The proband and two maternal uncles were similarly affected by a unique constellation of mental retardation and physical abnormalities. There were severe retardation, growth less than the third percentile, and significantly delayed bone age. They manifested deafness, a flat nasal bridge, several ocular abnormalities, and a rudimentary scrotum with cryptorchidism, and one had a small penis. The proband also had onychodystrophy of his fingers and toes. Their birth weights and lengths were less than expected. No chromosomal or biochemical abnormality was detected. Both uncles died, but the proban

A case is reported of Apert's syndrome with severe bilateral balloonings of the temporal region in addition to other typical craniofacial deformities. He had had three previous strip craniectomies. His mentality and intelligence were normal. In order to improve his deformities, the following steps were carried out: 1. 1.5 cm frontal advancement with reshaping the horizontal arc of the supraorbital ridge by out-fracturing. 2. Bilateral temporal double turnover method with internal decompression of the temporal lobe by resection of the sphenoid wing abnormally roofing the temporal lobe. 3. Reduc

Cytogenetic investigations of children with psychomotor retardation gave evidence of pentasomia X in a twelve-month-old girl. The chromosome analysis made on the basis of lymphocyte cultures showed a 49,XXXXX caryotype; up to four X-chromatin masses were found. Total ridge count (TRC) was diminished to the very low value of 15. The clinical symptoms of our case were compared with the others published in earlier papers. In accordance with the other authors we found a low birth weight, oligophrenia, multiple abnormalities of the craniofacial skeleton (hypertelorism, epicanthus, broad root of the

The characteristics of the basal cell naevus syndrome are multiple basal cell naevi and basal cell carcinomas, cysts of the jaws, anomalies of ribs and vertebra, intracranial calcification and striking deformities of the skull, usually with a positive family anamnesis. We will discuss symptomatology, histopathology and therapy. A flemish family, where the syndrome occurs with the mother and her four children, three of whom are admitted in hospital nearly simultaneously with sinusitis maxillaris, are discussed in extenso. Also, the occurrence of the syndrome's stigmata in other members of the f

Complete or partial trisomy 14 is compatible with life. However, in the former case, mosaicism is probably always present. A case of trisomy 14 mosaicism is reported. Comparisons are made with other trisomy 14, trisomy 14 mosaicism, and duplication 14q cases previously reported. As a group, they share some clinical manifestations. The phenotype consists of multiple congenital anomalies, including microcephaly, broad nose, wide mouth, high or cleft palate, micrognathia, congenital heart disease, intrauterine growth retardation, and mental retardation. The present patient also has asthma, eczema

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons now have the capabilities to plan a total treatment for the entire face. In some instances, a team may be formed to deal with ancillary areas of expertise. Patients may be directed to members of the team who are cognizant of each other's capabilities. In this manner, the most complete type of treatment plan may be suggested to the patient.

A case of 2-month-old boy with nasofrontal encephalomeningocele was presented, which was excellently treated via intradural approach, followed by removal of herniated sac. Under the knowledge of reviewed literatures and our experiences of 14 cases of cephaloceles, its symptomatology, diagnosis and policy of treatments were discussed. As rare case was an intracranial meningoencephalocele in our series described, which showed a supracollicular cyst with brain tissue wall, communicating with aqueduct. Other emphases were placed on the differential diagnosis from holoprosencephaly with extracrania

We have studied 15 occipital, 3 frontal and one parietal cases of encephaloceles from the point of view of the etiopathogenetic, clinic and especially diagnostic problem. The diagnosis of M.E. is based on: 1) the x-ray demonstration of the bone-gap by particular projections and by tomography; 2) in the frontal M.E. the presence of face deformity, with hipertelorism and widening of nose bridge and the finding of ectopic tissue in the nose or in the oral cavity in presence of palatoschisis. Cerebral angiography and pneumoencephalography, made by tomography, are useful to show the herniated brain

Maxillo-nasal dysostosis is not uncommon as we have noted 34 new cases in eight years. The most characteristic anomalies, well described by Binder, are nasal hypoplasia both of bone and cartilage with agenesis of the nasal spine, as well as a characteristic rearrangement of the naso-labial muscles. On first seeing the patient the disease is generally recognized by the very typical aspect of the nose. There very often exists however other dental, mandibular and cervical spine anomolies. It is indispensable to look for these anomalies in the work up of patients with this malformation syndrome "t

