Optimizing multimodal scene recognition through relevant feature selection approach for scene classification.

Scene classification plays a vital role in various computer vision applications, but building deep learning models from scratch is a very time-intensive process. Transfer learning is an excellent classification method using the predefined model. In our proposed work, we introduce a novel method of multimodal feature extraction and a feature selection technique to improve the efficiency of transfer learning in scene classification. We leverage widely used convolutional neural networks (CNN) for feature extraction, followed by relevant feature selection techniques to enhance the performance of t

A multi-modal dataset of electroencephalography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy recordings for motor imagery of multi-types of joints from unilateral upper limb.

As one of the important brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigms, motor imagery (MI) enables the control of external devices via identification of motor intention by decoding the features of Electroencephalography (EEG). Movement imagination of multi-types of joints from the same limb allows the development of more accurate and intuitive BCI systems. In this work, we reported an open dataset including EEG and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) recordings from 18 subjects performing eight MI tasks from four types of joints including hand open/close, wrist flexion/extension, wrist abd

Robust Decoding of Upper-Limb Movement Direction Under Cognitive Distraction With Invariant Patterns in Embedding Manifold.

Motor brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have gained growing research interest in motor rehabilitation, restoration, and prostheses control. Decoding upper-limb movement direction with noninvasive BCIs has been extensively investigated. However, few of them address the intervention of cognitive distraction that impairs decoding performance in practice. In this study, we propose a novel decoding model with invariant patterns in embedding manifold on a mixed dataset pooled from electroencephalograph (EEG) signals under different attentional states. We reconstruct an embedding low-dimensional manif

Efficient electrocardiogram generation based on cardiac electric vector simulation model.

This study introduces a novel Cardiac Electric Vector Simulation Model (CEVSM) to address the computational inefficiencies and low fidelity of traditional electrophysiological models in generating electrocardiograms (ECGs). Our approach leverages CEVSM to efficiently produce reliable ECG samples, facilitating data augmentation essential for the computer-aided diagnosis of myocardial infarction (MI). Significantly, experimental results show that our model dramatically reduces computation time compared to conventional models, with the self-adapting regression transformation matrix method (SRTM)

[Research progress on endoscopic image diagnosis of gastric tumors based on deep learning].

Gastric tumors are neoplastic lesions that occur in the stomach, posing a great threat to human health. Gastric cancer represents the malignant form of gastric tumors, and early detection and treatment are crucial for patient recovery. Endoscopic examination is the primary method for diagnosing gastric tumors. Deep learning techniques can automatically extract features from endoscopic images and analyze them, significantly improving the detection rate of gastric cancer and serving as an important tool for auxiliary diagnosis. This paper reviews relevant literature in recent years, presenting t

A Modified Deep Semantic Segmentation Model for Analysis of Whole Slide Skin Images.

Automated segmentation of biomedical image has been recognized as an important step in computer-aided diagnosis systems for detection of abnormalities. Despite its importance, the segmentation process remains an open challenge due to variations in color, texture, shape diversity and boundaries. Semantic segmentation often requires deeper neural networks to achieve higher accuracy, making the segmentation model more complex and slower. Due to the need to process a large number of biomedical images, more efficient and cheaper image processing techniques for accurate segmentation are needed. In t

Development and characterization of HCMV recombinant subunit vaccines based on T-cell epitopes.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a ubiquitous β-herpes virus, mostly causes asymptomatic infections in adults with healthy immune systems. Due to immunosuppressive therapy, solid organ transplantation (SOT) recipients are at increased risk of HCMV infection. In recent years, the interdisciplinary, filed of immunoinformatics, based on computer science, and modern immunology, has emerged. In this study, we designed three types of recombinant subunit vaccines, which are expressed by the E. coli BL21 strain according to immunoinformatics prediction. Subsequently, we evaluated the innate and cellular

Deep-learning based detection of vessel occlusions on CT-angiography in patients with suspected acute ischemic stroke.

Swift diagnosis and treatment play a decisive role in the clinical outcome of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), and computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems can accelerate the underlying diagnostic processes. Here, we developed an artificial neural network (ANN) which allows automated detection of abnormal vessel findings without any a-priori restrictions and in <2 minutes. Pseudo-prospective external validation was performed in consecutive patients with suspected AIS from 4 different hospitals during a 6-month timeframe and demonstrated high sensitivity (≥87%) and negative predictive v

Current Indications for Spinal Endoscopic Surgery and Potential for Future Expansion.

Endoscopic spine surgery (ESS) has evolved as a safe, effective, and efficient alternative for minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS). The innovation of full-endoscopic systems makes definitive decompression surgery through different approaches feasible. The approach can be determined according to the location of the target lesion or the surgeon's preference. During the past 2 decades, ESS has expanded its indications from lumbar to cervical spines. Except for decompression, endoscopy-assisted fusion surgery is also developing. However, ESS is still evolving and has a steep learning curve. Th

Self-evolving vision transformer for chest X-ray diagnosis through knowledge distillation.

