Smartphone-assisted dual-mode cyanide ion sensing in environmental and biological matrices using a triphenylamine-quinoline-conjugated chromogenic receptor.

This work presents the efficient recognition of the hazardous chemical cyanide ions (CN- ions) using a newly designed organic molecule-based fluorescent receptor, (E)-4-(4-(diphenylamino)styryl)-1-propylquinolin-1-ium (TAME). CN- ion detection occurs via nucleophilic addition to the styryl group, inducing distinct electronic perturbations as well as blocking of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. Absorption spectral titration studies reveal a notable blue shift (517-507 nm) in the presence of CN- ions, while steady-state fluorescence measurements demonstrate significant fluoresce

Portable cyanide monitoring using a benzothiazolium-based ratiometric fluorescent probe coupled with smartphone imaging, test strips, and living cell imaging.

Real-time monitoring of highly toxic cyanide (CN-) using low-cost and visually detectable fluorescent probes is essential for minimizing its environmental and biological hazards. Herein, a novel benzothiazolium-based donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) fluorescent probe (MBT) was developed for the sensitive and selective detection of CN-. MBT exhibited high sensitivity, rapid response (∼2.0 min), excellent selectivity, a low detection limit (0.162 μM), broad pH applicability, and strong anti-interference capability. Owing to these favorable sensing characteristics, MBT was successfully applied to the qua

Diiron(I) Complexes with Promising Anticancer Properties Obtained by CO-To-Isocyanide Substitution of [Fe2Cp2(CO)4].

The diiron(I) complexes [Fe2Cp2(CNR)3{CN(Me) (R)}][CF3SO3] ([2a-b][CF3SO3], R = Xyl, Cy; Xyl = 2,6-C6H3Me2, Cy = cyclohexyl) and [Fe2Cp2(CNR)2{CN(Me) (R)}2][CF3SO3]2 ([3a-c][CF3SO3]2, R = Xyl, Cy, Me) were synthesized in moderate-to-high yields from [Fe2Cp2(CO)4]. They were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction in five representative cases. The electrochemical behavior of [2a][CF3SO3] and [3a][CF3SO3]2 was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and IR-spectroelectrochemistry, assisted by DFT calculations. UV-vis and 1H NMR studies showed ≥84% of each complex

Reactivity-Guided Detection Strategies for Isocyanide Natural Products Reveal Acid-Induced Hazimycin Artifacts.

Isocyanides are unusual functional groups with important roles in synthetic chemistry, chemical biology, and natural product bioactivity, but their detection in complex biological samples remains challenging. Here, we developed complementary HPLC-MS- and fluorescence-based strategies for identifying isocyanide-containing compounds. Label-free MS/MS analysis revealed diagnostic features for selected isocyanides, including [CN]- reporter ions and HCN neutral losses, while deliberate mild acid treatment converted isocyanides to formamides that could be detected through [CH2NO]- reporter ions and

Development and internal validation of the NOTICE assessment as a non-biological measure of prenatal nicotine, tobacco, and cannabis use and exposure.

OBJECTIVES: Accurate measurement of tobacco, nicotine and cannabis use and exposure during pregnancy is essential for research and clinical care, yet existing perinatal surveillance relies on simplified self-report that inadequately captures exposure patterns. Biological assays provide objective measurement but are invasive, costly, limited to short detection windows, and impractical for repeated or population-level use. This study aimed to develop and internally validate the Nicotine, Tobacco and Cannabis Use and Exposure (NOTICE) assessment as a low-burden, non-biological behavioural tool fo

Future Treatments for Tobacco Dependence.

Scientific evidence supports that the combination of psychological counseling and pharmacological treatment is the most effective healthcare intervention to help smokers quit. Four types of medications have been shown to be safe and effective: nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion, varenicline, and cytisinicline. Nevertheless, based on the results of new studies, we can point out several opportunities for development clinical research in this field: (a) finding the most effective doses for cytisinicline, (b) finding the effectiveness and safety of cytisinicline in smokers with chronic

Heated Tobacco Product Awareness and Use Among Young Adult Texas College Students During a Period of Renewed Market Activity, 2025-2026.

Little is known about heated tobacco product (HTP; e.g., IQOS) use among young adults following IQOS reentry to the US market, initially centered in Austin, Texas. We examined HTP awareness and use among Texas college students during renewed market activity. Repeated cross-sectional surveys included 17,750 participants (18-29y) attending 19 Texas colleges in 2025 and 2026. Mixed-effects logistic regression models examined changes in HTP awareness and use by survey year, campus location (Austin vs. non-Austin), and demographic, tobacco use, and cessation correlates. Overall, 14.8% reported HTP

Secondhand smoke exposure and current tobacco and/or nicotine use among adolescents in Kenya and Nigeria: a survey-weighted inverse probability weighting analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is associated with adolescent tobacco and nicotine use but nationally representative evidence from sub-Saharan Africa is limited. We examined this association among adolescents in Kenya and Nigeria using survey-weighted inverse probability weighting. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from the 2024 Data on Youth Tobacco in Africa household survey of adolescents aged 10-17 years in Kenya (n=6435) and Nigeria (n=7502). SHS exposure was self-reported. Current use of any tobacco and/or nicotine product was self-reported past-30-day use of cigar

Abolition by design: implementing the dismantling of the commercial tobacco and nicotine industry.

