Scleroderma-Like Skin Changes and Multifocal Muscle Thickening in a Patient with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic rheumatic manifestations may precede the diagnosis of an occult malignancy and closely mimic primary autoimmune connective-tissue diseases. Scleroderma-like manifestations have rarely been reported in association with lymphoid malignancies, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old woman presented with progressive skin thickening, difficulty walking, reduced appetite, and weight loss. She had been diagnosed with scleroderma by an outside physician in early 2024 and had been treated with methotrexate 15 mg once weekly. Physical

Scrotal Reconstruction Following Excision of Idiopathic Scrotal Calcinosis: A Rare Condition with a Psychological Impact-A Case Report.

Idiopathic scrotal calcinosis (ISC) is a rare and benign disorder occurring in the absence of a systemic disorder of calcium-phosphate metabolism. It presents in childhood or early adulthood, and affected individuals present with multiple, asymptomatic calcified nodules on the scrotum. We report the case of a 38-year-old man who presented via referral from the dermatologist to the plastic surgery clinic with a 22-year history of multiple scrotal nodules. The examination revealed multiple hard nodules in his scrotal skin. Following evaluation, he underwent scrotal excision with scrotoplasty. Hi

Tissue calcinosis in dermatomyositis - potential role of combination therapy with JAK inhibitors. Case report and literature review.

Calcinosis is a disabling and difficult-to-treat complication of adult dermatomyositis (DM), juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), and systemic sclerosis (SSc), for which no standardized therapy is currently available. Growing evidence implicating JAK/STAT signaling in dermatomyositis has prompted interest in Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) as a therapeutic option. We describe a 52-year-old woman with long-standing juvenile-onset dermatomyositis and extensive, treatment-refractory calcinosis who received off-label baricitinib after multiple previous therapies. After one month, the patient reported im

Inappropriate Use of Tumor Markers in Asymptomatic Patients: A Systematic Review and Proposed Follow-Up Algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Serum tumor markers such as CA 125, CA 19-9, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), and CA 15-3 are widely available, inexpensive, and easily measured, which has led to their inappropriate use for cancer screening in asymptomatic individuals. Despite guideline recommendations against this practice, these tests remain common, contributing to false positives, unnecessary anxiety, and avoidable invasive procedures. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and LILACS from inception to May 10, 2025, identifying studies evaluating the use

Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis as the initial presentation of paraneoplastic anti-TIF1-γ dermatomyositis.

We report a rare case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis as the initial manifestation of paraneoplastic dermatomyositis in a 50-year-old man subsequently diagnosed with diffuse large B cell lymphoma, in the absence of any identifiable drug exposure. The patient presented with periorbital edema, progressive dusky blistering eruption (Nikolsky sign positive), mucositis, and histopathology consistent with Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis. Over the following weeks, he developed proximal muscle weakness, elevated creatine kinase, and cutaneous signs of dermato

Cutaneous clues to diagnosis: the vasculopathic form of anti-MDA5dermatomyositis.

Anti- melanocyte differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5) associated dermatomyositis is a rare, heterogeneous disease with multiple phenotypes. This case describes a patient with indolent myopathy, skin lesions and normal creatine kinase (CK). After a period of diagnostic uncertainty, the patient was found to have positive anti-MDA5 and anti-Ro52 antibodies, confirming anti-MDA5 dermatomyositis with cutaneous vasculopathy. Recognition of vasculopathy as a manifestation of dermatomyositis could have led to a much earlier diagnosis. The European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology /Amer

Clinical and Autoantibody Profile of Inflammatory Myopathies in a Mexican Cohort: A Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are a group of autoimmune diseases characterized by muscle inflammation and systemic features. Although autoantibody profiling has improved disease classification, regional data from Latin America remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and serological characteristics of a Mexican cohort. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of adult patients who met the 2017 EULAR/ACR criteria for IIMs at a tertiary rheumatology clinic in Monterrey, Mexico, from 2015 to 2019. We interviewed patients, reviewed medical records, and performed a my

Case Report: Juvenile dermatomyositis complicated by acute myeloid leukemia: achievement of sustained remission through hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), a pediatric subtype of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy, is a relatively rare rheumatic and immune system disease among children. Although paraneoplastic dermatomyositis (DM) has been documented in adult malignancies, its association with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in pediatric populations remains exceptionally rare. We present a male patient diagnosed with JDM at age 6, characterized by Gottron's papules and muscle weakness. Despite receiving sequential immunosuppressive therapies and biological agents, the disease followed a relapsing-remitting course over 9

The effects of plyometric training on adolescent sports performance: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Plyometric training (PT) is a popular method of improving explosive power, speed, and agility in adolescent athletes. Nevertheless, earlier reviews have been mainly based on individual performance domains, individual sports or general youth groups. It is therefore not clear whether the effects of PT differ based on sex, type of sport, frequency of training or duration of intervention. This meta-analysis and systematic review investigated the impact of PT on jumping, sprinting, and agility performance in adolescents. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were searched from da

Occipital Extracranial Dermoid Cyst in a Neonate With Cardiofaciocutaneous Syndrome Type 4 (CFC4): A Case Report.

