Partial epilepsy and developmental delay in infant with ring chromosome 14.

Ring chromosome 14 (r14) is clinically characterized by early-onset epilepsy, mental retardation, delayed speech, microcephaly, extremely mild facial dysmorphisms and ophthalmologic abnormalities. We report a case presenting with partial seizures and delayed development in infancy in which r14 was diagnosed based on chromosomal analysis. The patient was a girl with a normal family and delivery history. Afebrile generalized convulsions developed at age 9 months, and phenobarbital was started, but was changed to zonisamide due to impaired liver function. Chromosome analysis led to a diagnosis of

First trimester diagnosis of holoprosencephaly secondary to a ring chromosome 7.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a developmental defect in humans in which the forebrain fails to completely separate into two hemispheres. We describe a 12 3/7-week-old fetus found on ultrasound evaluation to have features consistent with HPE, including a single anterior ventricle, fused thalami, and a flattened profile. Cytogenetic analysis of chorionic villi revealed a ring chromosome 7 [r(7)]. This uncommon finding has been associated with growth delay, microcephaly, and dermatologic abnormalities. However, both the clinical features and the extent of cytogenetic imbalance of chromosome 7 are va

[Analysis of ring chromosome 9 syndrome with fluorescence in situ hybridization].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of the ring chromosome 9 formation by cytogenetic analysis of one case affected with ring chromosome 9 syndrome. METHODS: Routine chromosome GTG-binding analysis and dual-color fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with TelVision 9p and 9q probes were applied to characterize the case. RESULTS: The G-binding revealed that the patient had ring chromosome 9 with the following karyotype: 45,X,-9/46,XX,r(9)(p24q34)/46,XX,r(9;9)(p24q34;p24q34)[4/92/4]. The dual-color FISH analysis with TelVision 9p and TelVision 9q probes failed to detect a hybridization

[A case of mosaic ring chromosome 4 with subtelomeric 4p deletion].

Ring chromosome is a structural abnormality that is thought to be the result of fusion and breakage in the short and long arms of chromosome. Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a well-known congenital anomaly in the ring chromosome 4 with a partial deletion of the distal short arm. Here we report a 10-month-old male of mosaic ring chromosome 4 with the chief complaint of severe short stature. He showed the height of -4 standard deviation, subtle hypothyroidism and mild atrial septal defect/ventricular septal defect, and also a mild language developmental delay was suspected. Brain magnetic reso

Dilated ascending aorta in a child with ring chromosome 21 syndrome.

Ring chromosome 21 syndrome is a rare condition with a well-characterized phenotype. Affected individuals have recognizable dysmorphic features, developmental delays, growth retardation, and a predisposition for congenital malformations involving the neurologic, craniofacial, digestive, genitourinary, skeletal, and hematologic systems. Structural cardiac anomalies have also been described, but dilated ascending aorta has not been previously reported in association with ring 21 (r(21)). Although rarely seen in this syndrome, the presence of ectopia lentis, abdominal herniae, and dilated ascendi

Inherited ring chromosome 8 without loss of subtelomeric sequences.

We report the first case of inherited ring chromosome 8 syndrome without loss of subtelomeric sequences. The proband is a 6 1/2-year-old boy with short stature, microcephaly, mild mental retardation, and behavioral problems including hyperactivity and attention deficit. His mother presented the same physical features but intelligence was normal. Family history also revealed an uncle and a grandmother, with short stature and microcephaly. Moderate mental retardation was reported in the uncle. Karyotypes and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses were performed on peripheral blood ly

Ring chromosome 14 with localization-related epilepsy: three cases.

Three patients showing epileptic seizures and with mosaicism of ring chromosome 14 and monosomy for chromosome 14 are described. Patients were a 17-year-old boy, karyotype 46, XY, r(14)(p12q32.33)/45, XY, -14, a 7-month-old boy, karyotype 46, XY, r(14)(p11.2q32.33)/45, XY, -14, and a 10-month-old boy, karyotype 46, XY, r(14)(p12q32.31)/45, XY, -14. Microcephaly and alopecia were observed in the first patient. However, few dysmorphic features were found typical of ring 14 chromosome. He had exhibited complex partial seizures with secondary generalization at age 3 months and had mild motor and m

Ring 2 chromosome: ten-year follow-up report.

Côté et al. [1981: Ann Genet 24:231-235] suggested that ring chromosomes without a preceding deletion share a common pattern of phenotypic anomalies, independent of what chromosome is involved. The phenotype of such a "general ring syndrome" consists of growth failure without malformations, few or no minor anomalies, and mild-to-moderate mental retardation. We report on a patient with a ring 2 chromosome with features suggestive of Silver-Russell syndrome at birth and striking postnatal growth retardation with minor intellectual involvement supporting Côté's suggestion. This would be the ninth…

Mild developmental delay due to ring chromosome 19 mosaicism.

