BENIGN FASCICULATION SYNDROME AMONG HEALTH CARE WORKERS, A SINGLE CENTER STUDY.

BACKGROUND: Benign fasciculation syndrome (BFS) is a neurological disease manifested as persistent muscle twitching with the absence of a serious underlying pathology. Unlike the fasciculations that characterizes the most serious condition like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the BFS is not associated with weakness or muscle atrophy. Although the exact underlying mechanism of BFS is not well understood, it seems that anxiety, depression and the fear from having ALS play an important role especially among health care workers. AIM: To detect the frequency and characteristics of BFS among a

Glial interactions in the formation and plasticity of the corpus callosum.

The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest interhemispheric commissure in the eutherian brain, enabling inter-hemispheric sensory integration and higher-order cognitive functions. Historically viewed through a neuron- and axon-centric lens, extensive research has established that glial cells (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia) are essential regulators of CC ontogenesis. Astrocytic guidepost cells sculpt midline architecture and secrete axonal guidance cues; oligodendrocytes drive callosal axonal maturation and myelination; and microglia regulate their fasciculation and pruning, myelinat

Chromatin remodeling protein CHD4 regulates axon guidance of spiral ganglion neurons in the developing cochlea.

Spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) are the primary afferent neurons that convey sound information from the cochlea, but the epigenetic changes that occur during development are unknown. We identified the chromodomain helicase binding protein 4 (CHD4) expression in SGNs. CHD4 is an ATP-dependent chromatin remodeler. We employed the Neurog1 (Ngn1) CreERT2 Chd4 conditional knockout animals to investigate Chd4 function in SGNs. SGNs are classified as type I and II neurons with different innervation patterns. SGNs lacking CHD4 showed abnormal fasciculation of type I neurons along with improper pathfind

An autopsy case of coexisting spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy and multiple system atrophy.

Here, we report an autopsy case of concurrent spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). A 55-year-old man presented with weakness, atrophy, and fasciculation of the tongue and the proximal parts of all limbs. The patient gradually developed severe orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention, and cerebellar ataxia; however, no parkinsonism was observed. The patient succumbed to sudden death during sleep. The autopsy revealed widespread and abundant α-synuclein-positive glial cytoplasmic inclusions in the central nervous system, indicative of MSA. Neuronal loss

Different patterns of fasciculation in spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a muscle ultrasonographic study.

BACKGROUND: The usefulness of muscle ultrasonography for detection of fasciculations has been increasingly recognised, particularly in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This study aimed to elucidate distributions and characteristics of fasciculations in spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) and to compare the results of those in ALS. METHODS: In 24 SBMA and 16 ALS patients, muscle ultrasonography was systematically performed in the tongue, upper limb muscles (biceps brachii, triceps brachii, first dorsal interosseous (FDI), abductor pollicis brevis and abductor digiti minimi), trunk mu

Do Immediate Implants Exhibit Deeper Vertical Positioning Than Delayed Implants? Radiographic Findings and Clinical Implications.

PURPOSE: This study aims to highlight the significance of implant timing in influencing the insertion depth of implants by measuring the insertion depth of immediate and delayed implants immediately after placement. METHODS: The study examined 76 dental implant cases, categorizing them into immediate (placed on the same day as extraction) with 41 cases and delayed (placed at least 2 months after extraction) with 35 cases, based on the timing relative to tooth extraction. The inclusion criteria included patients receiving bone-level implants in the maxilla or mandible with adjacent teeth, whil

Distinguishing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis from radiculopathy using machine learning to analyze nerve conduction data.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, fatal, and irreversible disease that shares some key clinical features with radiculopathy, including muscle atrophy, muscle cramps, and fasciculation. The aim of this study was to find a reliable method to differentiate these two diseases. Machine learning was used to discover new clinical biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of ALS from radiculopathy using nerve conduction study (NCS) data from patients. Data preparation and feature selection were performed by a random forest classifier algorithm, as well as a confusion matrix tool for model

Oculomotor axons use external and autocrine Slit signals for fasciculation, navigation, branching, and connectivity in mouse embryos.

