Control and elimination of the parasite Ascaris lumbricoides relies on mass drug administration (MDA) using a limited number of anti-helminthics. Whilst these programs have reduced the infection intensity and prevalence within many endemic regions, patterns of transmission remain poorly understood. Reinfection commonly occurs following cessation of treatment due to the absence of acquired immunity post infection. Here, we utilise genomic data to understand parasite transmission within and between households in a community and the genomic impact of repeated MDA. We sequenced 54 whole-genomes fr

BACKGROUND: Pediatric abdominal pain is a common yet diagnostically challenging symptom, particularly in young children who struggle to articulate their discomfort. With obesity increasingly affecting ultrasound accuracy, this study aimed to find the cause of pediatric abdominal pain by seeking new approaches and methods in ultrasound examination, especially in the application among obese or overweight pediatric patients.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on pediatric patients hospitalized between July 2016 and November 2017 for abdominal pain. Patients were categorized into nor

Over one billion people worldwide are affected by Ascaris lumbricoides. While ascariasis is rare in Saudi Arabia, it is occasionally encountered among expatriates from endemic regions. We report a case of biliary ascariasis in a 29-year-old female expatriate, highlighting the clinical, laboratory, radiological, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) findings, with particular emphasis on the diagnostic role of imaging. The patient presented to the emergency department with right upper quadrant abdominal pain, although physical examination was unremarkable. Abdominal ultrasoun

Appendicitis commonly causes abdominal surgical emergencies, occurring with an incidence of 7%-14%. In tropical regions where it is endemic, ascariasis ranks as the most prevalent helminth infection. Intestinal helminths move through the digestive system and can block the appendix lumen, resulting in appendicitis due to luminal obstruction. In this case, we present an 8-year-old female who experienced periumbilical pain that shifted to the right lower abdomen over 3 days. She also vomited and lost her appetite. An abdominal ultrasound confirmed appendicitis, but the ultrasound did not visualiz

Intestinal Parasitic Infections (IPIs) are prevalent in vulnerable populations, yet zoonotic transmission is underreported. This study analyzed, under the One Health approach, the prevalence of and risk factors for IPIs among humans and dogs in a rural region of Teresina, Piauí, Brazil. A total of 361 human fecal samples, 23 household dog fecal samples and 81 dog fecal samples collected from public roads were analyzed using the Lutz, Baermann and Kato-Katz methods. Anthropometric measurements, haemoglobin levels in children aged 5 to 14 and a survey of cases of cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) we

The most frequent human intestinal nematode is Ascaris lumbricoides. Ascariasis is one of the most prevalent intestinal illnesses in underdeveloped nations, including Afghanistan. It affects over 25% of the world's population and causes about 20 000 fatalities annually due to its unfavorable clinical course. In endemic locations, 50%-60% of pediatric admissions to surgical emergency rooms are caused by A. lumbricoides. Due to the cystic duct's narrowness and tortuousness, migration of the worm to the gallbladder is less common than migration to the bile duct. When it does, acalculous cholecyst

OBJECTIVES: The old friends hypothesis (OFH) examines connections between the global increase in immunoregulatory diseases (e.g., allergy and autoimmunity) and reduced exposure to immune-priming symbionts like soil-transmitted helminths. Helminth species, however, vary in their effects on hosts and should be considered separately. We examined relationships between species-specific helminth infection and circulating biomarkers of adaptive immune antibodies (total immunoglobulin E [IgE]), systemic inflammation (C-reactive protein [CRP]), and immune regulation (interleukin-6 [IL-6]), among Indige

Ascariasis (roundworm) is the most prevalent parasitic nematode infection worldwide, impacting approximately 500 million people predominantly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While people of all ages are infected with Ascaris, infection intensity (defined by worm burden) paradoxically peaks in pre-school and school-aged children but then declines with age. The cause of age-dependent Ascaris worm intensity is not well understood but may be dependent on cellular changes in mucosal barrier sites. We have previously found that the gastric mucosa is a critical barrier site for Ascaris i

