Disseminated mucormycosis is a rare life-threatening fungal infection that is uniquely seen in severely immunocompromised patients including those with hematological malignancies. We report a case of disseminated mucormycosis with a biopsy-proven gastrointestinal and oral cavity involvement in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia during induction chemotherapy. The patient had a successful outcome with limited resection of the involvement bowel segment, multiple maxillary dental extractions, debridement of the alveolus and hard palate, and combined antifungal therapy. After clinical improvemen

Rhinocerebral and pulmonary mucormycosis are the main manifestations of mucormycosis; however, disseminated pulmonary associated with renal mucormycosis is rarely reported. In this paper, we report a rare fatal case of disseminated pulmonary and renal mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus in a 50-year-old man with poorly controlled hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prolonged use of corticosteroids for the treatment of his reiterative gouty arthritis. In this patient, the use of corticosteroids and poorly controlled diabetes were considered underlying risk factor for his disseminated muc

OBJECTIVES: Mucorale has come into a significant pathogen over recent decades. Nonetheless, mucormycosis-related mortality rates among patients with hematological disorders remain unascertained. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine mortality rates of mucormycosis in patients with hematology-related conditions.
METHODS: We scoured PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for original papers exploring the intersection of Mucormycosis and Hematological Diseases (from 2000 to 2022). We scrutinized the overall mortality across three distinct periods, as well as differentiating between high-in

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: India witnessed an explosive rise in mucormycosis following COVID-19 infection. Pulmonary mucormycosis closely followed rhino orbital mucormycosis as the most common presentation. The need for advanced resources and lack of clinical suspicion for COVID-19-associated pulmonary mucormycosis led to widespread underdiagnosis and poor response to late therapy. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of pulmonary mucormycosis in COVID-19-associated rhino-orbital mucormycosis using non-invasive techniques, such as sputum microscopy and chest imaging.

BACKGROUND: Although pulmonary mucormycosis is rare, it is highly invasive and carries a significant mortality rate. Due to its nonspecific clinical manifestations, it is often misdiagnosed as other invasive fungal diseases. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid metagenomic next-generation sequencing is a rapid, precise, and comprehensive method for pathogen detection, showing great potential in the early diagnosis of pulmonary mucormycosis in a single-center retrospective series. It provides clinicians with faster and more accurate etiological information, thereby improving patient outcomes and reduci

Reports of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis have been increasing in frequency since early 2021, particularly among patients with uncontrolled diabetes. Patients with diabetes and hyperglycaemia often have an inflammatory state that could be potentiated by the activation of antiviral immunity to SARS-CoV2, which might favour secondary infections. In this Review, we analysed 80 published and unpublished cases of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis. Uncontrolled diabetes, as well as systemic corticosteroid treatment, were present in most patients with COVID-19-associated mucormycosis, and rhino-orbi

Secondary fungal infections are a critical problem that accompany immunosuppressive therapy for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We report a fatal case of COVID-19 with disseminated mucormycosis diagnosed during autopsy. A 58-year-old man with diabetes was hospitalized for severe COVID-19 and treated with remdesivir, systemic steroids and tocilizumab. Following treatment, he was provided extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support. However, he died of multiple organ failure accompanied by pulmonary and kidney infarction, as revealed by computed tomography. Autopsy revealed that the

BACKGROUND: Disseminated mucormycosis presenting with multiple subcutaneous nodules is a rare condition with a poor prognosis, and delayed diagnosis and treatment is common.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of 64-year-old Thai woman with colorectal cancer who initially presented with Acinetobacter baumannii pneumonia and respiratory failure. Following 10 days after her admission to the intensive care unit, she developed hospital-acquired pneumonia. Five days later, multiple subcutaneous nodules appeared on both arms and both legs. Bronchoalveolar lavage and skin biopsy cultures both grew M

Mucormycosis is a rare but a devastating and lifethreatening fungal infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales usually in immunocompromised patients. Depending on the organs and tissues involved, there are sinus, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, orbital, cerebral, cutaneous and disseminated mucormycosis. Only sporadic cases of hepatic mucormycosis have been described. Hence, we present a complicated treatment management in a 16-month-old child with leukemia and generalized mucormycosis localized in the liver and in the gastrointestinal tract. The collaboration of a multidisciplinary team and

The world is already facing the devastating effects of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. A disseminated mucormycosis epidemic emerged to worsen this situation, causing havoc, especially in India. This research aimed to perform a multitargeted docking study of marine-sponge-origin bioactive compounds against mucormycosis. Information on proven drug targets and marine sponge compounds was obtained via a literature search. A total of seven different targets were selected. Thirty-five compounds were chosen using the PASS online program. For homology modeling and molecular docking, FASTA sequences and 3D st

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infections (IFI) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children with leukaemia. International guidelines recommend a monotherapy for most IFI. The use of antifungal combination therapy (ACT) has been reported, but clinical data supporting these combinations are scarce, particularly in paediatrics.
OBJECTIVE: To describe, among patients treated in our department, the situations in which an ACT was used.
RESULTS: Between January 2017 and December 2020, 239 patients (406 hospital stays) benefited from systemic antifungals. Among them, ACT was prescribe

Cutaneous mucormycosis is the third most common clinical type of mucormycosis. The signs and symptoms vary widely, and it is important to make the diagnosis as early as possible in order to achieve a better outcome. We present a systematic review of its epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment, analyzing cases published from 1958 until 2021. The review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and included 693 cases from 485 articles from 46 countries. Most publications were from North America (256 cases, 36.9%) and Asia (216 cases, 31.2%). The most common risk fact

We report the autopsy findings of a case of disseminated mucormycosis caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae, a rare pathogenic fungus of the family Mucoraceae. The patient was a 49-year-old woman with B-lymphoblastic leukemia with hyperdiploidy, who died of progressive heart failure 4 months after induction chemotherapy successfully brought about complete remission of the leukemia. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) had been administered along with anti-neoplastic drugs, and her blood neutrophil count was markedly elevated. Autopsy revealed disseminated mycotic thromboembolism and

Cunninghamellamycosis is an unusual but often highly fatal mucormycosis caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae, which belongs to the basal lineage order Mucorales. It is especially fatal when the central nervous system is involved. So far, there are few reported cases of surgical treatment for intracranial mucormycosis in children after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The surgical management of deep-seated basal ganglia fungal lesions remains controversial, and its clinical benefits are not yet well established. Herein, we present a rare case of disseminated mucormy

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection with a high mortality rate. Though typically associated with diabetes and other conditions that affect innate immune function, infections can also be precipitated by conditions such as trauma and burns. Burn patients are particularly susceptible to fungal infections due to the immune dysfunction that often accompany their wounds. Indeed case series have described mucormycosis to occur in patients with burn injuries, however the factors contributing to mortality have not been well described. Thus, the purpose of our review was to i

Mucormycosis is a fatal invasive illness most frequently seen in immunocompromised hosts with uncontrolled diabetes, hematological malignancies, organ transplantation, or long-term steroid treatment. It has a poorer outcome than other fungal diseases due to its rapid spread and resistance to antifungal agents. We report a rare case of disseminated mucormycosis including the bone marrow, peritoneum, lung, and lymph nodes in an apparently immunocompetent 58-year-old gentleman who presented with two months of ascites and weight loss. After a thorough analysis, we found aseptate fungal hyphae in t
