An experimental study on target recognition using white canes.

To understand basic tactile perception using white canes, we compared tapping (two times) and pushing (two times) methods using the index finger and using a white cane, with and without accompanying auditory information. Participants were six visually impaired individuals who used a white cane to walk independently in their daily lives. For each of the tapping and pushing and sound or no sound conditions, participants gave magnitude estimates for the hardness of rubber panels. Results indicated that using a white cane produces sensitivity levels equal to using a finger when accompanied by audi…

Can use of walkers or canes impede lateral compensatory stepping movements?

Although assistive devices, such as walkers and canes are often prescribed to aid in balance control, recent studies have suggested that such devices may actually increase risk of falling. In this study, we investigated one possible mechanism: the potential for walkers or canes to interfere with, or constrain, lateral movement of the feet and thereby impede execution of compensatory stepping reactions during lateral loss of balance. Lateral stepping reactions were evoked, in 10 healthy young adults (ages 22-27 years), by means of sudden unpredictable medio-lateral support surface translation. …

Gait Analysis of Hemiparetic Adult Patients with a Quadripod Cane and a Rolling Cane.

Stroke consequences include hemiparesis and difficulty walking. Several types of canes exist to overcome these alterations, but little data compares the quadripod cane and the rolling cane in hemiparetic patients. The objective of this work is twofold: to determine whether the gait speed-the most often used parameter to assess gait performance-depends on the type of cane, and to establish which spatiotemporal parameters have the most influence. Thirty-four hemiparetic patients performed 10 m walking tests at comfortable and fast speed conditions, using both canes on two different days. To obje…

Assessment of canes used by older adults in senior living communities.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to provide basic but essential information about how older cane users obtain their canes and how they use these canes for their daily mobility, since there is still lack of information on these areas. Ninety-three older (≥65 years old) subjects who use canes for daily activities were recruited from four assisted living facilities and five retirement centers for this cross-sectional study. The assessment involved interviewing cane users with a questionnaire, examining their canes, and investigating how these canes were used by their owners during amb…

Impact of chemical treatments on Leuconostoc bacteria from harvested stored cane/stale cane.

Post-harvest sucrose losses are always a critical problem for sugar industries. A predominant factor which is causing these post-harvest losses that affects sugar recovery is the bacterium Leuconostoc spp. This study aims to check the efficacy of certain chemical treatments in reducing the proliferation of this bacterium. Our study based on a Leuconostoc-specific media revealed that application of 0.5 % aqueous solution of benzalkonium chloride and sodium metasilicate (BKC + SMS), formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, sodium chloride and pine oil showed significant reduction in zone of proliferation.

A randomized comparison of energy consumption when using different canes, inpatients after stroke.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the differences in oxygen consumption associated with gait in hemiplegic patients according to the type of cane they use. DESIGN: A randomized crossover design. SETTING: University hospital-based rehabilitation center, Korea. SUBJECTS: Thirty consecutive patients (mean ± SD age, 56.3 ± 3.2 years) with chronic stroke, 17 (56.7%) males and 13 (43.3%) females. INTERVENTIONS: At approximately the same time of day for three consecutive days, each participant completed a walk with one of three randomly assigned types of canes: a single-point cane, a quad cane, and a he…

How university students view disabled people: The role of wheelchairs, canes, and unspecified mobility aids.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Mobility aids are important to disabled people as a functional tool that can enhance their participation in leisure activities and work; however, mobility aids may also have implications for how disabled people are viewed by others. Using theories from social psychology, this study aimed to understand how mobility aids contribute to the perception of mobility aid users. RESEARCH METHOD: A total of 259 participants without disabilities, who were primarily young, Caucasian, female-identifying university students, completed the questionnaires. The primary questionnaires of int

Candy cane syndrome: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Candy cane syndrome (CCS) is a condition that occurs following gastrectomy or gastric bypass. CCS remains underrecognized, yet its prevalence is likely to rise due to the obesity epidemic and increased use of bariatric surgery. No previous literature review on this subject has been published. AIM: To collate the current knowledge on CCS. METHODS: A literature search was conducted with PubMed and Google Scholar for studies from May 2007, until March 2023. The bibliographies of the retrieved articles were manually searched for additional relevant articles. RESULTS: Twenty-one arti

Pathology of mucormycosis of cane toads in Australia.

The gross and microscopic pathology of a fungal septicaemia caused by the zygomycete. Mucor amphibiorum in 27 free-ranging cane toads, Bufo marinus, in Australia is described. Seven of the 27 toads had clinical signs of illness when discovered and five of these seven were moribund. Multiple granulomas were found in many organs, and in massive infections granulomas tended to coalesce. Liver, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, heart and lung were most commonly involved, but granulomas also occurred in subcutaneous lymph spaces, skin, gastro-intestinal tract, voluntary muscle, bone, cranial cavity

Methods for estimating the proper length of a cane.

OBJECTIVE: To find a practical method of cane length measurement that achieves the elbow flexion of 20 degrees to 30 degrees. DESIGN: Two standard methods of cane length measurements were compared. Method I: Length of the cane measured from the floor to the top of the greater trochanter. Method II: Length of the cane measured from the floor to the distal wrist crease. Using an adjustable cane, each individual was fitted according to the two methods, and elbow angle was measured after each adjustment. Cane length was also correlated with arm length and height. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-two normal v

Lived Experiences of Learning to Use a Long Cane: The Importance of Integrating Perceptual, Existential, and Social Dimensions for Active Cane Use.

How do people who are blind or visually impaired experience learning to use a long cane? This question is of paramount importance for planning and delivering rehabilitation programs and orientation and mobility (O&M) training. Until now, research into learning to use a long cane has focused primarily on technical and professional aspects, paying little attention to the lived experience of the learning activities that are offered in the field of O&M. This extensive qualitative study adopts a lifeworld phenomenological approach and sets out to examine the pedagogical processes within rehabilitat

Hip abductor control in walking following stroke -- the immediate effect of canes, taping and TheraTogs on gait.

OBJECTIVE: To confirm previous findings that hip abductor activity measured by electromyography (EMG) on the side contralateral to cane use is reduced during walking in stroke patients. To assess whether an orthosis (TheraTogs) or hip abductor taping increase hemiplegic hip abductor activity compared with activity during cane walking or while walking without aids. To investigate the effect of each condition on temporo-spatial gait parameters. DESIGN: Randomized, within-participant experimental study. SETTING: Gait laboratory. SUBJECTS: Thirteen patients following first unilateral stroke. I
