BACKGROUND Management of posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies is challenging, requiring the preservation of ocular integrity and restoring vision. Traumatic endophthalmitis occurs in 7% to 13% of penetrating injuries, particularly with coexisting intraocular foreign bodies. Managing posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies poses significant challenges due to their complex clinical presentation and the need to achieve multiple goals during treatment. This unusual case of a large metallic intraocular foreign body associated with traumatic cataract, retinal detachment, and endophthalm

The surgical challenge of intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) in the posterior pole is compounded by the fact that posterior scleral perforations are often not anticipated preoperatively. We describe a novel, simplified rescue technique using an autologous blood clot to seal a traumatic posterior scleral defect. A 34-year-old male presented with a gunshot injury and a radiopaque IOFB embedded in the posterior sclera. Following pars plana vitrectomy and IOFB removal, a posterior scleral defect was identified. An autologous blood clot was placed over the defect intraoperatively under air to act a

BACKGROUND/AIMS: On 17 September 2024, over 3000 pager devices containing explosives were remotely detonated across Lebanon in a coordinated mass-casualty event, causing unprecedented ocular trauma. This study aims to characterise the nature and extent of ophthalmic injuries treated at a tertiary care centre following this unique attack.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of patients presenting to the American University of Beirut Medical Centre on the day of the explosion. Only patients who underwent ophthalmic surgical exploration were included. Data were collected from cli

Periocular injuries secondary to animal scratches in children can be dangerous and associated with high morbidity. We present a case of a delayed extrusion of a cat claw from the caruncle of a pediatric patient 11 days after the initial injury. The patient was seen immediately after the injury in the emergency department, when no foreign bodies were noted. He returned to the same emergency department after partial spontaneous extrusion. The claw was removed by the ophthalmology service.

The choice between one-stage (removal during primary repair) and two-stage (delayed removal) surgical repair for intraocular foreign body injury is often based on injury characteristics, institutional capabilities, and surgeon expertise. This study aims to compare vision outcomes and complication incidence after one-stage (n = 70) and two-stage (n = 40) intraocular foreign body removal and surgical repair across multiple academic centers. We retrospectively reviewed 110 patients treated between 2000 and 2021 at four academic centers in the southeastern United States and stratified patients by

BACKGROUND: Impaction of foreign bodies within the paranasal sinuses secondary to slingshot projectiles is uncommon, with only three documented case reports within the literature. There are no clear guidelines for the management of these injuries, and given the heterogeneity of their presentations, various methods of foreign body extraction have been employed, ranging from enucleation of the affected eye to transnasal endoscopic approaches.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes the presentation and successful management of a 36-year-old male with a ruptured left globe and no perceptio

A unique region of human parvovirus B19 virus‑VP1 (B19V‑VP1u) has been linked to a variety of cardiac disorders. However, the precise role of B19V‑VP1u in inducing cardiac injury remains unknown. The present study investigated the effects of B19V‑VP1u and different regions of B19V‑VP1u, including B19V‑VP1uA (residues 1‑60), B19V‑VP1uB (residues 61‑129), B19V‑VP1uC (residues 130‑195) and B19V‑VP1uD (residues 196‑227), on inducing cardiac injury in naïve mice by zymography, immunoblotting, H&E staining and cytokine immunoassay. We report the case of a woman in her 40s who sustained a left transorbital penetrating injury caused by an accidentally discharged nail from a nail gun. On presentation, visual function was preserved despite visible medial canthal penetration. CT demonstrated a medial extraconal trajectory, adjacent to the medial rectus muscle, traversing the ethmoidal air cells and approaching the sphenoid sinus without intracranial involvement or optic nerve damage. Multidisciplinary management involving ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology enabled controlled external extraction of the foreign body. A hook-

Intraorbital foreign bodies (IOFBs) represent significant challenges in ocular trauma management, particularly when complete burial occurs. We present a male in his 50s who sustained a high-velocity ocular injury by a completely buried IOFB consisting of an electric cutter blade fragment. Despite wearing protective eyewear, the 34×11 mm fragment entered through the nasal root and became embedded in the frontal process of the zygomatic bone. Preoperative cerebral angiography confirmed the absence of ophthalmic artery injury. A lateral orbitotomy approach using Berke canthotomy and controlled os

PURPOSE: The Foldable Capsular Vitreous Bag (FCVB) implant is useful in maintaining an ocular structure in cases of chronic hypotony secondary to trauma or repeated surgery. There are a few published reports of long-term outcomes and no indication of the chronic cellular changes of the adjacent tissues associated with FCVB implantation. We describe one of the few FCVB cases in the United Kingdom and present histological findings associated with it following secondary enucleation.

This case study describes the rehabilitation efforts of a 25-year-old male reserve officer who sustained a penetrating intraocular metallic foreign body (IOFB) injury to his right eye during a military conflict. Penetrating ocular trauma can lead to severe tissue deformities, scarring, permanent visual impairment, and long-term complications like intraocular infection and ocular hypotension. The patient's initial presentation revealed vision loss, pain, irritation, a foreign body sensation, and discomfort in the right eye. Diagnostic imaging confirmed a severe globe rupture, including the pres
