Skeletal muscle mass and inflammation-based prognostic score as prognostic factors in oral cancer.

Tumour-related malnutrition and impaired oral intake contribute to skeletal muscle loss in patients with oral cancer. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of pre-treatment skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and inflammation-based prognostic score (IBPS) on the prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A total of 285 patients who underwent curative treatment for OSCC between 2010 and 2019 were included. SMM was evaluated as the cross-sectional area of the bilateral sternocleidomastoid muscles at the third cervical vertebra level (C3). IBPS included neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR

Poor Diet and Oral Cavity Cancer Risk in Smoking and Non-Smoking Men and Women: An Analysis of Three US Cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: Oral cavity cancer (OCC) incidence is rising among non-smokers and younger individuals without traditional risk factors. While carcinogenic exposures such as tobacco and alcohol are well studied, the association between unhealthy dietary patterns and OCC has been minimally explored. This study evaluated the association between dietary patterns and OCC risk in men and women. METHODS: This prospective cohort study used data from three large U.S. longitudinal cohorts: the Nurses' Health Study (n = 68 715, 1986-2016), Nurses' Health Study II (n = 93 887, 1991-2017), and the Health P

Changes in Time to Diagnosis of HPV + Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Timely referral to subspecialty care remains critical for expedited work up and treatment of HPV+ oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPSCC). It is not known if there have been changes in time to diagnosis as the incidence of this disease rises. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 312 patients treated for HPV+ OPSCC at a tertiary referral clinic between 2013 and 2022. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in time to diagnosis based on year of presentation (p < 0.001). More patients presented with early-stage disease (AJCC 7 Stage I or II) over time (p = 0.002). Presenting symptom (

Proteomic signatures of equine dental tooth tissues in ageing and disease.

BACKGROUND: Ageing and dental disease in horses lead to structural and functional deterioration of dental tissues, yet their molecular signatures remain poorly characterised. Understanding how these processes alter the protein composition of enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp is essential for improving equine oral health and identifying biomarkers of degeneration. OBJECTIVES: To characterise the proteomic profiles of equine dental tissues and determine age- and disease-associated changes, with the aim of identifying proteins consistently altered across conditions. STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo proteo

Vision-weighted diagnostic gain (VWDG) in the diagnosis of oral malignant and potentially malignant lesions: A multimodal comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of oral malignant lesions is essential for improving outcomes in head and neck oncology, yet overlapping clinical features often hinder recognition. Multimodal large language models (LLMs), which integrate text and image inputs, may provide adjunctive diagnostic support. We applied vision-weighted diagnostic gain (VWDG), a novel metric to quantify the added value of visual input, in a comparative evaluation of ChatGPT-5 and Gemini Pro 2.5. METHODS: A paired diagnostic accuracy study was conducted on 150 biopsy-confirmed oral lesions, comparing ChatGPT-5 (OpenAI) an

Submental Island Flap Versus Free Flap Reconstruction in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma After Neoadjuvant Immunochemotherapy: A Propensity Score Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The optimal reconstructive approach following neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy (NICT) and surgery for locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains debated. This study compared pedicled submental island flap (SIF) and free flap (FF) reconstruction in this contemporary treatment setting. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective comparative study of 212 consecutive patients with locally advanced OSCC treated with NICT followed by surgery. Propensity score matching (1:1) yielded a balanced cohort of 54 SIF and 54 FF patients. Outcomes included disease-free survival (DFS), o

Lower intradaily rest-activity variability is associated with severe periodontitis: A cross-sectional wrist-accelerometry study.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral research on periodontitis has largely emphasized sleep duration and activity volume, whereas the 24-hour temporal organization of movement and rest remains understudied. We examined wrist-accelerometry-derived intradaily variability (IV) in relation to severe periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 4,631 adults aged 30 years or older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014. Participants had wrist-accelerometry data and an evaluable full-mouth periodontal examination. Severe periodontitis was defined using the

Immigrant background as a determinant of caries development in Swedish children.

INTRODUCTION: Inequalities in oral health persist, particularly in highly developed countries, where socioeconomic status is an important explanatory factor. Previous analyses identified immigrant background as a determinant of dental caries development. The present study further explored this association by investigating the influence of home language and the income classification of the country or region of origin on caries development. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal cohort study followed 3,402 children who lived in 23 socioeconomically disadvantaged areas in Stockholm, Sweden, from

Influence of Three-Year Peri-Implant Maintenance Compliance on Clinical and Radiographic Outcomes: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Peri-Implant Disease Prevalence.

The long-term success of dental implants depends not only on osseointegration but also on maintaining peri-implant tissue health and overall human health and wellbeing. Despite predictable survival rates, peri-implant diseases such as mucositis and peri-implantitis remain prevalent due to poor plaque control, contributing to oral infectious disease and illness. Peri-implant maintenance therapy (PIMT) is essential for disease prevention through regular monitoring and intervention, supporting public health, preventive medicine, and long-term patient wellbeing. The aim of the study was to evaluat

[Indications for autotransplantation of teeth].

Autotransplantation of teeth offers a biologically sustainable solution for tooth replacement when (strategic) teeth are missing. It can therefore be a valuable treatment option in selected cases. However, autotransplantation is still often not considered due to its specific indications. Common situations in which autotransplantation may be a desirable treatment include mandibular premolar agenesis, premature loss of (anterior) teeth, and orthodontically complex impacted teeth. Dentistry has developed to such an extent in recent decades that it has long since become impossible for a single pra

The Oral Virome in Dental Caries: From Ecological Disruptors to Therapeutic Opportunities.

Dental caries results from ecological dysbiosis of oral biofilms driven by frequent sugar exposure, yet the role of viruses, particularly bacteriophages, in this process remains underexplored. This review synthesizes current evidence on how the oral virome contributes to caries pathogenesis and examines emerging phage-based therapeutic strategies. The oral cavity harbors diverse viral communities, including eukaryotic viruses (herpesviruses, papillomaviruses) and prokaryotic viruses (bacteriophages). While herpesviruses like EBV, CMV, and HSV-1 do not directly demineralize teeth, they may act