The commercial tobacco and nicotine industry continues to drive preventable disease and death globally. Despite progress in tobacco control, industry power, product diversification, market expansion, and policy interference have constrained the impact of incremental regulatory approaches. Downstream interventions, such as cessation supports and lung cancer screening, remain essential but respond to accumulated harms rather than preventing exposure at its source. This paper presents an implementation framework that positions abolition as a staged, governable, and legally supported public health

Sequential removal of cyanide and phenol using zerovalent iron and Rhodococcus pyridinivorans PDB9T NS-1 encapsulated in a freeze-dried Ba-alginate nano-biohybrid system.

Phenolic compounds and cyanides are the major pollutants in coke-oven wastewater, posing serious human health hazards and ecosystem damage. Although the microbial biodegradation of phenolic pollutants is an eco-friendly and efficient technique, even very low cyanide concentrations inhibit the growth of phenol-degrading microorganisms. Furthermore, below pH 10, cyanide is converted into HCN gas (pK a = 9.2). Therefore, cyanide treatment requires a pH greater than 10; however, microbial growth is not possible at such a high pH. Thus, in the present study, a sequential nano-microbial system of na

Towards Halogen Bonding MOFs: Networking With a Polyiodinated and Perfluorinated Terphenyl Ligand and Divalent Zinc.

While halogen bonding has been employed for the construction of organic frameworks, no metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with additional halogen bonding functionality are known to date. Here, we present a suitable ligand for such systems, which combines a polyiodinated and -fluorinated terphenyl core with two carboxyl groups for metal coordination. Depending on the crystallization conditions, the ligand assembles with bivalent zinc cations into three distinct crystalline systems, either: (i) a metal-containing hydrogen-bonded organic framework; (ii) a MOF; or (iii) one-dimensional metal-organic

Relationship between salivary lactoferrin level and brain amyloid load in periodontal and non-periodontal subjects.

BACKGROUND: Lactoferrin in saliva has been proposed as a possible diagnostic biomarker for Alzheimer's disease, as it is associated with ß-amyloid load in the brain. The aim of this study was to find out whether there is an association between salivary lactoferrin and cerebral ß-amyloid load and the involvement of periodontal disease in this possible connection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six exploratory comparison groups were designed: participants with mild cognitive impairment (n=50) (positive PET-amyloid with and without periodontal disease and negative PET-amyloid with and without periodontal

Development and Testing of a Novel Stabilizer Clamp to Reduce Motion During Instrumented Cervical Fusions: The Caption System.

BACKGROUND: Navigation of spinal instrumentation is heavily dependent on maintaining an accurate registration of the local anatomy to the navigation software. Any motion of the anatomy reduces accuracy. Historically, navigation in the cervical spine has been limited by the mobile nature of the anatomy. Here, we describe the development and testing of a novel stabilizer clamp designed to reduce motion and improve stability for navigated-instrumentation accuracy. METHODS: Testing was completed both on a flat-top table and separately on a Jackson table. On both tables, the cadaveric specimen was

Efficient cyanide degradation by Aspergillus welwitschiae LOT1 isolated from industrial waste.

Cyanide is a potent cytotoxin and neurotoxin largely derived from anthropogenic activities and can accumulate in the environment through industrial wastewater, posing serious ecological and health risks. This study evaluated the cyanide degradation capacity of intact Aspergillus welwitschiae LOT1 biomass under varying physicochemical and nutritional conditions. Cyanide degradation refers to the biochemical breakdown of cyanide into simpler compounds, whereas detoxification describes the conversion of cyanide into less toxic metabolites. Cyanide removal by A. welwitschiae LOT1 was influenced by

Sodasulphanecobalamin provides rapid cyanide detoxification and hemodynamic rescue in a rat model of acute cyanide poisoning.

Current cyanide antidotes have limitations including delayed onset, methemoglobinemia, or the need for multiple agents. We developed Sodasulphanecobalamin (SSC), a cobalt‑sulfur complex integrating rapid cyanide chelation with sulfur-donor detoxification. SSC was synthesized from hydroxocobalamin and sulfur-based precursors, characterized by HPLC, HR-MS, NMR, IR, and elemental analysis, with the coordination geometry pending X-ray crystallography. In rats, SSC given 1 or 5 min after intravenous KCN (2.5 mg/kg) restored mean arterial pressure (MAP) within 5 ± 1 and 9 ± 2 min, respectively, with
