Alveolar echinococcosis is a significant zoonotic disease characterized by infiltrative growth of metacestodes in intermediate hosts. It is primarily located in the liver and is associated with a high mortality rate if left untreated. To the authors' knowledge, the present report describes the first case of alveolar echinococcosis in a pregnant dog documented in the literature.A five-year-old, unneutered female Labrador Retriever was presented shortly after artificial insemination with abdominal distension, polydipsia, and polyuria. Further examinations led to the diagnosis of alveolar echinoc

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A and D are essential for the proper growth and development of a child. Due to the complex political circumstances in the state of Palestine, research on micronutrient deficiency is scarce.
METHODS: The Palestinian Ministry of Health (MOH) and UNICEF conducted a national cross-sectional survey in 2013 after the implementation of various micronutrient supplementation and fortification programs. Risk factors for levels of vitamin A (n = 1054) and vitamin D (n = 150) were assessed among children aged 6 to 59 months using chi-square tests and logistic regression with each of t

In this case report, a 36-year-old Eritrean man presented with polyuria, polydipsia, fatigue and 5 kg weight loss. HbA1c was 97 mmol/mol, proinsulin C-peptide 266 and glucose 19.2 mmol/l without ketoacidosis. Type 1 diabetes was diagnosed, and insulin was initiated. Abdominal CT showed splenomegaly, cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Liver biopsy and positive serology and PCR confirmed schistosomiasis. After three months, glycaemia normalised without insulin, C-peptide increased and autoantibodies were negative. The diagnosis was revised to type 2 diabetes/flatbush diabetes.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is closely associated with climate change and, in particular, with global warming. In addition to melting of ice and snow, rising sea level, and flooding of coastal areas, global warming is leading to a tropicalization of temperate marine ecosystems. Moreover, the effects of air pollution on airway and lung diseases are well documented as reported by the World Allergy Organization.
METHODS: Scientific literature was searched for studies investigating the effect of the interaction between air pollution and climate change on

Background: Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE) with anti-Ma2 antibodies is a rare immune-mediated disorder associated with testicular cancer, particularly in young males. While neurological manifestations are well documented, hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunctions remain underreported. We present a case of anti-Ma2 PLE associated with testicular cancer together with a systematic review of PLE associated with testicular cancer, selectively restricted to anti-Ma2 positive cases and focusing on hypothalamic-endocrine involvement. Case presentation: We describe a 21-year-old male diagnosed with

Urinary tract stones complicated by infection are relatively common, whereas renal abscess rupture complicated by paralytic ileus is extremely rare. On March 1, 2025, a 22-month-old boy was admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, Lhasa People's Hospital. He presented with secondary paralytic ileus resulting from renal abscess rupture secondary to nephrolithiasis. The patient was hospitalized with a 10-day history of cough, expectoration, abdominal pain and distension. Given severe abdominal distension and intestinal obstruction, emergency small bowel decompression and abdominal abscess drain

BACKGROUND: Retinal ischemia is a retinal disorder related to retinal vascular occlusion, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. The study aimed to evaluate the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of Chi-Ju-Di-Huang-Wan (CJDHW) against retinal ischemia in rats.
METHODS: High intraocular pressure (HIOP)-induced retinal ischemia was established in Wistar rats by raising their intraocular pressure to 120 mmHg for 60 min with in an eye whose anterior chamber was cannulated with a 30-guage needle adapted to a normal saline bottle through an intravenous line.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Compared to healthy controls, adult patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are anemic, and therefore have higher cardiac output and Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) to maintain brain oxygenation. They also demonstrate comparatively more cognitive deficits due to either overt strokes or silent cerebral ischemia. However, there are few correlative studies between CBF and cognitive deficits, specifically processing speed in SCD. Such studies are important to develop biomarkers of central brain processing and ischemia for diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluating the effectiveness of

CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old pregnant Golden Retriever bitch was presented 52 days after ovulation for nausea, hyporexia, regurgitation, polyuria, and polydipsia. Reproductive ultrasound demonstrated several viable foetuses, and the bitch was treated conservatively. Two days later, the bitch was hospitalized due to continued hyporexia, vomiting, abdominal distention, and an acute onset of haematochezia. Blood work showed regenerative mild anaemia and neutrophilia with a left shift, metabolic acidosis, hypocalcaemia, hyponatremia, hypochloraemia, hyperkalaemia, and Na:K ratio of 24:1, raisin

Background and Clinical Significance: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is a widely prescribed nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI) for HIV-1 infection. Though generally well-tolerated, proximal renal tubulopathy resulting in full-blown Fanconi syndrome remains a rare but severe complication (<0.1%). Case Presentation: We present the case of a 52-year-old female living with HIV-1 (diagnosed in 1999, CDC stage A3) who had been treated with a TDF-based antiretroviral regimen for 12 years. Upon admission, she complained of progressive bone pain and polyuria over the preceding six