Dermoid cysts are congenital inclusion lesions that arise from ectodermal entrapment along embryonic fusion lines; occipital extracranial involvement is particularly uncommon. Cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome type 4 (CFC4), a RASopathy caused by pathogenic variants in MAP2K2, presents with characteristic dermatologic, craniofacial, and multisystem findings. We report an occipital extracranial dermoid cyst in a neonate with CFC4, proposing a possible developmental association between these two rare entities. A 16-day-old female infant, born preterm at 28 weeks, presented with multiple firm, skin-c

Complicated Catastrophic Calcium Gluconate Extravasation: Post-Surgical Graft Calcinosis Cutis.

Extravasation is a rare but serious complication of intravenous injections, particularly with irritant or vesicant drugs, which can lead to significant tissue damage. In this case report, we describe a 14-year-old boy who developed calcinosis cutis due to extravasation of calcium gluconate, resulting in extensive tissue necrosis. Although surgical debridement and grafting were performed, the patient subsequently experienced iatrogenic post-surgical graft calcinosis cutis, leading to severe hand disability. This case underscores the importance of prompt recognition and management of extravasati

Calcinosis Cutis Universalis: A Review of Therapeutic Strategies and Surgical Management.

Background/Objectives: Calcinosis cutis universalis is a rare and severe manifestation of dystrophic calcification, most associated with connective tissue diseases such as dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. It is characterized by widespread deposition of calcium salts throughout the soft tissues, leading to pain, recurrent infections, restricted mobility, and significant impairment in daily functioning and quality of life. Management remains challenging due to the absence of standardized treatment guidelines with risks including delayed wound healing and rec

Parallel course of calcinosis and cancer in a patient with anti-NXP2-positive dermatomyositis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: In patients with dermatomyositis (DM) and anti-nuclear matrix protein 2 autoantibodies, associations with both cancer and calcinosis are well established. However, the relationship between the progression of calcinosis and the development of cancer remains unknown. Herein, we describe a unique case that prompts hypotheses regarding shared immunologic mechanisms underlying these clinical complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 46-year-old woman diagnosed with biopsy-proven anti-nuclear matrix protein 2-positive DM manifesting as proximal muscle weakness, myalgias

Idiopathic multifocal calcinosis cutis presenting in a cat with vestibular syndrome: clinical, radiographic and histopathological findings.

CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old spayed female British Shorthair cat was presented with an acute onset of right-sided head tilt, circling and horizontal nystagmus. Neurological examination, CT and video-otoscopic evaluation confirmed a right-sided peripheral vestibular syndrome secondary to otitis media. The cat received cefixime (10 mg/kg PO q24h) and methylprednisolone (1 mg/kg PO q24h) for 2 weeks, resulting in marked improvement of vestibular signs by day 4. During the physical examination, multiple firm, non-painful subcutaneous nodules of varying sizes were palpated in different body regions,

[Calcinosis cutis in a hemodialysis patient with Von Hippel-Lindau disease].

We report the case of a 52-year-old man with Von Hippel-Lindau disease who had been receiving nocturnal home hemodialysis for ten months following bilateral nephrectomy for multifocal clear cell renal carcinoma. He presented with a firm, painless subcutaneous nodule on the right anterior thigh, featuring a central crater filled with chalky-white material. Skin biopsy revealed dermal calcium deposits surrounded by a fibrous and histiocytic reaction, consistent with dystrophic calcinosis cutis. Additional nodules were palpable on the left calf and right biceps. Bilateral femur X-rays were normal

Erdafitinib-Induced Flexural Calcinosis Cutis in a Pediatric Patient: A Drug-Specific Side-Effect?

Fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) inhibitors are effective in malignancies with FGFR pathway alterations but may disrupt calcium-phosphate metabolism, leading to dermatologic side effects. We report a case of calcinosis cutis presenting as painful flexural plaques in a 16-year-old patient treated with erdafitinib for high-grade glioma. The patient's age, unusual lesion distribution, and spontaneous resolution after drug discontinuation highlight a previously unreported association in pediatrics. Recognizing this potential adverse effect may help avoid unnecessary diagnostic or therapeut

Clinical characteristics and risk factors for calcinosis cutis in systemic sclerosis: insights from the EUSTAR database.

OBJECTIVES: Calcinosis Cutis (CaC) represents one of the most frequent and disabling non-lethal manifestations in SSc. Our objectives were to evaluate (1) associations of CaC with SSc clinical characteristics and (2) identify risk factors for CaC development. METHODS: EUSTAR database-registered SSc patients with available information on their CaC status were included. We compared baseline patient characteristics (with vs without CaC at baseline) and investigated predictors of CaC development at 5 and 10 years (in those without baseline CaC) with logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: A total
