A study was carried out in 40 patients with various superficial fungal diseases, confirmed by culture or microscopic examination, to assess the therapeutic efficacy and local tolerability of 1% bifonazole cream. Patients with more than one clinical diagnosis at the time of entry were treated according to the number of conditions present. The cream was applied once daily to the affected areas and treatment duration varied according to persistence or resolution of the clinical signs and symptoms in the individual patient. In connection with three of eight recent cases of familial benign chronic pemphigus (FBCP) a brief review of its clinical, immunofluorescent, microscopic, and ultramicroscopic characteristics was made, with special emphasis on the differential diagnosis. The two main clinical aspects of the disease are emphasized: the moist, macerated, and intertriginous (candidiasis-like) variety, and the polycyclic plaque, with active and lichenoid edges (tinea corporis-like). Treatment was only partially successful, but slightly more effective with the lichenoid form of disease.

Nonspecific gyrate erythemas (NGE) are commonly associated with hypersensitivity reactions to exogenous or endogenous antigens. A case of NGE with clinical resemblance to tinea corporis in a patient with a dental radicular cyst is reported. Cutaneous lesions disappeared after surgical excision of the dental cyst. The clinical and pathological details are described and the relationship between radicular cyst and cutaneous lesions discussed. Earlier reports are reviewed and the possibility of a focal origin is emphasized.

Itraconazole, the first orally active triazole antifungal agent, was tested in 185 cases of acute or chronic (recurrent) dermatophytosis. The skin infections were divided into two major diagnostic groups: tinea corporis/tinea cruris (91 cases) and tinea pedis/tinea manuum (94 cases). There is a wide variety of highly effective topical antifungal agents available for the treatment of dermatophytosis. In more widespread infections or those involving hair or nails oral therapy with griseofulvin or ketoconazole can be used. With both forms of therapy certain types of dermatophyte infection are clinically resistant to treatment. These include onychomycosis, infections of the sole caused by T.rubrum and certain forms of tinea capitis (e.g. favus) or tinea corporis. A case of tinea corporis involving the skin overlying the thyroid gland is described in a 36-year-old man who had received radioiodine treatment for Graves' disease. The dermatophytosis mimicked a delayed roentgen erythema. Radiation to the dermis may have locally altered the cell-mediated immunity and predisposed this patient to the dermatophytosis.

Prior to 1982, no reliable information was available on prevailing dermatophyte species or infections in Iceland. In 1983-1984 fungal cultures performed on 96 patients revealed that Trichophyton tonsurans was the most common isolate, followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum. There were no cases of tinea capitis and tinea corporis was rare, but the most common sites of infection were the feet and toenails.

Thirty-four psoriatic patients (23 males, 11 females) were found to have skin manifestations of dermatophyte infection. Tinea pedis was observed in 20 cases, tinea cruris in 6 and tinea manuum in 2. An open, multicentre study was carried out in 103 patients with confirmed dermatophyte infections (tinea cruris or tinea corporis). The merits of oral ketoconazole and griseofulvin in dermatophytosis have been compared in a double blind study on 74 patients with 152 infected sites. Four hundered cases of dermatophytoses confirmed microscopically, were analysed. it was more common in 11 to 20 years age group mid males. Females acquired tinea corporis more commonly. Tinea cruris was more frequent in males. Ma3dmum cases were of tinea cruris followed by tinea cruris et corpmis and tinea corporis in that order. the isolation rate on culture was 70.75%. The relative incidence of Trichophyton rubrum was maximum and it was found in all clinical entities.
