A sound approach: scoping review of adult lower urinary tract foreign body recognition and management.

INTRODUCTION: Insertion of foreign bodies into the lower urinary tract by adults is an uncommon but clinically important presentation encountered by urologists and emergency providers across a range of motivations. Retained or migrated objects can lead to serious complications including infection, calculus formation, and urethral trauma, often necessitating careful and complex management. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews. Because only published, de-identified case material was used, institutional review board approval was not required.

In vivo radiographic characteristics associated with the mineral composition of calcium oxalate and struvite lower urinary tract uroliths in cats.

BACKGROUND: Radiography is widely used to diagnose lower urinary tract (LUT) urolithiasis in cats. Non-invasive identification of urolith mineral composition (UMC) is critical for therapy selection but remains challenging, as most data derive from dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To describe in vivo radiographic features of feline calcium oxalate and struvite LUT uroliths and identify distinguishing characteristics. ANIMALS: Sixty-nine cats with LUT uroliths containing ≥70% of calcium oxalate (n = 45) or struvite (n = 24). METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study. Radiographs were evaluated

[A Case of Urethral Calculi Treated by Transurethral Surgery Due to Mesh Exposure in the Urethra Following a Tension-Free Vaginal Tape Procedure].

A 66-year-old female patient visited another hospital complaining of frequent urination. Computed tomography scan revealed a 3 cm urethral stone, and she was referred to our hospital for surgery. The patient had a history of tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) surgery for stress urinary incontinence approximately 15 years ago. When transurethral lithotripsy was initiated, the lower end of the stone was found near the external urethral meatus, and an attempt to push it into the bladder was unsuccessful. When fragmentation of the stone was performed using a Ho-YAG laser, exposure of the mesh, presum

Calcified Foley Catheter and Vesicovaginal Fistula: A Case Report.

Calcification of indwelling urinary catheters is a known complication of prolonged urinary catheterization. It is caused by the formation of a bacterial biofilm, which promotes the accumulation of calcium deposits around the balloon. These deposits can lead to recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and, more rarely, bladder wall damage that can progress in the long term to a vesicovaginal fistula. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman living in a rural area who presented with persistent vaginal urinary incontinence. The patient reported having a urinary catheter that had been

The rigid ureteroscope-guided Seldinger technique: a novel and effective method of Foley catheter deployment in patients with challenging transurethral access.

Transurethral Foley catheterization is the preferred method of bladder drainage in acute urinary retention. Various anatomical factors can make urethral access challenging, making perurethral catheterization impossible on occasions. In these instances, suprapubic catheterization or cystoscopic catheter deployment is often required. We describe an exceptionally difficult case in which transurethral catheterization remained unsuccessful despite cystoscopic visualization and establishing guidewire access. A Seldinger-like approach was used to safely deploy a Foley catheter over a semirigid ureter

Congenital bulbourethral diverticulum with huge stones: a case report.

Male congenital urethral diverticulum with huge stones is an extremely rare benign disease. The patient was a 67-year-old male with a huge stone (4.5cm × 4.3cm × 4.1cm) in his bulbourethral diverticulum. The stones in the bulbourethral diverticulum have different treatment methods due to the different size of the stones. Since the number of such cases is very small, there is no clear standard treatment plan for the treatment of giant bulbourethral diverticular calculi (stone diameter greater than 4.0 cm). The treatment plan we give is transperineal incision of urethral diverticular incision, u

Nephroscopic management of partial bladder perforation by an intrauterine device with extravesical main body: a case report and treatment-oriented classification.

The intrauterine device (IUD) is an important and highly effective means of contraception. Migration of the IUD, post implantation, out of the uterus is an infrequent complication, and an IUD partially perforating the bladder is even more infrequently reported. The authors report a 44-year-old woman who had a copper-M IUD inserted into her uterus 16 years ago. Six months later an unexpected pregnancy occurred and an elective suction abortion was performed without ultrasound check before or after surgery. A copper-T IUD was inserted immediately after completion of the abortion but she was subse

Challenges for the effectiveness of infectious disease interventions during global change.

