Early Hypertriglyceridemia and Respiratory Outcomes in Preterm Neonates.

Background: Hypertriglyceridemia (HiTG) is a frequent metabolic complication in preterm neonates receiving parenteral nutrition (PN), with potential implications for respiratory outcomes. However, predisposing factors and the clinical impact of HiTG in this population remain poorly defined. Objectives: To identify factors predisposing preterm neonates to HiTG development and to assess the association between HiTG and neonatal respiratory morbidity. Methods: A retrospective matched cohort study was conducted, nested within a single-center cohort of neonates receiving routine parenteral nutritio

Short-term obstetrical and neonatal complications in women with endometriosis.

OBJECTIVE: Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological condition that affects women in their reproductive age and could potentially lead to reproductive difficulties. Despite extensive research into the impact of endometriosis on fertility and reproductive health, its association with obstetric complications and short-term neonatal outcomes is still an area of limited understanding with conflicting evidence in published studies. We conducted this study to explore a potential effect of endometriosis on obstetric and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective population-based cohort study was con

Evaluating the association between household water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and selected placenta-related complications in The Gambia, Kenya and Mozambique.

Placenta-related complications contribute substantially to maternal and perinatal mortality globally, with the greatest burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, the potential influence of inadequate household water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) on these outcomes remains poorly characterised. We investigated associations between household WASH conditions and selected placenta-related complications, including pre-eclampsia, small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and stillbirth, in The Gambia, Kenya and Mozambique. This secondary analysis was nested within PRECISE (PREgnancy Care In

[Research progress and vaccination strategies of respiratory syncytial virus vaccines for pregnant women].

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a predominant global pathogen responsible for severe lower respiratory tract infections and hospitalizations in infants, especially those aged under six months. To date, no vaccines have been approved for active immunization against RSV in infant populations, leaving monoclonal antibodies as the primary modality for immediate, direct RSV protection. Maternal vaccination during pregnancy has evolved as a critical passive immunization approach, wherein vaccine-elicited maternal antibodies cross the placenta to confer early-life protection on neonates and youn

Trimester-specific associations of maternal vitamin D metabolic markers with risks of small vulnerable newborns: a prospective birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D metabolites beyond total 25(OH)D may influence fetal development, yet their trimester-specific associations with small vulnerable newborns (SVN) remain underexplored. This study examined longitudinal associations of multiple vitamin D metabolic markers with SVN-related outcomes and identified key determinants during pregnancy. METHODS: In this prospective cohort of 2,505 mother-infant pairs from China, serum levels of five vitamin D metabolites 25(OH)D2, 25(OH)D3, total 25(OH)D, 3-epi-25(OH)D3, and 24,25(OH)2D3] were quantified using HPLC-MS/MS. Two vitamin D metabolite

Coagulation and fibrinolysis markers at birth as early predictors of surgical necrotizing enterocolitis in extremely low-birth-weight infants.

PURPOSE: Early identification of surgical necrotizing enterocolitis (S-NEC) before clinical deterioration remains challenging in extremely low-birth-weight infants (ELBWIs). We evaluated whether coagulation and fibrinolysis markers at birth could predict subsequent S-NEC. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 250 ELBWIs (< 1000 g) treated from 2013 to 2022; 22 developed S-NEC. Eleven coagulation and fibrinolysis markers were measured within 24 h of birth. Multivariable logistic regression models and a simple birth-time risk score were developed. RESULTS: Relative to controls, S-NEC infants ha

Recent minimum wage policy and its impacts on birth outcomes.

After a pause in statutory minimum wage increases during the Great Recession, several states increased their minimum wages, including increases as large as 60% over just a few years. Using a triple difference-in-differences framework and data on the universe of births from 2010 to 2019, this study investigates how recent minimum wage hikes affected birth outcomes. We first document sizeable negative impacts of minimum wage policy on the labor supply and economic well-being of females aged 16-44. We then document small adverse effects on birth outcomes, estimating that minimum wage increases le

Iodine exposure and thyroid function after prophylactic intragastric iodinated contrast administration for meconium obstruction of prematurity in extremely low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) increase the risk of meconium obstruction of prematurity in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. While prophylactic intragastric amidotrizoate (Gastrografin®) promotes meconium excretion, concerns persist regarding iodine load and thyroid dysfunction. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed infants (<30 weeks, <700 g) born 2016-2024. The treated group (n=20) comprised SGA infants of mothers with HDP receiving prophylactic 5-fold diluted Gastrografin (iodine: 148-222 mg/kg) after stabilization. Co
