BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a leading cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide. Rural populations and pig production systems in Argentina may be at increased risk of HEV exposure; however, epidemiological data from these settings remain scarce.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among residents of a rural community. Serum samples from 90 residents were tested for anti-HEV immunoglobulin G. Participants completed structured questionnaires and residential addresses were georeferenced to evaluate exposures and spatial distribution.
RESULTS: Rural residents reported greate

The role of human tetraparvoviruses (PARV4) in cases of acute illness is poorly characterized, and the contribution of animal-associated tetraparvoviruses to human disease is unknown. In this study, we applied metagenomic and viral-enrichment next-generation sequencing to plasma from patients with diagnostically unresolved acute illness in Georgia (non-A-C hepatitis) and Bangladesh (acute febrile illness), and two tetraparvovirus genomes were recovered. Specimen HEP004 from a Georgian patient with acute hepatitis contained a virus clustering within Tetraparvovirus ungulate4, a species associat

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disease with an unknown etiology. Several theories on its etiology have been proposed, including autoimmune mechanisms, oxidative stress, genetic factors, environmental factors, and lack of melanocyte growth factor. Recent studies have demonstrated a possible correlation between microbial infections and the development or consequences of vitiligo. This study aims to investigate the potential association between microbial infections and vitiligo, focusing on identifying any explainable correlations between these two. A systematic search was performed on al

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that may cause acute liver disease. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, high prevalence rates are still reported in Southeast Asia and Africa, where sanitation conditions are poor. Although seven genotypes are known, including three in humans, three in non-human primates (NHP), and one recently identified in alpacas, the diversity, ecology, and evolutionary history of HAV remain poorly understood. In a pilot study of virome molecular characterization of wild African apes by using oligonucleotide probes enrichment, HAV sequences

Wesselsbron virus (WSLV) is a mosquito-borne Orthoflavivirus of the yellow fever virus (YFV) serocomplex, widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. It is neglected, and its true impact is likely underestimated. WSLV causes abortion, congenital malformations, and neonatal mortality in sheep, the primary recognized vertebrate host, but infections have also been documented in goats, cattle, camels, wildlife, and humans. The virus is maintained in complex cycles predominantly involving Aedes mosquitoes and incompletely defined domestic and wild vertebrate hosts. Direct infection via the placen

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is ubiquitous, affecting over 90% of the global population, and while typically benign, it can rarely cause acute liver failure - a life-threatening complication that is frequently fatal. This review comprehensively reviews two overlapping clinical and pathogenetic patterns of EBV-associated hepatic failure - isolated severe EBV hepatitis and EBV-triggered hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) - which are best understood as ends of a clinical spectrum rather than discrete entities. In isolated EBV hepatitis, liver injury is driven by CD8-positive T cells a

Viral proteins are dynamic molecular machines that couple molecular-scale events to microbiological phenotypes, including host-cell tropism, entry efficiency, environmental persistence, strain-specific immune escape, and antiviral resistance. In this review, we critically evaluated how experimental, computational, and biochemical approaches define these links and support clinical translation. We organized the evidence around four key observables: Structure, dynamics, mechanics, and thermodynamics. We then assessed which conclusions remained robust across methods and viral families. BACKGROUND: Acute and recently acquired hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection clusters in men who have sex with men living with HIV and in people who inject drugs, where early cure benefits both the individual and transmission control. The best interferon-free dual direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimen and treatment duration, including short courses, remain undefined.
METHODS: MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched to 1 July 2026 for studies of interferon-free dual-DAA therapy in acute or recently acquired HCV reporting SVR12. Each study was appraise

The Amapa State, Brazil, in the Amazon region and bordering French Guiana, is a strategic sentinel location for infectious disease surveillance. Ecological pressures such as deforestation, artisanal gold mining, and high human mobility contribute to complex transmission dynamics of arboviruses, bacterial infections, and other pathogens. This study aims to characterize the etiologies of acute febrile illness (AFI) reported in Amapa State in 2018-2020, focusing on arbovirus circulation, bacterial contributions, and emerging pathogens. A retrospective analysis was carried out with 727 AFI cases.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is widespread globally, however the data on HCV is sparse in the anglophone Caribbean particularly among persons living with HIV. Acute HCV infection is frequently asymptomatic and in resource limited countries, there are numerous challenges with diagnosis and treatment. We present the case of a 45 year old man who has sex with men (MSM) living with HIV in Trinidad with sexually acquired HCV infection in whom there were elevated liver transaminases and low HCV RNA levels that signified a strong immune mediated response in an attempt to clear the virus, but thi

