Improving childhood vaccination among minority populations in middle- and high-income countries: a realist review of health system interventions.

BACKGROUND: Most minority populations in Europe generally exhibit lower childhood vaccine uptake compared with the general population. Improving uptake in these populations requires contextually tailored interventions. We conducted a realist review to identify interventions effective at improving measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake among underserved communities. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane and ProQuest for English language publications from 2005 to 2022. Following title and abstract screening, full texts were assessed for r

Local wastewater monitoring as a complementary tool in a mumps outbreak investigation in the Netherlands: A proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: A recent outbreak of mumps showed a concerningly low number of classical disease notifications, prompting evaluation of the efficacy of local wastewater monitoring. METHODS: Suspected mumps cases were recorded by local General Practitioner practices (n = 13) for 20 weeks, and laboratory-reported notifications were collected. Local wastewater monitoring using passive samplers was deployed downstream of a confirmed case and their school, and in wastewater pumping stations serving the involved and neighbouring towns. Wastewater samples were analysed using reverse transcription polyme

Molecular characterization of mumps viruses from the 2022-2023 outbreak reveals circulation of multiple genotypes in Uganda.

Mumps is a highly contagious viral disease caused by the mumps virus (MuV), a member of the genus Orthorubulavirus in the family Paramyxoviridae. Although effective vaccines exist, mumps vaccination is not yet part of Uganda's routine immunization program. In 2022 and 2023, Uganda experienced a notable outbreak of mumps, underscoring the need for molecular characterization of the circulating virus strains. This study aimed to identify and genetically characterize the mumps virus strains responsible for the outbreak. Buccal or oropharyngeal swabs were collected from clinically confirmed cases f

Measles Outbreak Associated with an Infectious Traveler - Colorado, May-June 2025.

Measles is a highly contagious vaccine-preventable viral disease. Successful vaccination programs resulted in limited measles transmission in the United States in 2000, but U.S. cases have been increasing since early 2025. On May 20, 2025, CDC notified the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment of a measles case in an unvaccinated, non-Colorado resident who had arrived in Denver, Colorado, on an international flight and traveled through the Denver International Airport while infectious. The patient acquired measles in the United States before travelling internationally. Nine seco

Resurgence of measles in the United States: Examining the outbreak, vaccine hesitancy, and future directions.

The United States is experiencing a resurgence of measles, a highly contagious disease previously declared eliminated in 2000. This article examines the current trends of this resurgence, focusing on the increasing number of cases and outbreaks, the factors contributing to low vaccination rates, and the critical role of vaccine hesitancy. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as of May 15, 2025, are presented, highlighting the significant increase in measles activity and the concentration of cases within outbreaks. The analysis explores the epidemiological characterist

Seroprevalence of mumps and rubella antibodies among Indian children: evidence of a mumps immunity gap.

Mumps and rubella are highly contagious, vaccine-preventable diseases; however, India's National Immunization Program prioritizes rubella while excluding mumps. In this cross-sectional study, we measured mumps- and rubella-specific IgG seroprevalence in 508 children (49.6% female) from Kerala and evaluated demographic associations. Seropositivity was 78.5% (95% CI, 74.8-81.9%) for mumps and 99.4% (95% CI, 98.3-99.8%) for rubella. Mumps IgG titers were significantly higher in females (p = 0.0061) and increased with vaccine doses (p < 0.001), whereas rubella IgG titers showed no such association

Comparative analysis of different treatment modalities for management of cutaneous warts: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous warts are exophytic, benign proliferative lesions caused by human papillomavirus infection of basal keratinocytes. Many intralesional immunomodulatory agents are used by dermatologists these days including Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine, measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, purified protein derivative (PPD), Candida extract, vitamin D3, interferon alpha, zinc sulphate, and hepatitis B vaccine. Intralesional acyclovir is considered a novel intralesional therapy for warts as it directly destroys the viral cells. The objectives of this study are to provide the latest comparison

Delayed neurological events after mumps vaccination: implications for surveillance and clinical recognition.

We report a case of febrile status epilepticus with aseptic meningitis occurring 23 days after mumps vaccination (Hoshino strain) in a previously healthy male infant. The vaccine strain was identified in cerebrospinal fluid by reverse transcription-PCR and sequencing. This case may illustrate potential blind spots in current vaccine safety surveillance, which often rely on short monitoring windows and passive reporting. It suggests that consideration of longer surveillance periods, improved clinician awareness of delayed neurological complications and greater diagnostic vigilance may be warran

Anaesthetic mumps associated with laryngeal mask airway use - a case report.

Acute postoperative sialadenitis (or the anaesthetic mumps) is a very rare complication of anaesthesia. It is not limited to general anaesthesia only. It is usually benign but can lead to complete airway obstruction. Its mechanism of action is likely multifactorial, but primarily due to obstruction of the salivary glands. In this case we present a 67-year-old female who has experienced this rare complication twice. After examining previous anaesthetics for commonality, we were able to test the hypothesis that in this particular case the anaesthetic mumps were in fact due to laryngeal mask airw

Iodine-Induced Sialadenitis Requiring Intubation After Intracranial Venous Sinus Stenting: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Iodine-induced sialadenitis (iodine-induced mumps), first described in 1956, has been reported in more than 100 cases in the medical literature. It involves acute swelling of the salivary glands, resembling the effects of the mumps virus, after administration of iodine-containing compounds. It is most commonly observed after iodinated contrast administration, although the exact pathophysiology remains unclear. CASE REPORT A 37-year-old woman underwent a cervical-cerebral angiogram, followed by venous sinus stenting 1 week later for idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Approximately

A comparative study of the therapeutic efficacy of various intralesional immunotherapies in extragenital cutaneous warts.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous warts are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). Most of the current removal modalities are ablative which is associated with recurrence and scarring at the site. Immunotherapy can overcome these limitations, and also distant warts can be treated simultaneously. AIMS: To compare the efficacy of three immunotherapeutic agents, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccine, and vitamin D3 injection in the treatment of multiple extragenital cutaneous warts and to assess the safety and recurrence rates of different intralesional immunotherapeuti

Intention to vaccinate children against measles: findings from a national survey in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The United States is currently experiencing the largest surge of measles cases since 2000, with over 2855 cases reported across the country since January 2025. Though the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is recognized as the most effective protection against measles, rates of MMR coverage among children under the age of five have declined in several US states. Across the US, attitudes towards measles and intention to vaccinate are not well understood. METHODS: We conducted a nationally representative survey assessing measles knowledge, attitudes, and intention to vaccinat
