OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and usefulness of systems for obtaining central venous access.
DESIGN: Prospective open study.
SETTING: Clinica Universitaria de Navarra, Spain.

During a 26-month period, 158 central venous catheters were inserted in 114 children (median age: 4.5 years) with malignant diseases. Polyurethane catheters were used, inserted either using a cut-down procedure or percutaneously in the external or internal jugular vein. The signs and symptoms produced by 4 different types of 7F double pigtail catheters, including Cook polyurethane pigtail stent, Surgitek Silitek Uropass, Cook C-Flex and Van-Tec Soft stent, were analyzed prospectively. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Complete stricture of the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ), ureter, or both represents a secondary upper tract obstruction and is a challenge for surgical management. The endourologic repair of these complete strictures remains controversial because of the many unsatisfactory results in the literature. Free floating segments of block copolyurethane were implanted into rat bladders and compared with similar implants of silicone rubber. This urethane was far superior to silicone rubber in its ability to withstand incrustation in the rat bladder.
