Pedicle screw fixation is a critical technique for stabilizing lumbar fractures in canines, yet the biomechanical implications of insertion angles remain underexplored. This study aims to identify optimal screw trajectories by analyzing stress distribution and deformation patterns in beagle lumbar segments (L6-L7) using finite element analysis (FEA). A 3D finite element model was reconstructed from CT scans of a healthy beagle, incorporating cortical/cancellous bone, intervertebral disks, and cartilage. Pedicle screws (2.4 mm diameter, 22 mm length) were virtually implanted at angles ranging f

Spinal fusion with metallic implants is a widely used surgical approach to manage various spinal pathologies including instability and degenerative diseases. Although spinal instrumentations facilitate successful bone fusion by providing immediate rigid support and stability, their removal may be necessary because of pain, mechanical failure, or infection. However, implant removal, particularly in patients with low bone density, may lead to fractures of the fused vertebral bodies owing to stress-shielding effects. This case report describes a 70-year-old woman with a history of spinal fusion s

BACKGROUND: Limited research exists on young patients with femoral head subchondral stress fractures (SSF), especially regarding how hip anatomy may contribute to this condition. Few studies have explored the potential correlation between its pathogenesis and developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). We aimed to determine hip morphology in patients with femoral head SSF and analyze the distribution of various parameters reflecting hip coverage and stability.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiographic data of all patients with femoral head SSF who met the inclusion criteria between January 2019 and N

BACKGROUND: Combined anterior-posterior fixation offers significant advantages in reconstructing spinal stability, correcting kyphotic deformities, and achieving neural decompression. However, osteoporosis increases the surgical risks associated with this technique, and relevant studies remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the biomechanical characteristics of posterior short-segment fixation combined with expandable polyetheretherketone (PEEK) vertebral body replacement (VBR) in osteoporotic spines, with the goal of optimizing surgical strategies and material selection.
METHODS: Finite

AETIOPATHOGENESIS: Sacral fractures represent an often overlooked interface between spinal and pelvic ring injuries. They typically occur in high-energy trauma or in older patients with osteoporosis.
DIAGNOSTICS: Due to their complex anatomy and deep location, they are difficult to detect using conventional radiography; thus, computed tomography (CT) is considered the diagnostic gold standard and allows precise fracture analysis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is particularly valuable for insufficiency or stress-related fractures to detect early bone marrow edema. Biomechanically, the sacru

This study aimed to quantify how repetitive tensile loading alters the mechanical and structural properties of the annulus fibrosus (AF). Mechanical changes were evaluated through a three-step protocol involving pre-damage characterization of dynamic and viscoelastic properties, damage induction using predetermined loading cycles (n=400, 1600, 6400, 12,800) to a specified strain magnitude (11 %, 20 %, 28 %, 44 %), and post-damage characterization of the same properties. Structural changes were assessed by subjecting tissue to damage cycles and staining with hematoxylin and eosin or fluorescing

A main concern of clinicians for patients with an osteolytic vertebra is assessment of a fracture, however a higher concern exists for occurrence of a burst fracture because of its more complexity and less chance of healing. This paper aimed to assess a burst fracture risk using a well-known technique in fracture mechanics as virtual crack closure technique for a case study, involved with multiple myeloma in a lumbar vertebra. The reliability of the model to simulate the ultimate strength for a vertebral segment was exhibited by simulation of anin-vitrocompression test. Then the progression of

Background/Objectives: The os supranaviculare (OSSN), also known as os talonaviculare dorsale, astragalo-scaphoid ossicle, or Pirie's bone, is a small extra bone that was first described in 1921 by A.H. Pirie and is located at the top front part of the navicular bone or talonavicular joint. The knowledge regarding the epidemiology of the OSSN is scarcely established, as its prevalence remains unknown and varies significantly among multiple studies. This meta-analysis aims to clarify and systematically summarize all available data on the characteristics and prevalence of the OSSN. Methods: Four

BACKGROUND: Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) is associated with impaired performance and compromised bone health in elite athletes. While reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risk for bone stress injuries are well documented, the underlying metabolic mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates the bone metabolism in athletes with REDs and its impact on BMD and bone microstructure.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed data from 82 elite athletes (30.5% females, age 23.4 ± 7.6 years) who presented to our outpatient clinic. The diagnosis of REDs was made ac

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is prevalent among both the general population and physically active adolescents. A substantial proportion of cases can be attributed to lumbar bone stress injuries (LBSI), particularly among adolescents engaged in competitive sports, likely due to high physical demands. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of LBSI in adolescent athletes, with a focus on sport- and location-specific as well as age- or sex-related differences.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using the PubMed and Web of Science databases to identify studies reporting on L

Background and Clinical Significance: Scapular stress fractures are exceptionally rare in athletes and are notoriously difficult to diagnose due to their subtle presentation and poor sensitivity on initial radiographs. This case report describes the diagnostic challenge of a scapular body stress fracture in an elite boxer who initially presented with wrist pain. Case Presentation: A 19-year-old right-hand-dominant female elite boxer presented with a three-month history of bilateral wrist pain. Initial examination and MRI were consistent with a triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injury. D

Spinal interbody fusion devices (IBFD) are commonly used to treat various spinal pathologies. Additive Manufacturing (AM) has been used to incorporate lattice structures into IBFD designs, intended to facilitate bony in-growth and reduce stress shielding. However, there is concern with IBFDs failing intra-operatively based on the medical device adverse event reporting to FDA, in which such failures were reported for both AM titanium as well as traditional PEEK IBFDs. This study aims to develop a bench test to simulate intra-operative impact loading and then use different AM lattice parameters

Bone tissue failure consists of damage, defined as a loss of material integrity or stiffness, and fracture, describing the separation of the material. Bone tissue damage plays a role in regulating bone turnover. Bone fracture can lead to loss of mobility, pain and the need for stabilization procedures. Micro finite element (μFE) modeling has been used as a non-destructive tool to investigate stiffness, strength, post-yield behavior, damage and fracture in bone. Previous studies have utilized elastic-plastic mechanics and continuum damage mechanics (with or without element deletion) to model da