Children with mild developmental delay without dysmorphic features do not often have identifiable underlying aetiological factors. We report on a 5-year-old girl with mild developmental delay and dysmorphic features which were previously unrecognized. She was found to have supernumerary ring chromosome 19 mosaicism which was the likely cause of her clinical problems. Her parents' chromosomes were normal. A careful examination for dysmorphic features should be done in all children with developmental delay. However, these may not be readily apparent in babies and very young children. Chromosomal

Hypothalamic growth hormone deficiency in a patient with ring chromosome 18.

We report on a boy with a ring 18 chromosome associated with hypothalamic growth hormone (GH) deficiency. A 12-month trial of GH replacement therapy (0.5 U/kg/week) resulted in a marked growth acceleration. Our findings emphasise the need of evaluating GH secretion in patients with abnormalities of the 18 chromosome.

[Van der Woude syndrome in combination with ring chromosome 18].

7-month-old girl with a combination of van der Woude syndrome and ring chromosome 18 showed the following malformations: medial palate cleft, fistulas of the lower lips, hypertelorism, epicanthus, antimongoloid position of the eyelids, a small hymenal appendix, plantar placing of the third toe, atrial septum defect, stenosis of the auditory canal. The combination of fistulas of the lower lip and cleft lip or palate already established the diagnosis of Van der Woude Syndrome. Because of the additional malformations observed a chromosome analysis was performed which demonstrated a ring chromosom

Ring chromosome 4: Wolf syndrome and unspecific developmental anomalies.

A new case of ring chromosome 4 in a 18-month-old girl is described. The patient presented extreme growth failure, psychomotor retardation, and some features of 4p deletion or Wolf syndrome. No significant loss of genetic material could be seen by G-banding technique (breakpoints p16q35). The ring was found to be unstable both in lymphocyte and fibroblast culture and a substantial proportion of aneuploid cells containing derivatives of the ring could be observed. An increased cell death-rate could be detected by cell viability determination with trypan blue in the first subculture of skin fibr

An infant with ring 17 chromosome and unusual dermatoglyphs: a new syndrome?

A case of ring 17 chromosome in a 5-month-old male infant is investigated and compared with five previously reported cases. The findings commonly observed in these patients include mental and motor retardation, seizures, short stature, muscular hypotonia, and microcephaly among others. Dermatoglyphic studies showed an increased number of ulnar loops. More interestingly, bilateral transverse hypothenar creases were noted. Two of the reported cases also had unspecified genital abnormalities. The variation in clinical findings among these patients may be explained by a difference in the breakpoin

Ring 20 chromosome in a child with seizures, minor anomalies, and retardation.

A patient is reported with seizures, developmental delay, and minor physical anomalies. Karyotype showed a ring formation of chromosome number 20. Previously reported patients with this chromosomal aberration have typically had seizures and behavioural disorders with considerable variation in the degree of physical abnormality and mental retardation. A correct diagnosis in such a case is important for accurate genetic counselling.

A Turner syndrome woman with a ring X chromosome [45,X/46,X,r(X)(p22.3q27)] whose child also had a ring X chromosome.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a woman with Turner syndrome with ring X chromosome mosaicism who had a child who possessed the same ring X chromosome. DESIGN: Polymorphisms of genes located on the X chromosome from genomic DNA of the mother, father, and the child were evaluated. PATIENT(S): The mother's karyotype was 45,X [48]/46,X,r(X)(p22.3q27) [2], and the child's karyotype was 45,X[33]/46,X,r(X)(p22.3q27) [17]. INTERVENTION(S): Polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify short tandem repeats from the loci of the hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase gene and the androgen receptor gene. RESU

"Ring syndrome" involving chromosome 2 confirmed by FISH analysis using chromosome-specific subtelomeric probes.

"Ring syndrome" is described as those cases with complete ring chromosomes showing, independently of the chromosome involved, severe growth failure, minor dysmorphic features, and mild-to-moderate mental retardation, without major malformations. We present a girl with ring 2 chromosome, exhibiting severe growth failure, minor dysmorphic features, spontaneously closed ventricular septum defect, and normal development. G-banding chromosome analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis using chromosome-specific subtelomeric probes (2ptel, 2qtel) demonstrated the major karyotype …

Somatic mosaicism of chromosome 7 in a highly proliferating melanocytic congenital naevus in a ring chromosome 7 patient.

Ring chromosome 7 is a rare but well documented chromosomal aberration in man. So far at least 14 cases have been reported in the literature showing a variable but distinct pattern of phenotypic characteristics in affected individuals. Besides others, skin findings as pigmented naevi are especially frequent. Loss of chromosomal material from the terminal chromosome arms in the structurally abnormal ring chromosome 7 as well as somatic mosaicism with loss or gain of chromosome 7 has been suggested to be responsible for the clinical symptoms. We now report another case of a ring chromosome 7 in