CASE SUMMARY: A 13-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat was referred for weight loss, polyphagia, polyuria, polydipsia and intermittent vomiting. Blood work demonstrated diabetes mellitus; abdominal ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic, thickened pancreas with two large fluid-filled cavities within the body and right limb. Cytology of the aspirated fluid indicated suppurative inflammation with bacterial infection, which cultured Pasteurella multocida. Medical management for diabetes mellitus and pancreatic abscessation was initiated. After approximately 4 months of antimicrobial th

PLAIN ENGLISH SUMMARY: Outcome domains are aspects of a condition that matter to patients and clinicians and can be measured to assess treatment effects. For tinnitus, examples include 'tinnitus loudness' and 'ability to concentrate'. This study focuses on the first stage of agreeing which outcome domains should be measured in all clinical trials of tinnitus. Crucially, it involves identifying outcome domains, prior to a voting process. This article describes how we effectively involved patients in that study design process, and reflects on the impact of their input. The study first compiled a

In recent years, the incidence of leptospirosis in Ukraine has been increasing because of a number of factors, such as climate change and the ongoing war. The aim of this case report is to present a case of challenging leptospirosis diagnosis in a serviceman. A 38-year-old male, although in a combat zone, repeatedly noted the presence of mice in his deployment locations. He experienced an acute onset of illness with fever, muscle pain, and pronounced general weakness. He self-administered an antibiotic. Subsequently, he developed a cough and shortness of breath upon exertion. He was hospitaliz

BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is an ultra-rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis driven by clonal proliferation of lipid-laden histiocytes. With fewer than a thousand documented cases globally, it remains largely unreported in South Asia.
CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old male presented with chronic leg pain, polyuria, and visual disturbances. Radiologic findings revealed symmetric osteosclerosis of long bones and absent pituitary shadow with thickened stalk of pituitary gland. Histopathology showed foamy histiocytes positive for CD68 and CD163 but negative for CD1a and Langerin. Detect

INTRODUCTION: Granular cell tumors of the neurohypophysis are rare, benign neoplasms originating from pituicytes that often pose diagnostic challenges due to their resemblance to other sellar lesions.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 26-year-old man with a 2-year history of headache, polyuria, and hypopituitarism. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 21 × 23×30 mm suprasellar mass compressing the optic chiasm and hypothalamus. Hormonal evaluation showed hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, central hypothyroidism, and arginine vasopressin deficiency. The patient underwent partial tumor re

BACKGROUND: Acute Q fever caused by Coxiella burnetii is often missed because clinical manifestations are nonspecific, routine cultures are unrevealing, and typical zoonotic exposure may be absent. Persistent fever after correction of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) should prompt reassessment for atypical or intracellular pathogens.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus was admitted with polyuria, polydipsia, and DKA but was afebrile and had no obvious infectious symptoms on admission. Metabolic acidosis resolved within 24 hours, but persistent high-grade fever subseq

Tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) is an important cause of renal tubular dysfunction in children but may be misdiagnosed as urinary tract infection (UTI) because of non-specific urinary manifestations. Autoimmune-associated TIN is particularly challenging when overlapping autoimmune features are present. Here, we report a pediatric case of TIN with an autoimmune-associated phenotype initially presenting as recurrent culture-negative urinary symptoms suggestive of UTI. A 5-year-old boy presented with recurrent urinary frequency, persistent pyuria, and negative urine cultures. Renal ultrasonogr

BACKGROUND: Use of the ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists (cabergoline and pergolide) is associated with an increased risk of cardiac valvulopathy. Pergolide was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 because of the risk of valvular heart disease, while the European Medicines Agency (EMA) required a reduction in the maximum daily dosage of cabergoline and pergolide from 6 mg/day to 3 mg/day in 2008. In Japan, the package inserts of both drugs were revised in April 2007 to request that physicians conduct periodic ultrasonic cardiography (UCG) examinations for patients taking cabergoline or

BACKGROUND: Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a rare autosomal dominant disorder predisposing individuals to multisystem neoplasms. While pheochromocytoma is a well-recognized endocrine manifestation of VHL, pancreatic involvement leading to clinically significant endocrine dysfunction is less frequently emphasized. We report a case of VHL syndrome in which diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) occurred in the context of underlying pancreatic pathology, highlighting a potential but underexplored metabolic complication in these patients.

Part I of this article discussed the potential functional importance of genetic mutations and alleles of the human cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) gene. The impact of CYP2D6 polymorphisms on the clearance of and response to a series of cardiovascular drugs was addressed. Since CYP2D6 plays a major role in the metabolism of a large number of other drugs, Part II of the article highlights the impact of CYP2D6 polymorphisms on the response to other groups of clinically used drugs. Although clinical studies have observed a gene-dose effect for some tricyclic antidepressants, it is difficult to establ