This paper describes six Hutterite children from five families who appear to have been affected by the same syndrome that was described in two brothers by Bowen and Conradi [1]. Our additional cases confirm that the major features of the syndrome include porportionate intrauterine growth retardation, microcephaly, micrognathia, a prominent nose, rocker-bottom feet, joint limitation, and failure to thrive, with death within the first year of life. Bowen-Conradi syndrome is an autosomal recessive trait and pedigree records show that all six families now known are related to each other through tw

Two cases of sphenoethmoidal meningoencephalocele are reported. Patients are a 1 year 7 month old boy and a 3 year old boy. Although sphenoethmoidal meningoencephalocele is reasonably classified as a type of basal meningoencephalocele, the authors could not find out any reports on cases designated as such. The reason must be in difficulty to differentiate the sphenoethmoidal type from the transsphenoidal type. Authors could differentiate them using CT scan. Two other cases were found in cases reported as transsphenoidal type. Further, it is assumed that these four cases including our two cases

Two severely mentally retarded patients with a ring chromosome 22 presented with disparate phenotypes: one patient manifested only minimal dysmorphic features, whereas the other had a distinctive pattern of anomalies consisting of an abnormal skull configuration with mild maxillary hypoplasia, a large nose, thick full lips, a protruding tongue, lymphedema, hypotonia and an unsteady gait. The findings in these and previously reported patients indicate that a ring chromosome 22 is usually associated with moderate to severe mental retardation, with a range of dysplastic features from mild and non

The authors report two cases of congenital laryngotracheal stenosis in children with punctate epiphysis disease. This rare condition manifests itself clinically by dwarfism of the extremities, saddle-shaped deformity of the nose, cataract and visceral lesions. The specific common feature is the presence of radiological calcifications in bones with chondral ossification. Laryngeal or tracheal localisations are rare. They may be associated with laryngotracheal stenosis. On the basis of these two cases and of eight other found in the recent literature, the authors attempt to define the relationsh

This peper describes the rare cryptophthalmus syndrome combined with several other malformations of the urogenital tract and of the nose, in addition to dyscephalia and cutaneous syndactilism of fingers and toes. Because of a high incidence of parental consanguinity autosomal recessive heredity is discussed.

Between 1971 and 1977, 40 patients with orbital hypertelorism were operated on by the craniofacial team in Toronto. Results have improved as a result of this experience. Tomography in two planes has revealed four types of medial orbital wall deformity. Cephalographs proved inadequate to understand this three-dimensional problem. Mobilization of the orbits and their correct realignment, with removal of the precise amount of interorbital bone, are only preliminary steps in producing good results. Different techniques for reattachment of the medial canthal ligament, correct orientation of the lat

This paper describes a new, simple technique for instantaneously rating velopharyngeal competency during speech. The instrument, designed on the basis of data obtained from aerodynamic studies, provides an index of palatopharyngeal closure. Results from model studies and 75 cleft palate subjects demonstrate how the instrument is used to differentiate between problems related to velopharyngeal closure and those resulting from other variables which often influence the performance of speakers with cleft palate.

During a period of 19 years we have treated 65 infants with choanal atresia. Thirty of them showed a bilateral atresia, thirty-five a unilateral (29 left-sided, 6 right-sided). Fifty patients were girls, fifteen boys. In 27 cases the abnormality was combined with other anomalies. Most infants have been operated upon in the first six months of their life by a transpalatinal approach in general anethesia. From the results the following conclusions can be made: early treatment is the method of choice; restoration of nasal permeability, although minimal, allows normal nutrition and diminishes a nu

A partial duplication of the distal segment of the long arm of chromosome 5 (q31 leads to qter) was observed in an infant with congenital malformations and dysmorphic features. The phenotypically normal father had a balanced translocation between the long arm of chromosome 5 and the short arm of chromosome 9: 46,XY,t(5;9)(q31;p24). The clinical and cytogenetic data obtained from six patients with partial duplications of two different long arm segments of chromosome 5 suggest that partial duplication of the distal long arm of chromosome 5 is associated with microcephaly, hypertelorism, epicanth

Double translocation heterozygosity t(2;6),t(7;12) in three generations of a Dutch family is described: the segregation of a double translocation in more than one generation has not been previously published. The index case was a 16-year-old mentally retarded boy with partial trisomy 12p who showed several dysmorphic features such as high prominent forehead, flat face, flat and short nose bridge, short nose, dysplastic ears, prominent lower lip, and several skeletal abnormalities. Based on the findings in this patient and those in nine other cases, the existence of a specific trisomy 12p syndr
