BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains a significant public health challenge, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). While individual species prevalence is well documented, the global burden of concurrent co-infection remains poorly quantified, despite its significant clinical and therapeutic implications. This study determined the prevalence of Schistosoma haemtobium (Sh) and Schistosoma mansoni (Sm) co-infection in SSA and its variation with age and geographical location.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of PubMed, African Journal Online, EMBASE and Google Scholar for

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma mekongi remains an important cause of intestinal schistosomiasis in the lower Mekong River Basin. Sensitive environmental surveillance tools are needed to support transmission monitoring, particularly where conventional snail surveys are seasonally constrained. This study developed and evaluated a multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay for simultaneous detection of S. mekongi and its intermediate snail host, Neotricula aperta, in aquatic environmental DNA (eDNA) samples.
METHODS: Singleplex and multiplex qPCR assays targeting S. mekongi and N. aperta were compared to

Schistosomiasis is a neglected disease caused by parasites of the genus Schistosoma that poses serious public health problems. The liver is one of the organs seriously affected by the disease as it lodges Schistosoma eggs. We show results by nonlinear imaging techniques, Second Harmonic Generation and Two-Photon Excitation Fluorescence, to characterize mice tissues infected with Schistosoma mansoni in an experimental model. We followed the evolution of the disease in liver tissue sections through three stages: 30, 60, and 120 days post-infection-the pre-patent, acute, and early chronic phases,

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Treatment with praziquantel; the sole current medication for human schistosomiasis, is associated with incomplete resolution of Schistosoma mansoni-induced liver pathology. Therefore, there is a crucial need to introduce adjuvant agents that can mitigate the pathological events. This study aims to assess the hepatoprotective effects of the oral anti-diabetic drug dapagliflozin, alone and in combination with praziquantel. In the present research, combined dapagliflozin and praziquantel therapy c

BACKGROUND: Human schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease of major public health importance in sub-Saharan Africa. Mass drug administration (MDA) with praziquantel (PZQ) is the cornerstone of schistosomiasis control. However, its effectiveness is challenged by variable cure rates and rapid reinfection. Longitudinal data on reinfection and true incidence, which are critical for refining control strategies, are scarce from high-transmission foci like the Lango sub-region in Northern Uganda. This study assessed the efficacy of PZQ and the 24-week dynamics of reinfection and incidence of Schistosom

OBJECTIVES: Helminth parasites infect over a quarter of the global population and can profoundly modulate host immunity, potentially influencing vaccine performance and the spread of pandemic pathogens such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Despite the high global endemicity of helminth infections, their impact on immune responses to various COVID-19 vaccines remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Schistosoma infection on the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of messenger RNA (mRNA)- and protein-based COVID-19 vaccines.

Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic blood flukes, affects 250 million humans worldwide, leading to widespread chronic illness and eventually death. Praziquantel is the only widely used and broadly effective drug for schistosomiasis; however, reports of reduced efficacy raise concerns about future therapy. To identify alternative compounds with antischistosomal activity, almost 1000 bacterial and fungal extracts were screened against adult Schistosoma mansoni worm pairs. This effort revealed Streptomyces sp. ST501019 is a producer of strevertene A, a 28-membered pe

We report an imported case of co-infection with fascioliasis and schistosomiasis in a 37-year-old patient with no known medical history, originally from Djibouti, a country in sub-Saharan East Africa. The diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of Schistosoma ova, suggestive clinical symptoms, positive serologies to both fascioliasis and schistosomiasis, and the atypical appearance of hepatic lesions on MRI. The patient was in France as a tourist. He was treated with a dual therapy of triclabendazole and praziquantel. His clinical condition improved without treatment-related side effects. Thi

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis control relies on the continued effectiveness of praziquantel (PZQ), yet individual and spatial heterogeneity in PZQ efficacy in the context of repeated mass drug administration (MDA) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to identify individual and spatial determinants of PZQ efficacy against Schistosoma mansoni in rural Uganda.
METHODS: We studied 3870 participants aged 5-90 years from 52 villages in Pakwach, Buliisa, and Mayuge districts in Uganda. Participants were recruited to the SchistoTrack cohort in January-February of 2022 and 2023. Participants rece

Schistosoma mansoni is a major cause of schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease that induces granulomatous inflammation, fibrosis, and liver damage. Fucoidan (FUC), a sulfated polysaccharide from brown seaweed, was evaluated for its anti-helminthic, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic effects against immature stages of S. mansoni in mice. Forty-eight CD-1 Swiss male albino mice were infected and allocated into six groups: infected untreated control, praziquantel-treated, and FUC-treated groups at 7, 21, 35, and 42 days post-infection. Treatment with FUC at 7, 21, and 35 dpi significantly

