Off-flavors in fish: origins, detection, and mitigation strategies.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the short-term effects of Achilles tendon ruptures on medial gastrocnemius. We hypothesized that the fascicles of the medial gastrocnemius muscle of the injured Achilles tendon would be shorter and more pennate immediately following the injury and would persist throughout 4 weeks post-injury. B-mode longitudinal ultrasound images of the medial gastrocnemius were acquired in 10 adults who suffered acute Achilles tendon ruptures and were treated non-operatively. Ultrasound images were acquired during the initial clinical visit following injury as wel

Tendinopathy alters the time course of free achilles tendon morphological recovery following eccentric exercise.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate and short-term (0-3 h) effects of a single bout of eccentric plantarflexion exercise on three-dimensional (3D) Achilles tendon (AT) morphology in healthy and tendinopathic tendons. The eccentric exercise protocol consisted of six sets of 15 unilateral heel drops performed on a step. Freehand 3D ultrasound scans of the AT were acquired immediately before exercise and at 30-minute intervals over a 3-hour post-exercise recovery period to quantify tendon volume, length, and cross-sectional area (CSA). An exponential function characterized

Increased Achilles tendon force required to achieve heel-lift in cadaveric model of midfoot instability - A cadaveric study.

The progressive ligament instability associated with flatfoot deformity may result in altered foot biomechanics and represent a risk factor for the development of Achilles Tendinopathy (AT). The aim of this study was to determine whether an increased tendo-Achilles (TA) force was required to generate a set heel lift in a cadaveric flatfoot model. Thirteen fresh (previously frozen) cadavers, with no previous foot pathology and sectioned from the knee were mounted on a testing frame. The frame maintained a dorsiflexed ankle position, to simulate the terminal stance phase of gait, and allowed a c

The effects of pain science education plus exercise on pain and function in chronic Achilles tendinopathy: a blinded, placebo-controlled, explanatory, randomized trial.

Exercise is the standard of care for Achilles tendinopathy (AT), but 20% to 50% of patients continue to have pain following rehabilitation. The addition of pain science education (PSE) to an exercise program may enhance clinical outcomes, yet this has not been examined in patients with AT. Furthermore, little is known about how rehabilitation for AT alters the fear of movement and central nervous system nociceptive processing. Participants with chronic AT (N = 66) were randomized to receive education about AT either from a biopsychosocial (PSE) or from a biomedical (pathoanatomical education [

Imaging of enthesitis by an LED-based photoacoustic system.

SIGNIFICANCE: One key pathological characteristic of seronegative spondyloarthropathy (SpA) is inflammation at the insertion of tendons and ligaments into the bone (enthesitis). AIM: We explore the potential of the emerging photoacoustic (PA) imaging in diagnosis of SpA and review its feasibility in detecting SpA-associated Achilles tendon enthesitis. APPROACH: A light-emitting diode (LED)-based PA and ultrasound combined system was employed. The PA images, both along the long and the short axes of each Achilles tendon insertion region, were acquired at 850-nm wavelength, which is sensitive

In vitro Antagonistic Activity of Endophytic Fungi Isolated from Shirazi Thyme (Zataria multiflora Boiss.) against Monosporascus cannonballus.

Transthoracic and transesophageal examinations should be considered as mutually complementary. Transesophageal echocardiography is performed in cases of a justified need to visualize structures that are poorly visible or invisible on transthoracic echocardiogram. Primary indications for transesophageal echocardiography include an assessment of cardiac source of embolism, suspected endocarditis, suspected prosthetic valve dysfunction, an assessment of thoracic aorta and other vessels, an assessment prior to valvular repairs and closures of septal defects, intraoperative monitoring of cardiac or

A pilot study of short T2* measurements with ultrashort echo time imaging at 0.35 T.

