A sound approach: scoping review of adult lower urinary tract foreign body recognition and management.

INTRODUCTION: Insertion of foreign bodies into the lower urinary tract by adults is an uncommon but clinically important presentation encountered by urologists and emergency providers across a range of motivations. Retained or migrated objects can lead to serious complications including infection, calculus formation, and urethral trauma, often necessitating careful and complex management. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews. Because only published, de-identified case material was used, institutional review board approval was not required.

No Cystometrogram Among Veterans With Spinal Cord Injury Results in Adverse Urinary System Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: A prior study of a large cohort of veterans with supra-sacral spinal cord injury or disorder (SCI/D) showed, as seen in other cohorts, substantial variation in application of bladder care processes and, specifically in the proportion of patients undergoing cystometrography (CMG). The next step in a systematic evaluation such as this is to assess the association CMG on outcomes related to the urinary system. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association of CMG being performed with changes in bladder management, urinary tract infections, urinary stones, renal deterioration, and dialysis car

Bladder Stone Formation Due to Suture Migration After Burch Colposuspension: A Case Report.

Burch colposuspension is a well-established, mesh-free surgical technique for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Although lower urinary tract injuries may occur during the procedure, complications related to suture migration into the bladder are rare and may present years after surgery. We report a case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with a one-year history of progressive dysuria, suprapubic pain, and dyspareunia. She had undergone laparoscopic Burch colposuspension eight years earlier. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed bladder stones, and urethrocystoscopy demo

Bladder Stone Formation on Migrated Hem-o-Lok Clips at the Vesicourethral Anastomosis After Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy: A Case Report.

Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a well-established surgical treatment for localized prostate cancer, offering excellent oncologic outcomes with reduced perioperative morbidity compared to open surgery. Hem-o-Lok® clips are routinely used during RARP to achieve hemostasis and facilitate precise dissection of the prostatic pedicles. Although generally safe, migration of these non-absorbable clips to the vesicourethral anastomosis represents an uncommon but clinically relevant late complication. Once exposed to urine, migrated clips may serve as a nidus for encrustation and subsequ

Time-Restricted Feeding With High-Fat Diet Slows Weight Gain and Reduces Renal Calcium Oxalate Crystal Formation Without Reducing Energy Intake.

Renal calcium oxalate stones are closely linked to lipid metabolism disorders. A long-term high-fat diet (HFD) can lead to obesity and other metabolic disorders, which significantly contribute to stone formation. Recent studies indicate that time-restricted feeding (TRF) plays a crucial role in improving metabolic homeostasis and preventing metabolic diseases. However, its impact on kidney stone formation has yet to be investigated. We examined differences in calcium oxalate crystal formation in mouse kidneys using glyoxylic acid (Gly) modeling in HFD mouse models subjected to either ad libitu

A radiological evaluation of crossed-fused ectopic kidney in adult female: Case report and comprehensive review of literature.

Crossed renal ectopia with fusion is a rare congenital kidney anomaly where the kidneys are fused and cross each other. Patients are asymptomatic while some may experience lower abdominal pain, hematuria, fever, urinary tract infection, hypertension, renal failure, and a palpable abdominal mass. It is often discovered incidentally during evaluations for related conditions like renal stones, pyelonephritis, vesico-ureteric reflux, cysts, or malignancy, with renal cell carcinoma being the most common. Diagnosis of crossed-fused renal ectopia can be done through abdominal ultrasonography, retrogr

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and kidney disease: Genetic associations and computational prioritization of candidate toxicogenomic pathways.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental pollutants with bioaccumulation potential, but their associations with kidney diseases remain incompletely understood. This study integrated Mendelian randomization and computational toxicology to examine associations between genetically predicted circulating PFAS levels and kidney disease outcomes and to prioritize candidate toxicogenomic pathway themes. Genetically predicted higher PFOA levels were inversely associated with IgA nephropathy (OR = 0.21, P = 0.004), but positively associated with hypertensive nephropathy (O

When long pulse is not enough: inferior dusting efficiency of pulsed thulium:YAG compared with Ho:YAG and thulium fiber laser in a standardized in vitro renal model.

Pulsed thulium: YAG (p-Tm: YAG) and thulium fiber laser (TFL) differ in pulse architecture despite similar wavelengths. We asked whether long-pulse p-Tm: YAG achieves ablation efficiency and thermal behaviour comparable to holmium: YAG (Ho: YAG) and TFL under standardized low-power dusting settings. Fifty-four BegoStone phantoms were treated in an in vitro renal collecting system model, 18 per platform, at 0.8 J and 25 Hz through a 7.5 Fr single-use flexible ureteroscope with gravity irrigation and no access sheath. Pulse duration was not standardized: Ho: YAG and p-Tm: YAG were long-pulse, TF

Computed tomography-based prediction of ureteroscopic failure in impacted ureteral stones: A focus on stone volume and ureteral anatomy.

INTRODUCTION: Impacted ureteral stones are associated with lower ureteroscopic success and increased procedural complexity. Although ureteroscopy is the standard treatment, reliable preoperative predictors of failure are limited, and decision-making often depends on intraoperative findings. This study evaluated the association between preoperative CT-based stone and ureteral anatomical parameters and ureteroscopic failure among patients with endoscopically confirmed impacted ureteral calculi. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 123 patients with impacted ureteral calculi who underwent

[A Case of Urethral Calculi Treated by Transurethral Surgery Due to Mesh Exposure in the Urethra Following a Tension-Free Vaginal Tape Procedure].

A 66-year-old female patient visited another hospital complaining of frequent urination. Computed tomography scan revealed a 3 cm urethral stone, and she was referred to our hospital for surgery. The patient had a history of tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) surgery for stress urinary incontinence approximately 15 years ago. When transurethral lithotripsy was initiated, the lower end of the stone was found near the external urethral meatus, and an attempt to push it into the bladder was unsuccessful. When fragmentation of the stone was performed using a Ho-YAG laser, exposure of the mesh, presum

Calcified Foley Catheter and Vesicovaginal Fistula: A Case Report.

Calcification of indwelling urinary catheters is a known complication of prolonged urinary catheterization. It is caused by the formation of a bacterial biofilm, which promotes the accumulation of calcium deposits around the balloon. These deposits can lead to recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and, more rarely, bladder wall damage that can progress in the long term to a vesicovaginal fistula. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman living in a rural area who presented with persistent vaginal urinary incontinence. The patient reported having a urinary catheter that had been

The rigid ureteroscope-guided Seldinger technique: a novel and effective method of Foley catheter deployment in patients with challenging transurethral access.

Transurethral Foley catheterization is the preferred method of bladder drainage in acute urinary retention. Various anatomical factors can make urethral access challenging, making perurethral catheterization impossible on occasions. In these instances, suprapubic catheterization or cystoscopic catheter deployment is often required. We describe an exceptionally difficult case in which transurethral catheterization remained unsuccessful despite cystoscopic visualization and establishing guidewire access. A Seldinger-like approach was used to safely deploy a Foley catheter over a semirigid ureter