BACKGROUND: Acute hepatitis C virus outbreaks in California are identified by local health jurisdictions through the investigation of cases reported by laboratories and health care providers to the state's public health surveillance system. However, acute hepatitis C cases are widely underreported, limiting timely outbreak detection and early intervention. SaTScan (Space and Time Scan Statistics) has been proposed as a valuable tool to better detect disease clusters that may be missed by traditional surveillance, even when the disease is underreported, but it is not routinely used for acute he

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) is associated with high short- and long-term mortality. Prior nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA) treatment history, particularly treatment withdrawal and virological resistance, may contribute to ACLF development and influence prognosis after onset. However, the clinical impact of different NA treatment histories in patients with HBV-ACLF remains insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the associations of baseline HBV-DNA status and prior NA treatment history with mortality in patients with HBV-ACLF.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is one of the leading causes of acute and chronic hepatitis among humans across the globe and is linked to severe diseases in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women. Despite its substantial global burden, only one vaccine is licensed (in China and Pakistan), limiting its global accessibility. Furthermore, no globally approved mRNA vaccine against HEV is currently available, highlighting the need to develop strategies for alternative vaccines.
METHODS: In this study, the amino acid sequences of ORF2 capsid proteins representative of HEV genotypes 1

INTRODUCTION: Fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) causes fatal hepatitis in chickens and has a substantial impact on the poultry industry. The virus primarily targets the liver in chickens. Although viral load in the brain has been previously reported, the association of acute FAdV-4 infection with brain immune response remains poorly characterized. Therefore, this study focuses on immune alterations in the brain during acute FAdV-4 infection.
METHODS: Here, we investigated an increase in immune cell populations, along with the expression of barrier-related genes, to define the neuroimmune re

OBJECTIVES: Respiratory viruses are a global health burden. While influenza has been a large focus of surveillance, non-influenza viruses remain understudied in Canada, leaving gaps in understanding their seasonal patterns and epidemiology. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic further disrupted typical virus seasonality, highlighting the urgent need for expanded surveillance to track evolving trends.
METHODS: A multicenter retrospective analysis of molecular testing data for 15 respiratory viruses was conducted on tests performed over three consecutive respiratory virus seasons. Hospital-lev

The gut microbiome influences epithelial barrier integrity, metabolite availability, mucosal immune tone, and vaccine responsiveness, all of which are relevant to enterically transmitted viral infection. Norovirus and rotavirus primarily replicate in the intestinal mucosa and cause acute gastroenteritis, whereas poliovirus replicates in the gut and may disseminate systemically. Hepatitis A virus and hepatitis E virus are acquired through the intestine and shed fecally, but their dominant clinical manifestation is hepatitis. This review synthesizes evidence linking the bacteriome, phageome/viro

We report a woman in her 50s who presented with jaundice and severe hepatocellular injury, concurrently found to have newly diagnosed advanced HIV infection (CD4 count 17, viral load 195 600 copies/mL). In this context, infectious hepatitis or opportunistic infections were the important initial consideration, but viral serology, imaging and liver biopsy excluded opportunistic and viral causes. Markedly raised immunoglobulin G, positive anti-nuclear and smooth muscle antibodies, typical histology and rapid response to corticosteroids confirmed acute autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). She improved on p

BACKGROUND: Viral hepatitis, particularly Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV), represents a significant health complication in immunocompromised patients, including children diagnosed with acute leukaemia. These patients are at increased risk of getting infections due to frequent blood transfusions, invasive procedures, and immunosuppressive therapy. The study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of hepatitis B and C virus infection among children with acute leukaemia treated in the pediatric haematology unit at Ibn Al-Ather Teaching Hospital in Mosul city, compare them with a control group an
