How hostile attribution bias affects attachment anxiety/avoidance and relationship satisfaction: a cross-cultural perspective during the COVID pandemic.

This is the first cross-cultural study of the contribution of romantic hostile attribution bias to relationship satisfaction that takes into account the role of attachment orientation. In two studies conducted 1 year apart, data were collected in three countries during COVID (Western culture country-the United Kingdom, Eastern culture country-China, geographically distinct country-New Zealand). Both studies indicated that hostile attribution bias (a) was positively related to attachment anxiety/avoidance cross-culturally, (b) played a mediating role between attachment anxiety/avoidance and rel

The Longitudinal Associations Between Hostile Automatic Thoughts, Moral Disengagement, and Aggression: A Cross-Lagged Study.

Numerous studies have clearly identified that cognitive and moral factors are important predictors of aggression, but the longitudinal interaction between hostile automatic thoughts (HAT), moral disengagement (MD) and aggression has not been sufficiently explored. Based on the General Aggression Model (GAM) and script theory, this study proposes that HAT and MD may form a cognitive-moral system that is associated with aggression over time. Using a two-wave longitudinal research design with an interval of 6 months, we obtained data from 941 Chinese college students. Cross-lagged analyzes reveal

EEG microstate alterations in psychotic depression: prolonged microstate C duration and associations with psychotic symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder with psychotic features (MDD-Psy) represents a severe clinical subtype with distinct psychopathology, yet its underlying large-scale brain network dynamics, as measured by resting-state EEG microstates, remain poorly characterized. METHODS: We compared 68 patients with MDD-Psy and 63 patients with MDD without psychotic features (MDD-NonPsy). Clinical assessment included the Kangduo Antidepressant Scale (KDAS) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). Resting-state EEG microstate parameters (duration, time coverage, occurrence, and transition probabil

Psychometric structure and score interpretation of the SCL-90 among Chinese first-year undergraduates: an analysis of an open dataset.

INTRODUCTION: The Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) provides total and domain scores whose shared and distinct information remains debated. METHODS: We analyzed an open dataset of 14,371 Chinese first-year undergraduates in calibration and validation halves. Four item-level structures (unidimensional, nine correlated factors, second-order, and orthogonal bifactor) were compared on the same 83 domain-scored items using robust maximum likelihood (MLR) in both halves and mean- and variance-adjusted weighted least squares (WLSMV) for ordered items in validation. A separate single-factor model include

Comparison of Neurophysiological Characteristics Using Heart Rate Variability Between Patients With Korean Hwa-byung and Healthy Individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Hwa-byung (HB) is a syndrome associated with stressful events within Korea's social and cultural contexts. The clinical symptoms of HB may be associated with autonomic imbalance. This study investigated the neurophysiological characteristics of HB by comparing heart rate variability (HRV) between patients with HB and healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: This study included 67 patients with HB and 72 HCs. We used psychological assessments, including trauma, life events, anger, and affective symptoms, along with the Hwa-Byung Scale (HBS). Neurophysiological data were evaluated by measuri

Suicidal Behaviour and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Adolescents With Childhood Sexual Abuse: Associated Clinical Factors and Psychological Correlates.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse is a major developmental trauma associated with elevated risk for non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal behaviour in adolescence. Yet, it remains unclear whether abused adolescents show distinct motivational profiles for self-injury and how depression and emotion dysregulation jointly relate to suicide risk. AIMS: To compare suicide risk, depressive severity, and emotion dysregulation across adolescents with childhood sexual abuse and self-injury, adolescents with self-injury without sexual abuse, and controls; to identify unique predictors of suicide risk;

Schema Therapy for Voice Hearers: A Case Series Study.

Distressing voice-hearing experiences are frequently characterised by hostility, criticism and abuse and emerging evidence suggests that these experiences may reflect internalised dysfunctional schema modes, particularly the Punitive Parent mode. Yet no research has evaluated a schema therapy intervention explicitly targeting schema modes. This naturalistic case series evaluated schema therapy for voices (STv) within a routine specialist psychology service. Twenty transdiagnostic voice hearers started formulation-driven STv comprising approximately 20-30 individual sessions integrating chair-w

From lack of assertiveness to depression: A co-twin control study of hostility and social support across 23 years.

BACKGROUND: Although lack of assertiveness (LOA) and hostility are established risk factors for depression, the mechanisms linking them to depression and their genetic or environmental contributions remain unclear. We used the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging (SATSA) to test whether social support (SS) deficits mediated these pathways. METHODS: Community-dwelling twins (N = 2,034; 1,017 pairs) were followed for up to 23 years (1984-2007). We examined serial (LOA → hostility → SS → depression) and parallel (LOA + hostility → SS → depression) mediation models. Within-pair difference analyse

The neural architecture of social threat: A meta-analytic comparison of indirect and direct social threat.

Indirect and Direct Social Threat (IST and DST) are related but partially distinct forms of interpersonal adversity defined along two dimensions: threat perception, the explicitness and salience of harm, and behavioural reciprocity, the extent of bidirectional contingency and response opportunity. IST involves ambiguous or socially devaluing contexts with limited reciprocity, whereas DST entails overt hostility, clear antagonism, and reciprocal engagement. This distinction shows conceptual parallels with findings from rodent models of social interaction. We tested this framework using a coordi

Effects of an 8-week self-compassion-based mental preparation program on mood states and 3,000 m performance in cadet cross-country athletes.