Although deep learning-based computer-aided diagnosis systems have recently achieved expert-level performance, developing a robust model requires large, high-quality data with annotations that are expensive to obtain. This situation poses a conundrum that annually-collected chest x-rays cannot be utilized due to the absence of labels, especially in deprived areas. In this study, we present a framework named distillation for self-supervision and self-train learning (DISTL) inspired by the learning process of the radiologists, which can improve the performance of vision transformer simultaneousl

Classification of Multiclass Histopathological Breast Images Using Residual Deep Learning.

Pathologists need a lot of clinical experience and time to do the histopathological investigation. AI may play a significant role in supporting pathologists and resulting in more accurate and efficient histopathological diagnoses. Breast cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in women worldwide. Breast cancer may be detected and diagnosed using imaging methods such as histopathological images. Since various tissues make up the breast, there is a wide range of textural intensity, making abnormality detection difficult. As a result, there is an urgent need to improve computer-assisted syste

Multiscale Modeling of the Mitochondrial Origin of Cardiac Reentrant and Fibrillatory Arrhythmias.

While mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiac arrhythmias, how the abnormality occurring at the organelle level escalates to influence the rhythm of the heart remains incompletely understood. This is due, in part, to the complexity of the interactions formed by cardiac electrical, mechanical, and metabolic subsystems at various spatiotemporal scales that is difficult to fully comprehend solely with experiments. Computational models have emerged as a powerful tool to explore complicated and highly dynamic biological systems such as the heart, alone or in com

Explainable AI-based clinical decision support system for hearing disorders.

In clinical system design, human-computer interaction and explainability are important topics of research. Clinical systems need to provide users with not only results but also an account of their behaviors. In this research, we propose a knowledge-based clinical decision support system (CDSS) for the diagnosis and therapy of hearing disorders, such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, and misophonia. Our prototype eTRT system offers an explainable output that we expect to increase its trustworthiness and acceptance in the clinical setting. Within this paper, we: (1) present the problem area of tinnitus

Functional Tasks Performed by People with Severe Muscular Atrophy Using an sEMG Controlled Robotic Manipulator.

For paralyzed people activities of daily living like eating or drinking are impossible without external assistance. Robotic assistance systems can give these people a part of their independence back. Especially if the operation with a joystick is not possible anymore due to a missing hand function, people need innovative interfaces to control assistive robots in 3D. Besides brain computer interfaces an approach based on surface electromyography (sEMG) can present an opportunity for people with a strong muscular atrophy. In this work we show that two people with proceeded spinal muscular atroph

Toward Multimodal Human-Robot Interaction to Enhance Active Participation of Users in Gait Rehabilitation.

Robotic exoskeletons for physical rehabilitation have been utilized for retraining patients suffering from paraplegia and enhancing motor recovery in recent years. However, users are not voluntarily involved in most systems. This paper aims to develop a locomotion trainer with multiple gait patterns, which can be controlled by the active motion intention of users. A multimodal human-robot interaction (HRI) system is established to enhance subject's active participation during gait rehabilitation, which includes cognitive HRI (cHRI) and physical HRI (pHRI). The cHRI adopts brain-computer interf

Tooth separation from dental model using segmentation field.

Tooth segmentation on dental model is an essential step of computer-aided-design systems for orthodontic virtual treatment planning. However, efficiently identifying cutting boundary to separate tooth from dental model still remains a challenge, due to various geometrical shapes of teeth, complex tooth arrangements and varying degrees of crowding problem. Most segmentation approaches presented before are not able to achieve a balance between fine segmentation results and simple operating procedure. In this article, we present a novel and efficient framework that achieves tooth segmentation bas

Somatosensory responses in a human motor cortex.

Somatic sensory signals provide a major source of feedback to motor cortex. Changes in somatosensory systems after stroke or injury could profoundly influence brain computer interfaces (BCI) being developed to create new output signals from motor cortex activity patterns. We had the unique opportunity to study the responses of hand/arm area neurons in primary motor cortex to passive joint manipulation in a person with a long-standing brain stem stroke but intact sensory pathways. Neurons responded to passive manipulation of the contralateral shoulder, elbow, or wrist as predicted from prior st

Completely automated segmentation approach for breast ultrasound images using multiple-domain features.

Lesion segmentation is a challenging task for computer aided diagnosis systems. In this article, we propose a novel and fully automated segmentation approach for breast ultrasound (BUS) images. The major contributions of this work are: an efficient region-of-interest (ROI) generation method is developed and new features to characterize lesion boundaries are proposed. After a ROI is located automatically, two newly proposed lesion features (phase in max-energy orientation and radial distance), combined with a traditional intensity-and-texture feature, are utilized to detect the lesion by a trai