PURPOSE: Ultrashort echo time (UTE) sequences play a key role in imaging and quantifying short T2 species. However, almost all of the relevant studies was conducted at relatively high fields. The purpose of this work was to further explore the feasibility of UTE imaging and T2* measurement for short T2 species at low fields. METHODS: A 2D UTE sequence with an echo time (TE) of 0.37 ms was developed on a 0.35 T permanent magnet scanner. This sequence acquires multiecho images to fit the monoexponential signal decay model for quantitative T2* calculations. In the phantom experiments, MnCl2 solu

Three-dimensional ultrashort echo time cones T1ρ (3D UTE-cones-T1ρ ) imaging.

We report a novel three-dimensional (3D) ultrashort echo time (UTE) sequence employing Cones trajectory and T1ρ preparation (UTE-Cones-T1ρ ) for quantitative T1ρ assessment of short T2 tissues in the musculoskeletal system. A basic 3D UTE-Cones sequence was combined with a spin-locking preparation pulse for T1ρ contrast. A relatively short TR was used to decrease the scan time, which required T1 measurement and compensation using 3D UTE-Cones data acquisitions with variable TRs. Another strategy to reduce the total scan time was to acquire multiple Cones spokes (Nsp ) after each T1ρ preparatio

Immortalized Mouse Achilles Tenocytes Demonstrate Long-Term Proliferative Capacity While Retaining Tenogenic Properties.

Investigating the cellular processes underlying tendon healing can allow researchers to improve long-term outcomes after injury. However, conducting meaningful studies to uncover the injury healing mechanism at cellular and molecular levels remains challenging. This is due to the inherent difficulty in isolating, culturing, and expanding sufficient primary tenocytes, due to their limited proliferative capacity and short lifespan. In this study, we sought to establish a novel line of immortalized mouse Achilles tenocytes (iMATs) with primary tenocyte properties, but increased proliferative capa

Doublet potentiation in the triceps surae is limited by series compliance and dynamic fascicle behavior.

Activation of skeletal muscle twice in quick succession results in nonlinear force summation (i.e., doublet potentiation). The force contributed by a second activation is typically of augmented amplitude, longer in duration, and generated at a greater rate. The purpose of this study was to examine force summation in a muscle attached to a compliant tendon, where considerable internal shortening occurs during a fixed-end contraction. The triceps surae of 21 (Experiment 1) and 9 (Experiment 2) young adults were maximally activated with doublet stimulation of different interstimulus intervals (IS

Quantitative MRI measurements of the Achilles tendon in spondyloarthritis using ultrashort echo times.

OBJECTIVES: Tendon involvement is common in spondyloarthritis. The MRI signal from the Achilles tendon has been used to quantify mechanical tendinopathy; however, conventional MRI is limited by the short T(2) of normal tendon. Short and ultrashort echo time (UTE) MRI have the potential to better measure signal intensity reflecting changes in T(2) or gadolinium enhancement. Furthermore, UTE images could be used for normalisation to reduce variability. The aim of this work was to investigate such techniques in patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA). METHODS: The Achilles tendons of 14 healthy vo

Long-term results after gastrocnemius-soleus intramuscular aponeurotic recession as a part of multilevel surgery in spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Equinus of the foot at the ankle is one of the most common deformities in patients with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, leading to gait disturbances and secondary deformities. During single-event multilevel surgery, equinus is commonly corrected by calf muscle lengthening, such as gastrocnemius-soleus intramuscular aponeurotic recession. Various studies have described satisfactory short-term results after gastrocnemius-soleus intramuscular aponeurotic recession. However, there is no evidence for maintenance of equinus correction because of the small and heterogeneous case series a

Quantitative magnetization transfer ultrashort echo time imaging of the Achilles tendon.

Ultrashort echo time imaging allows the short T(2) Achilles tendon to be directly visualized with MRI. Radiofrequency saturation 1 kHz or less off-resonance has been used previously to improve image contrast. In this study, magnetization transfer was investigated in the Achilles tendon of eight normal volunteers and one patient with psoriatic arthritis. 2D Ultrashort echo time images were acquired using saturation pulses 2-100 kHz off-resonance at 4 pulse powers. On-resonance saturation recovery images were also obtained to estimate T(1). The results were fitted to a two compartment quantitati
