BACKGROUND: Cysticercosis is caused by the larval stages of Taenia and Versteria species. While Taenia solium, associated with a domestic life cycle, is the primary etiological agent of human (neuro)cysticercosis worldwide, sporadic cases involving Taenia species linked to wildlife have also been reported. A 72‑year‑old immunocompetent woman presented in October 2024 to the Emergency Department with paresthesia, gait imbalance, and severe headache. Neuroimaging revealed a <1‑cm edematous lesion in the frontal cortex, suspicious for metastasis. Surgical removal was performed. Histopathological

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, is a lethal zoonotic disease. Population screening for early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment, and novel diagnostic antigens are needed for diagnostic purposes.
METHODS: E. multilocularis serine protease inhibitor 1 (EmSPI-1) was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting were used to assess gene expression at different life-cycle stages of the tapeworm. The diagnostic potential of recombinant EmSPI-1 (rEmSPI-1) was evaluated by enzyme-linked im

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is an apex predator and an important sentinel for trophically transmitted helminths acquired via predation on wild ungulates. On 2 March 2022, an adult male lynx that was road-killed in the Apuseni Mountains (Surducel hunting ground, Bihor County) was collected, frozen for biosafety, and a necropsy was performed. Taeniid cestodes were detected, with a total intestinal burden of nine adult specimens. Genetic analyses confirmed Taenia lynciscapreoli, and the obtained sequences were deposited in GenBank (PV843597, PV855065, PV844409). Phylogenetic inference based on

Background: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonotic parasitic disease with a significant impact on public health in endemic regions. The liver is the most frequently affected organ, and ultrasound-based surveys are considered a reliable tool for detecting asymptomatic infections. As population-based data specifically addressing hepatic CE prevalence in Türkiye remain limited, we aimed to assess the prevalence of liver cystic echinococcosis in Türkiye using only ultrasound-based surveys. Methods: A systematic review was conducted, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, to estimate t

Echinococcosis poses a major public-health challenge and substantial socioeconomic burdens in pastoral regions. Yet the spatial transmission risks in China and their drivers remain insufficiently understood. Using a national cross-sectional survey of human and animal echinococcosis (2012-2016), we applied ensemble machine-learning models to identify environmental determinants of disease distribution, predict infection risk in animal hosts, and project human transmission risk. Model-predicted animal-host infection risk increased under humid, low-temperature conditions. Human cystic echinococcos

BACKGROUND: Infection with Echinococcus multilocularis causes alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a severe parasitic disease characterised by progressive hepatic infiltration and fibrosis. Current treatment options remain limited, and the immune-mediated mechanisms underlying fibrosis are not fully understood. This study investigated the role of the IL-33/ST2 axis in AE-associated immunopathology and evaluated the effects of ST2 blockade in an experimental model.
METHODS: A murine model of AE was established in C57BL/6 mice, which were allocated to untreated infected, anti-ST2-treated infected and

Echinococcus multilocularis, which causes alveolar echinococcosis, can infect a wide range of hosts. Increasing interactions among wildlife, domestic animals, and humans may enhance the transmission risk in endemic areas. Surveillance of E. multilocularis in definitive hosts has relied on the post-mortem examination of the small intestine using the sedimentation and counting technique, with a recent shift toward non-invasive methods targeting fecal samples. However, host identification based solely on visual inspection of feces is often unreliable. Existing PCR-based methods are limited by com

Alveolar echinococcosis is a life-threatening zoonotic parasitic disease caused by infection of Echinococcus multilocularis larvae. To survive within the host's immune milieu, E. multilocularis has evolved sophisticated immune evasion strategies, including the expression of immunomodulatory proteins that regulate the host immune response. Our previous studies have demonstrated that E. multilocularis calreticulin (EmCRT) possessed strong binding ability to human complement component C1q to inhibit C1q-initiated complement activation and biological functions. To further elucidate the mechanism b

We report a case of postpartum alveolar echinococcosis in a zoo-housed gorilla in the Netherlands in 2024, with cerebral involvement causing neurologic symptoms. Infection was likely acquired via contaminated feed. This case highlights diagnostic challenges, public health risks, and the need for preventive feed hygiene and surveillance in endemic regions.

