BACKGROUND: Complete hydatidiform moles coexisting with a fetus (CHMCF) are uncommon. Although CHMCF is associated with perinatal complications and post-molar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN), necessitating post-delivery chemotherapy, live birth remains feasible. This report presents 14 cases of CHMCF in Japan.
METHODS: We reviewed medical records of patients with CHMCF treated at our hospital from 2000 to 2020 and summarized clinical data, including maternal age, pregnancy details, delivery outcomes, fertility treatments, serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels, and ultrason

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Invasive mole is a rare subset of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN), occasionally arising from a partial molar pregnancy. If untreated, it may lead to severe complications, including uterine invasion and hemorrhage.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 44-year-old woman with persistent vaginal bleeding and rising β-hCG levels following the evacuation of a partial hydatidiform mole. Despite methotrexate therapy, the disease progressed, necessitating hysterectomy due to hemorrhagic complications. Histopathology confirmed an invasive mole. Postoperatively, β-hCG re

Molar pregnancy is a rare reproductive anomaly that globally affects 1:1,000-1,500 pregnancies. It is caused by aberrant fertilization and can be associated with medical complications or progress to postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. Molar pregnancy presents with two distinct entities, complete and partial hydatidiform mole, which differ in their clinical, genetic, and prognostic aspects. Maternal age and history of molar pregnancy are the main risk factors for the occurrence of molar pregnancy. Early diagnosis of molar pregnancy by ultrasonography is associated with a decrease in

INTRODUCTION: Aneuploidies are commonly implicated in spontaneous abortions. Trisomy with concurrent monosomy of chromosome X is a rare finding that may mimic hydatidiform mole.
METHODS: We describe a case of trisomy 15 and monosomy X in a product of conception. Ultrasound revealed a gestation with absent cardiac activity; pregnancy was terminated by dilation and curettage at 11 weeks, 6 days. Histopathologic examination and cytogenetic analysis were performed on the products of conception to identify the cause of pregnancy loss.
RESULTS: Chromosome microarray revealed a chromosome complemen

Molar pregnancy (MP) is a gestational disorder resulting from abnormal fertilization, leading to atypical trophoblastic proliferation and the formation of a complete or partial hydatidiform mole. This condition represents the most common form of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) and carries a significant risk of progression to gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). Although rare in high-income countries, MP remains up to ten times more prevalent in low-income and developing countries, contributing to preventable maternal morbidity and mortality. This narrative review provides an upda

A hydatidiform mole, also known as molar pregnancy, is a form of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) characterized by abnormal trophoblastic proliferation originating from the placenta. An invasive mole, a rare but potentially life-threatening variant of GTD, is defined by the invasion of trophoblastic tissue into the myometrium and, in some cases, beyond the uterus. We present the case of a 30-year-old multiparous woman who presented with persistent vaginal bleeding and lower abdominal pain approximately one month after self-administering an oral abortifacient. Emergency surgical interven

Hydatidiform mole is a trophoblastic disorder resulting from abnormal fertilization. Diagnosis is established through a combination of clinical findings, elevated serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels, and characteristic features on transvaginal ultrasound. Timely and accurate diagnosis is essential for initiating prompt treatment and preventing medical complications. Uterine evacuation, preferably via vacuum aspiration, is the treatment of choice due to its high efficacy and safety profile. Adjunctive techniques, such as hysteroscopy and intraoperative ultrasonography, enhance the s

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent hydatidiform mole (RHM) is a rare disorder which is characterized by the presence of at least two molar pregnancies. The mutations in the NLRP7 and KHDC3L genes are responsible for the majority of recurrent molar pregnancies. This study aimed to demonstrate the diversity and frequency of NLRP7 and KHDC3L gene mutations in our Turkish cohort with recurrent molar pregnancies, and to establish genotype-phenotype correlation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was aimed to represent the detected NLRP7 and KHDC3L gene variants and reproductive history of 32 recurrent mole hydatidiform

Gestational trophoblastic tumors (GTTs) encompass a spectrum of neoplastic conditions, including invasive mole, choriocarcinoma, placental site trophoblastic tumor, and epithelioid trophoblastic tumor. Invasive mole, which frequently develops following a complete hydatidiform mole, represents the most common form. A cancer diagnosis constitutes a profoundly destabilizing experience, often resulting in considerable psychological distress. Moreover, while chemotherapy remains the cornerstone of treatment, it is frequently associated with adverse effects that compromise both quality of life and p

OBJECTIVE: Coexistence of hydatidiform mole (HM) and normal pregnancy in twin pregnancies is an extremely rare phenomenon. In HM, overproduction of human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) by proliferating trophoblasts often results in extremely high serum β-hCG levels, which in turn causes a hook effect during the detection of β-hCG concentrations using immunochemiluminescent methods. This case highlights the critical role of serial dilution in mitigating hook effect-induced false-negative β-hCG results.
CASE REPORT: This article reports a case of a 28-year-old woman presented to our hospital at

INTRODUCTION: The morphology-based differential diagnosis of Hydatidiform Mole (HM) of the Complete (CHM) and Partial (PHM) types is challenging because of earlier diagnosis of HM owing to the universal application of ultrasound during antenatal care. HMs may present with amplified oncogenes or other gene mutations, resulting in recurrent or neoplastic disease. The cell proliferation markers Ki-67 and HER2 may contribute to the final HM subtype and prognosis. Much is known about the basic mechanisms of HM development; however, other molecular diagnostic and predictive markers need to be invest

Choriocarcinoma is a rare gynecologic malignancy. MicroRNAs, which are noncoding RNAs approximately 22 nucleotides in length, are known to regulate gene expression and play important roles in various cancers; however, their functions in choriocarcinoma remain largely unknown. This study aimed to identify disease-specific microRNAs involved in choriocarcinoma development. Eleven cases of choriocarcinoma and five cases of complete hydatidiform mole treated at our institution were analyzed. Total RNA was extracted from trophoblast cells in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens using laser c

We present the case of a 22-year-old woman who initially presented with vaginal bleeding following a two-month menstrual delay and ultrasound suspicion of an anembryonic pregnancy. She underwent two manual uterine evacuations at a regional hospital, and histopathology confirmed a complete hydatidiform mole. She was referred to a gestational trophoblastic disease reference center with severe pelvic pain and persistent vomiting for two days, refractory to analgesics. On admission, she exhibited signs of peritoneal irritation. Ultrasound revealed the presence of theca-lutein cysts in the left ova

Approximately 10-15 % of clinically recognized pregnancies result in miscarriage, with chromosomal abnormalities identified in about 50 % of early pregnancy losses (PL). Triploidy accounts for approximately 12 % of all chromosomal abnormalities in miscarriages. The additional haploid set of chromosomes in triploidy may be of paternal (diandric triploidy) or maternal (digynic triploidy) origin. Diandric triploidy is associated with a partial hydatidiform mole (PHM), while pregnancies involving diploid embryos with two paternal genomes (and loss of the maternal nuclear genome) are the most commo

INTRODUCTION: Hydatidiform mole (HM) incidence has shown contrasting temporal trends across different regions.
METHODS: We analyzed HM incidence in Lombardy, Italy, from 2009 to 2022. HM cases were identified through regional registry data.
RESULTS: A total of 1,131 HM cases occurred among 1,471,567 pregnancies, averaging 77 cases per 100,000 pregnancies. A significant decline was observed between 2009 and 2015 (p = 0.01), but no consistent trend emerged over the full period (p = 0.76). HM incidence was highest in women aged ≥46 (699.1/100,000) and <20 (107.6/100,000), and among women of Asi