BACKGROUND: Eye alignment and movements are controlled by three cranial nerves: the oculomotor (nIII), trochlear (nIV), and abducens nerves (nVI). Developmental errors of these nerves can lead to eye movement disorders. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms that guide motor axons to the eye remain poorly understood. METHODS: Oculomotor nerve guidance was examined in mutant mouse embryos for the secreted Slit proteins and Robo receptors. Methods included mapping Slit and Robo expression using Slit transgenic markers and Robo antibodies, imaging of oculomotor nerves and muscles using a

EPHRIN-A1 and -A2 act as positive growth factors for developing spiral ganglion radial bundles.

During the formation of the auditory system in mammals, spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) form ribbon-type synapses with hair cells in the cochlea to establish the first "sensorineural" component of sound transduction. Ahead of synapse formation in the cochlea, the SGNs undergo migration and extension with developing Schwann and otic mesenchyme cells to form radial bundles, fasciculated groups of nerve fibers found between the SGN somata and hair cells. Thus far, reports have shown that Eph/Ephrin signaling is important for the formation of radial bundles. Here, we show that EPHRIN-A1 and -A2 are

Median effective dose of rocuronium for the prevention of succinylcholine-induced fasciculation: an age-stratified study.

BACKGROUND: Succinylcholine, a commonly used depolarizing neuromuscular blocking relaxant, may produce fasciculation and postoperative myalgia as adverse effects. Although rocuronium pretreatment may attenuate this adverse effect, the median effective dose remains undetermined, as does the influence of age on it. This study was carried out to explore the median effective dose of pretreated rocuronium in inhibiting succinylcholine-induced fasciculation and to investigate the influence of age on the median effective dose of rocuronium. METHODS: Seventy-two adult participants undergoing elective

Successful treatment with refractory myasthenia gravis that developed after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: two case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder caused by autoantibodies that target the neuromuscular junction, leading to muscle weakness and fatigability. Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, confirmation of the presence of AChR-Ab, characteristic electromyography findings, and clinical improvement after administration of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.MG is often associated with thymoma and other autoimmune diseases, but it is rare following allo-HSCT. CASE REPORT: we reports two rare cases of MG after transplantation, including the first case of post-transplantati

Hemilingual tetany ("hemilingual spasm") in a dog.

Hemilingual atrophy, often secondary to lesions (e.g. neoplasia) affecting the hypoglossal nerve ipsilaterally, is the only unilateral tongue muscle-related neurological disorder reported in dogs. Hemilingual spasm is a descriptive term used in the human medical literature that refers to a disorder of involuntary, unilateral contractions in tongue musculature. We report a 5-year-old Border collie with hemilingual tetany ("hemilingual spasm"). Clinical examination revealed a resting unilateral contraction of the tongue on the right side with a resultant curvature of the tongue of variable degre

Tongue Surface Electromyography Detects Reduced Motor Unit Recruitment in Oropharyngeal Cancer Survivors With Hypoglossal Neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: This proof-of-concept case-control study examined the feasibility of tongue high-density surface electromyography (HDS-EMG) to detect hypoglossal neuropathy. METHODS: We analyzed tongue HDS-EMG for N = 2 participants. Subjects were graded through clinical tongue functional measures and gold-standard needle EMG. We collected HDS-EMG in three tongue tasks: relaxation, protrusion, and isometric maximum effort. The HDS-EMG was decomposed into motor unit spike train estimates. RESULTS: Muscle relaxation HDS-EMG contained spikes consistent with fasciculation potential morphology. Durin

Multiple System Atrophy (Cerebellar Type) With Overlapping Progressive Muscular Atrophy Features and Genetic Erb-B2 Receptor Tyrosine Kinase 4 (ERBB4) Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Variant: A Case Report.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive disease with Parkinsonism, dysautonomia, and cerebellar symptoms wherein patients can present with a broad range of confusing and overlapping findings attributable to various neuroanatomical substrates. Although possible, weakness is an unusual primary complaint, warranting further work-up for another neurodegenerative disease. The involvement of the more central structures, such as the locus coeruleus, pontine micturition center, and the cerebellum, can explain the wide range of symptoms. While Onuf's nucleus contributes to the urinary symptoms,