PURPOSE: Soil-transmitted helminth infections affect people who live in areas with poor sanitation and low socioeconomic levels. Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most frequent parasites worldwide and in México. The General Directorate of Epidemiology reports data related to infections weekly, and this study was based on that. The aim of this study was to analyze the SINAVE data for twenty years (2003-2022) to assess the incidence of ascariasis in the United Mexican States.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational analysis of ascariasis from January 2003 to December 2022, classify

This study employed Bayesian latent class analyses to estimate the diagnostic accuracy of faecal egg count (FEC), milk spot detection and the ELISA for detection of Ascaris suum using matched samples from individual pigs in Australia. A total of 251 blood, faecal and liver samples were collected from finisher pigs from four Victorian pig farms. Matched samples (n = 189) were used to compare the three diagnostic tests. The ELISA detected a higher proportion of positive samples (56 %; 95 % CI 48-62 %) compared to milk spot detection (42 %; 95 % CI 35-49 %) and FEC (17 %; 95 % CI 12-23 %). Only t

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis is a parasitic infection caused by Ascaris lumbricoides and infects over 1.2 billion people worldwide. Benzimidazole (BZ) drugs remain the standard treatment in large-scale deworming programs globally. The prevalence of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in the β-tubulin gene of A. lumbricoides (F200Y, E198A and F167Y) is increasing due to the widespread use of BZ drugs.
AIM: To investigate the prevalence of the above-mentioned SNPs in a South African adult population.
METHODS: This was a sub-study of the main cross-sectional study with participants (n = 414) who h

BACKGROUND: Two species of Ascaris nematodes infect humans: Ascaris lumbricoides, a human parasite, and Ascaris suum, which primarily infects pigs. Since these species are morphologically similar, molecular techniques are necessary for species identification in human Ascaris cases. A common method involves analyzing nucleotide sequences in the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) region, particularly at positions 133 and 246. Although Ascaris nematodes have also been detected in wild boars, they are often classified as A. suum without molecular analysis due to their genetic similarity to pigs

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ascariasis is a prevalent parasitic disease in tropical regions, but migration of Ascaris lumbricoides into the gallbladder is an exceptionally rare occurrence due to the anatomical narrowness of the cystic duct. Recognizing such unusual presentations is vital in endemic regions, particularly in patients presenting with symptoms of acalculous cholecystitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old female presented with right upper quadrant pain and low-grade fever. Ultrasonography revealed a mobile echogenic structure within the gallbladder, suggestive of Ascaris lumbrico

Wumei Pills, a classic traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) formula, are widely used in the treatment of biliary ascariasis and diarrhea. In recent years, studies have shown that Wumei Pills have advantages in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM), while there are no relevant reports that systematically evaluate the efficacy of Wumei Pills in the treatment of T2DM. This study addresses this issue by systematically evaluating the efficacy and safety of Wumei Pills, aiming to provide an evidence-based basis for clinical practice. Ascariasis (round worm) is the largest worm of the common nematodes that infect humans and causes the disease ascariasis. It is most common in tropical and subtropical countries where poor sanitation and illiteracy prevail. Most patients with the disease are asymptomatic; however significant morbidity can arise from the migration of the worm from the small bowel to ectopic sites causing complications. One of the complications is biliary system infestation where the worm travels to the biliary tract.Presentation of symptoms can range from biliary colic to more complicated symptoms such as acute

Background: Fructus Meliae Toosendan (FMT) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat ascariasis; however, its reported hepatotoxicity limits its application. Toosendanin (TSN), as a principal active component, is recognized as the primary toxic ingredient responsible for FMT-induced hepatotoxicity, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Methods: HepG2 cells were treated with TSN and analyzed using Western blotting and qPCR assays for related gene transcription and protein expression. Lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis markers were measured. Balb/c and C57BL/6 mice received various