BACKGROUND: Sequential treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) that includes tumour necrosis factor-α antagonists (anti-TNF agents) has been applied in most of the Western countries. Existing cost-effectiveness (CE) models almost exclusively presented the incremental CE of anti-TNF agents using a closed cohort while budget impact studies are mainly lacking. Notwithstanding, information on impact on total population health and societal budget as well as on actual incremental CE for a given decision time span are important for decision makers. This study aimed at quantifying, for different deci

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Treatment and prognosis of pelvic-related urethral injuries in children: a 20-year single-center study and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Management of pelvic fracture-related urethral injury (PFUI) in children remains debated due to various complications. Patients typically receive either primary realignment (PR) or suprapubic cystostomy with delayed urethroplasty (SCDU), but optimal outcomes are unclear. This study evaluates these two surgical techniques by reviewing 20 years of case data and existing literature. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients treated for PFUI from 2004 to 2023, with a median follow-up of 2 years (1-15 years). Additionally, we performed a meta-analysis of relevant literature, search

Cystoscopy-assisted urolith retrieval via a perineal urethrostomy stoma in male cats.

ObjectivesWe sought to characterize cystoscopy-assisted urolith retrieval via a perineal urethrostomy stoma (CUPU) initially in a cadaveric model and then in clinical cases. We hypothesized that a CUPU would provide a reasonable alternative to the traditional approach of performing a cystotomy after perineal urethrostomy in male cats with complex or recurrent urolithiasis-associated urethral obstruction (UO).MethodsA perineal urethrostomy (PU) was performed in 20 male cat cadavers. A randomly assigned number of synthetic calculi (SynC) was placed retrograde into the urinary bladder, and an end

A novel approach for urethral catheterization in dromedary camels: a preclinical study.

BACKGROUND: Urethral obstruction due to urolithiasis is an uncommon problem reported in dromedary camels. Urethral catheterization is recommended as an emergency preliminary alternative to palliative urethrostomy to preserve valuable animals for breeding purposes. This procedure is not possible in camels due to the narrow diameter of the tortuous urethra, presence of sigmoid flexure and urethral recess and unavailability of specific full-length catheter. OBJECTIVE: To assess the normograde catheterization of the camel urethra through cystotomy incision by using 6-Fr, 70 cm, PVC straight-tip u

A Rare Case of a Giant Prostatic Urethral Stone and Its Management.

Prostate calculi, or prostatic stones, are typically small, greyish-brown, ultrasound-dense formations composed mainly of carbonated calcium phosphate apatite. We present a 65-year-old male with severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), including weak urinary stream, difficulty urinating, and acute retention, who was found to have a 4 cm prostate stone. Imaging confirmed obstruction of the prostatic urethra. Surgical intervention with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and Holmium laser lithotripsy successfully removed the stone and relieved symptoms. This case emphasizes the nee

Transurethral Cystolithotripsy vs Percutaneous Cystolithotomy for Bladder Stones in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Comparing Clinical Outcomes and Complications.

Background: The minimally invasive treatment of bladder stones (BS) in children has been demonstrated to be safe and effective by both transurethral cystolithotripsy (TUCL) and percutaneous cystolithotomy (PCCL). The surgical outcomes and potential complications associated with these two treatments remain uncertain. We conducted a meta-analysis to compare TUCL and PCCL in pediatric BS with a focus on long-term stone-free rates (SFR), postoperative complications, and cost-effectiveness. Bladder Stone Incarceration in Posterior Urethral Valve Leading to Urinary Retention: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior urethral valve (PUV) and vesical calculus are individually among the most common causes of obstructive lower urinary symptoms in children. Intermittent urinary retention can be caused by a combination of PUVs and bladder stones. There are very few reports of an association between PUVs and bladder calculus. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of intermittent urinary retention resulting from a stone obstructing the PUV. The patient experienced intermittent urinary retention for over a month. A computed tomography scan revealed a bladder stone in the posterior urethra.
