Since the effect of cellular calcium on cell injury has been in question, this study focused on the relationship between tissue calcium content and cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcer. Rats treated with cysteamine showed a high frequency and severity of duodenal ulcer, and the calcium content in the duodenal mucosa was elevated. Furthermore, the level of calcium content in duodenal mucosa was positively associated with the severity of the duodenal lesion. We studied the effect of adjuvant hepatic arterial chemotherapy with THP-adriamycin (THP) and carboplatin (CBDCA) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Gastric contents was examined in 49 patients with duodenal bulb ulcers. Helicobacter pylori were isolated in 83.7% of cases. H. pylori density was found to be 10(3)-10(5) microbial cells per ml. Bacterioscopic studies with gram staining helped detect H. pylori in 79.6% of cases, cultural method revealed the bacteria in 63.3%, and urease test in 4.1% of cases. Levels of gexosamines, free oxiprolin, gexuronic acids, malonic dialdehyd, reduced glutathione and total content of gexosamines in blood as well as spontaneous chemiluminescence of blood serum were studied in 89 patients with duodenal ulcer during rehabilitative treatment and in 35 healthy subjects. Rehabilitative stage-by-stage treatment was demonstrated to ensure normalization of anti-radical protective systems of the body, beneficially influence connective tissue structures of gastric and duodenal mucosa, prevent exacerbation of the disease.

Biopsy material of gastric mucosa obtained from 94 patients with rheumatic diseases was subjected to bacterioscopic, biochemical and microbiological studies. Helicobacter pylori was found in 29% of patients with rheumatism, in 34.3% of patients with rheumatic arthritis and in 39.9% of those suffering from osteoarthrosis deformans. The study confirms that the microorganisms found in gastric and duodenal mucosa should be considered as a saprophytic microflora which promotes inflammatory process.

60 patients with exacerbated gastric and duodenal ulcer were studied. Summary clinical effect was significantly better (by 12.34%, P < 0.05) in patients who were co-administered actovegin as compared to those who received conventional treatment (cholinolytics, antacids, reparative drugs and preparations of bismuth). The first group demonstrated more vigorous amelioration of pain, endoscopic involution and disappearance of disseminated intravascular coagulation signs as well as shorter hospital time.

We studied the incidence of infection with Helicobacter pylori in Panamanians with chronic dyspepsia, gastric or duodenal ulcer, gastritis or gastric cancer. The histopathology was positive in 54 (81%) of 66 patients; the urea test was positive in 52 (82.5%) of 63 cases; the impromptu was positive in 51 (79.6) of 64 patients; the endoscopic examination was positive in 64 (82.9%) of 77 examinations.

Dysplasia of gastric stump mucosa in 35 cases was studied. Evaluation of the entero-gastric reflux index(EGRI) was carried out by a computer radioisotope scanning. Dysplasia nuclear DNA content was measured using an automatic image analysis system. A prospective study to evaluate the radiologic and sonographic features of intraabdominal abscesses in a mixed Nigerian population was undertaken. 30 patients with suspected abscesses were studied and a total of 70 abdominal abscess sites were confirmed at surgery or during autopsy in 22 patients. The medline database was applied to search all randomized clinical trials published from 1986 to 1992 concerning the use of Nizatidine, a powerful H2-antagonist, versus other treatments, including placebo, in the treatment of duodenal ulcer disease. Therapeutic efficacy of nizatidine is comparable to that of other H2-antagonists; with the use of meta-analysis, no significant differences were demonstrated, both in acute and long-term treatment of duodenal ulcer between nizatidine and ranitidine, but untoward side effects were less frequent with nizatidine than with ranitidine.
