratory virus in children, but sequence-level evidence for HAdV-related signals in lower respiratory tract samples remains limited. In this study, we analyzed metagenomic next-generation sequencing data from 189 bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) libraries from pediatric and adult clinical cohorts, including 30 pediatric and 159 adult patients, together with laboratory environmental controls. MEGAN read-level classification was used to screen for Adenoviridae-related signals. HAdV-related contigs were further reviewed, and a BALF-derived HAdV-B-rela

Effects of West Nile Virus on behavioral and cognitive performance, circadian body temperatures, cortical Aβ and p-tau pathology, and immune measures in human apoE and human amyloid precursor protein NL-G-F/human apoE mice.

INTRODUCTION: There are three human apolipoprotein E (E) isoforms: E2, E3, and E4. Compared with E3, E4 is an AD risk factor. West Nile Virus (WNV) can cause neurological disease, and it results in some neuropathology and neuroinflammation seen in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previously, we reported on the effects of exposure to the Kunjin strain (KUNV) of WNV in middle-aged knock-in (KI) mice expressing human amyloid precursor protein (APP) containing the dominant NL-G-F mutations with human apoE targeted replacement (TR) mice on behavioral, immune, and pathological measures, and circadian body