BACKGROUND: Mental preparation is increasingly recognized as a key factor in optimizing both psychological and physical performance in athletes; however, its specific effects on mood states and endurance performance in cross-country runners remain insufficiently investigated. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of an 8-week mental preparation program on mood states and 3,000 m performance in cross-country athletes compared with a control group, with a specific focus on self-compassion-based training. METHODS: Thirty-two male cross-country athletes (16 ± years old; 3-5 years of experie

Access to general practice appointments and sustainable change: a focused ethnographic case study.

BACKGROUND: Access to an appointment with a GP is important to patients, but hard to achieve in modern general practice, with general practice delivering more consultations than ever before. Research has focused on discrete systems for managing access in general practice, for example, telephone prioritisation, and these have been demonstrated to be variably successful in managing demand. AIM: To examine the sustainability of previous attempts to improve access to GP appointments to understand if access systems previously deployed have been adapted, abandoned, or sustained. DESIGN AND SETTING

The Relationship Between Alexithymia, Impulsivity, and Aggression in Mixed Martial Arts Athletes.

This study investigated the relationships among alexithymia, impulsivity, and aggression in mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes. Participants (N = 60, 51 men, and 9 women) were recruited from MMA clubs and training centers in Lebanon. They completed self-report measures including the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20) to assess alexithymia, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) to measure impulsivity, and the Buss-Perry Aggression Scale short form (BPAS-SF) to evaluate aggression tendencies. Results indicated that alexithymia was positively correlated with impulsivity (attentional, r = 0.4

Pathways to honesty: Exploring the ecological desistance of atypical lying features.

Atypical lying (i.e., dishonesty that is excessive, impulsive, for fun, or lacks clear motive) may signal broader developmental risks. This study examined whether baseline levels and changes in parenting, peer, and individual factors were associated with trajectories of atypical lying from ages 14 to 26. Data from 1354 participants (86.41% male; baseline Mage = 16.04; 41.5% Black, 33.5% Hispanic, 20.2% White, 4.8% Other) in the Pathways to Desistance study were analyzed. Results indicate that higher risk (parental hostility, antisocial peer influence, and perceived thrill of crime) and lower p

Explaining the Link Between PTSD and Suicide: A Meta-Analysis to Introduce the CEASE Framework.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is a well-known risk-factor for suicidal ideation and attempts, but there have been few attempts to systematically evaluate correlates of this association. Using purported mechanisms of the development of suicidal thoughts and behaviors across nine theories as a guide, a series of meta-analyses (K = 191 studies, N = 79,106) were conducted. Posttraumatic stress disorder had a moderate association with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Defeat and entrapment had large associations with both posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Hopelessnes

Partisan Animosity as Blame: A Unifying and Generative Framework for Understanding and Transforming Affective Polarization in the Political Sphere.

Academic AbstractPartisan animosity is on the rise in many nations around the globe. Given its significant implications, it is imperative to establish a clear conceptualization of partisan animosity that can aid efforts to reduce it. To address this need, we present a novel framework that conceptualizes partisan animosity as an attitude of blame directed toward political outgroups. Drawing from the literature on moral psychology, we construct a comprehensive model of the psychology of blame. Then, we use that model as an interpretive lens to understand existing interventions that have reduced

Dysphoria in contemporary psychiatry: forgotten affective state in need of diagnostic recognition.

BACKGROUND: Dysphoria - characterised by irritable tension, pervasive discontent and aversive emotionality - is a clinically significant yet nosologically ambiguous phenomenon. It remains marginalised in major diagnostic systems (DSM-5-TR, ICD-11), relegated to a symptomatic descriptor rather than a validated entity, perpetuating diagnostic imprecision and therapeutic risks. AIMS: This review argues for the formal recognition of dysphoria as a distinct transdiagnostic affective dimension. It synthesises evidence to demonstrate its neurobehavioural correlates, protean manifestations across dis

Mother-Adolescent Discrepancies in Reports of Relationship Quality and Early Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms.

This 3-wave longitudinal study examined the bidirectional associations between adolescents' and mothers' perceptions of the mother-adolescent relationship quality (i.e., warmth and hostility) and internalizing symptoms (i.e., depressive symptoms and loneliness). The focus was on the direction of effects between internalizing symptoms and both the levels of and discrepancies in mothers' and adolescents' perceptions of mother-adolescent relationship quality and potential differential associations with depressive symptoms and loneliness over time. A total of 622 early adolescents (55% girls, Mage

The Psychometric Properties of the Religious Suicide Stigma Measure: A Study of Religious Congregants and Faith Leaders in the USA.

Suicide stigma is a pervasive barrier to suicide prevention efforts. Although several suicide stigma measures are available, a suicide stigma assessment tool that is specific to religious communities has yet to be created. This research was conducted to evaluate the psychometric properties of a scale that measures religiously themed suicide stigma. The sample consisted of 378 adult participants from across the USA who attend a religious community, with over 40% of the sample identifying as "faith leaders." The Religious Suicide Stigma Measure (RSSM) items were conceptualized based on statement

Is the Cognitive Remediation of Social Cognition (RC2S) program useful to improve social cognition and functional outcomes in people with schizophrenia? A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Difficulties in social interactions are a core characteristic of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. They are often linked to impairments in social cognition, including emotion recognition, social perception, theory of mind, and attributional style. The RC2S program (cognitive remediation of social cognition) aims to address these deficits through individualized interventions. This study is the first controlled randomized trial to compare RC2S with RECOS (Remédiation Cognitive pour la Schizophrénie ou un trouble associé), a neurocognitive remediation program, to evaluate their respect