The first Korean case of Echinococcus multilocularis interpreted the probable origin of the isolate on the basis of cox1 sequence similarity, originally reporting 99.8%-99.9% similarity to Asian isolates and 99.5%-99.6% similarity to European isolates. To examine whether this similarity-based interpretation remains epidemiologically informative, we re-evaluated currently available cox1 sequences with high sequence identity at the accession level. Using AB780998.1 as the query, BLAST hits with ≥99.5% identity were collected, and 110 non-self accessions were manually annotated according to clade

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis is a lethal zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus multilocularis. The activation and subsequent evagination of protoscoleces (PSCs) in the host digestive tract are critical steps for establishing infection in definitive hosts, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood.
METHODS: In this study, we employed an in vitro PSC activation model combined with transcriptomic analysis to identify activation-associated genes. A novel gene, designated P158, was further characterized by transcriptional unit analysis and functional knock

Immunosuppression and extensive fibrosis around the lesions are important features of alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by E. multilocularis. Recent studies have suggested that TREM2 is involved in tumor immunosuppression and tissue fibrosis. However, the function and mechanism of TREM2 in AE remain to be determined. Here, TREM2 expression was assessed in human and mouse lesions by immunostaining. A variety of E. multilocularis infection models were established in wild-type and Trem2-/- mice. RNA sequencing, ATAC sequencing, and in vitro assays were conducted to explore the underlying roles

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a serious zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larvae of Echinococcus multilocularis. Given the limitations of current medications, there is an urgent necessity for the development of novel pharmacological treatments for AE. Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, exhibits both antibacterial and antiparasitic effects. This study aimed to investigate its effects on the viability of E. multilocularis larvae and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Ultrastructural changes were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Glucose assays, ROS as

Echinococcosis in pregnancy represents a complex clinical condition in terms of diagnosis and treatment with potential risk to both maternal and fetal health. There are limited clinical data on the nature and consequences of echinococcosis during pregnancy. This systematic review summarizes the current evidence on the clinical presentation, management, complications, and outcomes of echinococcosis during pregnancy. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases from 1990 to 2025 were queried. Sixty-seven articles met the inclusion criteria, and a total of 120 pregnant patients with echin

BACKGROUND: Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE), although rare, is a potentially life-threatening parasitic disease when left untreated. Following infection, the disease typically progresses through a prolonged asymptomatic latent phase, resulting in delayed clinical presentation in most patients. The radiological appearance of HAE may closely resemble that of primary hepatic malignancies, thereby creating significant diagnostic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 49-year-old previously healthy man who presented with cholestatic liver enzyme abnormalities and imaging find

Echinococcus multilocularis and Echinococcus canadensis (genotypes G8 and G10) are emerging parasites of concern across North America. Historically confined to northern and western regions, both species have been detected with increasing frequency in new geographic areas in wildlife, domestic dogs, and humans. Both Echinococcus spp have indirect life cycles involving carnivore definitive hosts (domestic and wild canids) and either herbivore intermediate hosts (for E canadensis) or rodents (for E multilocularis). For E multilocularis, domestic dogs can serve as both definitive hosts, shedding e

BACKGROUND: Hepatic echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease common in remote, resource-limited pastoral regions. It mainly appears as cystic echinococcosis (CE), due to Echinococcus granulosus, and alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by multilocular Echinococcus species. CE can lead to biliary colic or vascular compression, while AE often mimics liver cancer and exhibits high long-term mortality. Although ultrasonography is the diagnostic method of choice, its accuracy is affected by imaging artifacts and operator variability. Conventional deep learning models are often computationally

Long-term outcomes after hepatectomy for alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in immunosuppressed patients remain poorly investigated. This study evaluated recurrence rates and recurrence-free/overall survivals (RFS/OS) after AE resection in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. Consecutive patients operated for liver AE in two university hospitals were retrospectively collected (2000-2021). Immunosuppressed patients were defined as patients who had a reduced ability to fight infection due to certain diseases or treatments. 195 patients had hepatectomy for liver AE. Preoperative albendazole