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by human-infective schistosomes (Trematoda: Schistosoma). Intestinal schistosomiasis in sub-Saharan Africa and the Neotropics is caused primarily by Schistosoma mansoni and is transmitted by several Biomphalaria planorbid snail species. Adult male and female parasites in the definitive mammalian host pair and reside in the mesenteric vasculature; females lay eggs that traverse the intestinal wall to be excreted, but a significant proportion become trapped in host tissues, especially the liver, eliciting granulomatous immune responses that

Schistosomiasis remains a major neglected tropical disease, affecting approximately 600 million individuals worldwide and accounting for nearly 500,000 deaths annually. The principal causative species-Schistosoma haematobium, S. mansoni, and S. japonicum-drive significant morbidity through hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and progressive hepatic fibrosis. Praziquantel (PZQ) remains the cornerstone of treatment; however, its limited efficacy against immature worms and eggs, combined with concerns over emerging drug resistance, underscores the urgent need for novel therapeutic alternatives. This stud

Schistosomiasis is an important snail-borne neglected tropical disease, and detecting infected snails is a priority for its control and elimination. However, conventional parasitological methods, such as crushed snails and cercarial shedding, have limited sensitivity. In this study, we developed a novel loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay (smND1-LAMP) targeting the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1) gene of Schistosoma mansoni. The assay was optimized at 65 °C for 1 h and demonstrated a detection limit of one copy of the pUC57/smND1 recombinant plasmid. Its diagno

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma mansoni infection and chronic alcohol consumption are major public health concerns that predominantly affect the liver, yet their combined hepatic effects remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms associated with this co-exposure in an endemic setting in Cameroon.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in Makenéné, Cameroon, including 310 adults stratified by parasitic status and level of alcohol exposure. Infection was diagnosed using Kato-Katz and POC-CCA assays. Alcohol exposure was assesse

BACKGROUND: Intestinal schistosomiasis, caused by infection with Schistosoma japonicum, remains a zoonotic neglected tropical disease (NTD) of significant public health importance in parts of China, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Ongoing schistosomiasis control programmes in these areas have achieved significant reductions in disease prevalence, transmission, and morbidity associated with infection; however, they have also presented new challenges, particularly in detecting and monitoring low-intensity and low-prevalence S. japonicum infections. Highly sensitive and highly specific diagnostic

Various forms of voluntary migration have been and remain among the leading causes of the worldwide dispersal of parasites. Although helminthic infections are common in Africa, they are rare in Israel, making diagnosis challenging for many clinicians. We present 22 years of experience diagnosing under-recognized, long-lasting helminthic infections in migrants from African countries: Strongyloides stercoralis (up to 24 years), Schistosoma mansoni (up to 15 years), and hookworm (up to 12 years).

Intestinal schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma mansoni, remains a persistent source of morbidity despite ongoing mass drug administration. While parasite egg deposition disrupts host gut homeostasis, the specific effects of varying infection burdens on this microbial ecosystem remain a critical knowledge gap. Understanding these intensity-dependent shifts is vital for elucidating mechanisms of chronic disease progression and potential treatment failures. To address this, the study aimed to identify key microbial taxa associated with gut dysbiosis during S. mansoni infection and to determine

BACKGROUND: Hepatic granuloma formation in Schistosoma mansoni infection is driven by dysregulated cytokine networks and pro-fibrotic signaling pathways, including STAT3, Wnt/β-catenin, and microRNA let-7a circuits. Interleukin-22 (IL-22) is an epithelial-targeted cytokine that signals predominantly through STAT3 and has been implicated in tissue protection and fibrosis modulation. This investigation examined whether IL-22 modulates the STAT3/β-catenin/let-7a molecular axis in schistosomal hepatic granulomas and compared these molecular effects with praziquantel (PZQ) anthelmintic therapy.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption in Cameroon is approximately twice the African average, and Makenene is a hotspot of Schistosoma mansoni infection in the country. Considering that both schistosomiasis mansoni and alcohol abuse can induce liver pathology, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of S. mansoni and alcohol abuse comorbidity in Makenene, Cameroon.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Makenene, including 431 adults from four communities. Schistosoma mansoni was diagnosed using Kato-Katz (KK) and point-of-care circulating
