Acute esotropia concurrent with adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis.

Acute acquired comitant esotropia is a rare manifestation of strabismus that has been used to describe an acute late-onset of esotropia with diplopia in a previously orthotropic individual. It often occurs in older children and adults and has been associated with multiple etiologies. Despite the multiple reports conducted its cause is still controversial. We describe a young patient with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis with an acute comitant esotropia. He had no underlying diseases and regained stereo acuity after surgical alignment of both eyes.

An Update on Viral Conjunctivitis Treatment Strategies: A Narrative Literature Review.

Viral conjunctivitis is a highly contagious ocular condition that significantly impacts patient quality of life and healthcare resources. Despite its self-limiting nature, the condition remains a significant public health concern due to its high transmissibility, prolonged symptoms, and potential complications such as subepithelial infiltrates (SEIs). This review aimed to synthesize and evaluate current management strategies for adenoviral conjunctivitis and provide an evidence-based treatment framework. A systematic literature search of PubMed and the Cochrane Library was conducted, identifyi

Virucidal Effects of Contact Lens Disinfectants Against Enveloped and Nonenveloped Pathogenic Viruses Causing Conjunctivitis.

OBJECTIVES: Contact lens (CL) contamination carries the risk of viral keratoconjunctivitis transmission, particularly to CL users. Inadequate disinfection and viral stability in CL disinfectants of Human adenovirus (HAdV-D) and Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can contribute to ocular infections. In this study, we evaluated the antiviral efficacy of commercial CL disinfectants against these viruses. METHODS: Before the experiment, the cytotoxicity of CL disinfectants was assessed in A549 and Vero E6/TMPRSS2 cells to determine the detection limits. Stock viruses and

Multidimensional review of viral infectious ocular diseases: Post-Pandemic epidemiology and future directions for control.

Viral Infectious Ocular Diseases (VIODs) remain a major global cause of vision loss, ranging from highly transmissible conjunctivitis to blinding keratitis and complex neuro-ophthalmic syndromes. Furthermore, the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and subsequent reported ocular diseases have fundamentally changed the landscape of VIOD epidemiology and management. Epidemiological data indicate heterogeneous effects on common infections such as Adenoviral conjunctivitis due to varying compliance with hygiene measures. Concurrently, systemic immunological events, notably those induced b

Diagnostic Performance of a Silver-Amplified vs. a Non-Amplified Lateral Flow Kit for Adenoviral Conjunctivitis: A Multicenter Prospective Study.

Accurate diagnosis of adenoviral conjunctivitis is critical for timely treatment and infection control. However, conventional lateral flow kits often lack sufficient sensitivity, especially in mild cases. This multicenter prospective study evaluated the diagnostic performance of silver-amplified lateral flow kits (SA-LFKs) compared with non-silver-amplified kits (NSA-LFKs), using real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) as the reference standard. Tear samples from 200 patients with suspected adenoviral conjunctivitis were collected across four clinics and analyzed for sensitivity, specificit

Viral eye: Emerging insights into corneal and ocular surface viral infections.

Viral infections of the ocular surface significantly contribute to morbidity and visual impairment globally. The herpes simplex virus (HSV), adenovirus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and human papillomavirus (HPV) are predominant pathogens impacting the cornea and conjunctiva, resulting in recurrent illness, epidemic outbreaks, and virus-associated neoplasia. Progress in virology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics has enhanced comprehension of host-virus interactions and introduced novel therapeutic opportunities. A narrative literature review was performed utilizing PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Sc

Usutu virus-induced meningoencephalitis in immunocompetent mice is characterized by the recruitment of mononuclear cells and a proinflammatory T helper 1 response.

Usutu virus (USUV) is an arbovirus and has emerged as a potential cause of encephalitis in humans and other vertebrates. The increasing detection of USUV in mosquitoes and birds across Africa and Central Europe, along with the lack of specific treatments or vaccines for many encephalitic orthoflaviviruses, underscores the need for focused research. In this study, we developed a USUV infection model in immunocompetent C57BL/6 mice (8-12 weeks old) to characterize disease development and associated inflammatory mechanisms. Mice were intracranially infected with 104 PFU of USUV, leading to neurol

Case Report: Challenges in diagnosing Kawasaki disease in children under 3 months of age: a case series report.

Infants younger than 3 months old often present with incomplete Kawasaki Disease (KD), where not all the classical features are present. This makes the diagnosis challenging, as KD may be easily confused with other common pediatric conditions, such as viral infections, bacterial sepsis, or toxic shock syndrome. Moreover, the risk of developing coronary artery abnormalities is reportedly higher in younger infants, making timely diagnosis and treatment critical. Here we reported three cases of KD in infants under three months, each illustrating the challenges in diagnosis due to the absence of t

The first report on detecting SARS-CoV-2 inside bacteria of  the human gut microbiome: A case series on asymptomatic family members and a child with COVID-19.

Many studies report the importance of using feces as source sample for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in patients with COVID-19 symptoms but who are negative to oropharyngeal/ nasopharyngeal tests. Here, we report the case of an asymptomatic child whose family members had negative results with the rapid antigen nasopharyngeal swab tests. The 21-month-old child presented with fever, diarrhea, bilateral conjunctivitis, and conspicuous lacrimation. In this study, analysis for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in fecal samples by using Luminex technology allowed accurate detection of the presence of the viral RNA

Human conjunctiva organoids to study ocular surface homeostasis and disease.

The conjunctival epithelium covering the eye contains two main cell types: mucus-producing goblet cells and water-secreting keratinocytes, which present mucins on their apical surface. Here, we describe long-term expanding organoids and air-liquid interface representing mouse and human conjunctiva. A single-cell RNA expression atlas of primary and cultured human conjunctiva reveals that keratinocytes express multiple antimicrobial peptides and identifies conjunctival tuft cells. IL-4/-13 exposure increases goblet and tuft cell differentiation and drastically modifies the conjunctiva secretome.

Avian influenza virus cross-infections as test case for pandemic preparedness: From epidemiological hazard models to sequence-based early viral warning systems.

Pandemic preparedness starts with an early warning system of viruses with a pandemic potential. Based on information collected in a multitude of surveys, hazard models were developed identifying influenza viruses presenting a pandemic threat. Scores are attributed for 10 viral traits by expert panels which identified avian influenza viruses (AIV) belonging to subtypes H7N9 and H5N1 as representing the greatest pandemic risk. In 2013, more than 100 human cases infected with AIV H7N9 were observed in China. Case fatality rate (CFR) was high (27%), but the human-to-human transmission rate was low
