Sodium butyrate (SB), a salt of the short-chain fatty acid butyrate, has emerged as a promising adjunctive therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD is commonly associated with intestinal dysbiosis characterized by depletion of butyrogenic bacteria. This leads to a functionally relevant butyrate deficiency that contributes to epithelial barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and persistent mucosal inflammation. Experimental studies demonstrate that butyrate supports colonocyte energy metabolism, strengthens tight-junction integrity, enhances mucin and antimicrobial peptide productio

OBJECTIVE: Dextrocardia refers to the right-sided positioning of the heart during embryonic development and may occur in isolation or in association with visceral malposition or other malformations. However, few studies have investigated this condition. This study aimed to determine the incidence of cardiac and non-cardiac malformations, as well as to analyze long-term follow-up and survival outcomes in patients with dextrocardia.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of dextrocardia cases at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from April 22, 197

PURPOSE: This study aimed to (1) establish the occupying volume ratio (OVR), defined as the proportion of mineralized particulates within grafted sites, using particulate xenografts mixed with either saline or platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), and (2) evaluate how hydration and mechanical manipulation influence OVR in collagenated block-type xenografts.
METHODS: Three particulate xenografts and their corresponding collagenated blocks were evaluated. Particulate grafts were mixed with either saline or PRF. Collagenated blocks were assessed under 3 conditions: original, after saline hydration, and af

Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD) is a disorder arising from hemodynamic changes and venous congestion in the liver. This disease is prominent in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Although HLHS patients typically survive into adulthood, they have reduced cardiac output due to their univentricular physiology (i.e., a Fontan circuit). As a result, they have insufficient blood delivery to the liver. In comparison, patients with double outlet right ventricle (DORV), also having a univentricular circuit, have a lower incidence of FALD. In this study, we use a patient-specif

BACKGROUND: Direct electrophysiological evidence that the pulmonary vein (PV) triggers atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with complex adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) is lacking; nevertheless, PV isolation (PVI) has been empirically applied.
CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old man with an unrepaired double-outlet right ventricle with pulmonary atresia presented with AF and worsening heart failure. Radiofrequency catheter ablation was performed. Spontaneous ectopy originating from the left superior PV reproducibly triggered AF. Ipsilateral PVI achieved clinical success without complications, a

CASE SUMMARY: An 8-day-old boy with univentricular physiology presented with respiratory failure and persistent hypoxemia. Cardiac computed tomography angiography showed a dominant right ventricle with mitral atresia and an intact atrial septum, double-outlet right ventricle, and persistent ductus arteriosus. Pulmonary veins connected to the left atrium but were markedly dilated, with anomalous dual drainage through a levoatrial cardinal vein into the innominate and azygos veins. Despite emergent atrial septectomy, pulmonary artery banding, and ductal ligation, the outcome was unfavorable.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are a rare but serious complication after the Glenn procedure. Clinically, they typically present with progressive hypoxemia, which can lead to worsening cyanosis, reduced exercise tolerance, and may even progress to heart failure.
CASE SUMMARY: We report an 8-year-old boy with complex congenital heart disease, including double outlet right ventricle, ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, and pulmonary stenosis. He underwent a bidirectional Glenn procedure at 6 months of age and subsequently developed progressive cya

There are many computational models set up to predict blood flow and pressure in vascular networks. Methods for a single forward solution of such models are well established but become problematic in clinical applications, where model calibration and patient-specific parameter estimation call for repeated forward simulations of the model requiring substantial computational costs. A potential workaround is emulation, which approximates the original mathematical model by a statistical or machine learning surrogate model. Our methodological framework is based on physics-informed neural networks,

The coexistence of multiple complex congenital cardiac anomalies in a single infant - particularly unbalanced Atrioventricular Septal Defect; Double Outlet Right Ventricle; Infracardiac Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection, situs inversus, and pulmonary hypertension - is exceptionally rare and presents significant surgical and physiological challenges. A full-term male neonate was diagnosed at 25 days of age with this rare combination of defects. Despite low-flow oxygen, the baseline oxygen saturation remained at 60%-65%, and growth was severely impaired. Initial management at a tertiar

BACKGROUND: Double outlet right ventricle is a heterogeneous congenital defect in which both great arteries arise predominantly from the right ventricle. Several operative strategies exist, but contemporary paediatric outcome data have not been systematically synthesised.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and medRxiv (2000-2025) identified cohort studies and case series including ≥10 children undergoing biventricular repair strategies reported in double outlet right ventricle cohorts, including intraventricular rerouting procedures, roo

In 1949, Helen Taussig and Richard Bing described the Taussig-Bing anomaly, which is a form of conotruncal malformation in which there is a double outlet right ventricle and subpulmonic ventricular septal defect with side-by-side great arteries. Controversy exists regarding whether or not the presence of double coni should be included as part of the diagnosis, and it is not unusual to have associated aortic arch hypoplasia with or without coarctation and coronary arterial anomalies that may complicate the repair and increase surgical risks. Debate has been ongoing between single- versus two-st

BACKGROUND: Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a serious complication affecting approximately 5–12% of patients following the Fontan procedure for congenital heart disease and is associated with high mortality. Its pathophysiology is multifactorial, involving elevated central venous pressure, abnormal intestinal lymphatics, and altered mesenteric vascular resistance. No gold-standard therapy has been established, and current management approaches include hemodynamic optimization, nutritional therapy, and medications such as somatostatin analogues and spironolactone. Though spironolactone is f

Parachute tricuspid valve is an exceedingly rare congenital anomaly, often described in association with acyanotic heart defects. Its occurrence alongside cyanotic congenital heart disease is even less common. We report the case of a 1-year-old boy presenting with complex cyanotic heart disease along with parachute tricuspid valve. Detailed evaluation revealed a constellation of anomalies, including parachute tricuspid valve, double outlet right ventricle with D-malposed great arteries, severe pulmonary stenosis, and a non-routable ventricular septal defect. Echocardiography played a vital rol

Neonates comprise a special population of patients undergoing surgery, and the presence of congenital defects further complicates their anaesthetic management. This report describes a neonate born with Arnold-Chiari malformation and a ruptured myelomeningocele, who was later found to also have a double-outlet right ventricle. This report outlines the careful selection of anaesthetic agents and perioperative strategies tailored to the patient's compounded neurologic and cardiac congenital defects while catering to the surgical requirements. The patient underwent repair of the MMC under total in

BACKGROUND: The arterial switch operation (ASO) is the standard repair for complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA), but long-term data across large contemporary cohorts remain limited. In this study we evaluated 30-year survival, reintervention, and structural sequelae after ASO and identified factors that influenced late outcomes.
METHODS: A total of 1125 patients, 652 with TGA with intact ventricular septum, 389 with TGA with ventricular septal defect, and 84 with double-outlet right ventricle with Taussig-Bing anomaly who underwent ASO between 1990 and 2015 at 10 tertiary centre
