The potential impact of prophylaxis against bronchiolitis due to the respiratory syncytial virus in children with congenital cardiac malformations.

AIMS: To determine the number of infants in the Mersey and North West regions with congenital cardiac disease for whom palivizumab may be appropriate, and to examine the potential impact of introducing prophylaxis with palivizumab on these patients and their economic management. METHODS: We identified those infants deemed to be at high risk, matching the population recently studied by the Cardiac Synagis Group, from the database of the cardiology department of the hospital. The number of patients under the care of the paediatric cardiologists admitted to Alder Hey Hospital with respiratory sy

[Ethical dilemmas associated with hypoplastic left-heart syndrome].

This questionnaire-based study elucidates the attitudes of Norwegian paediatricians and child cardiologists towards the surgical treatment of hypoplastic left-heart syndrome. During the last five years, 29 out of 53 Norwegian children have received surgical treatment in the USA or Switzerland. To date, approximately 50% of the children have survived three operations. In the present study, which comprises 26 of the physicians who are most frequently confronted with these children, none expressed that they were opposed to surgical treatment. Five of the 26 physicians stated that surgery should b

Management of Marfan Syndrome during pregnancy: A real world experience from a Joint Cardiac Obstetric Service.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy in Marfan Syndrome (MFS) is associated with increased maternal risk of cardiovascular events. Given the maternal and genetic risks, pre-conception counselling is essential to facilitate informed choices. Multidisciplinary antenatal care with regular imaging is mandatory and best delivered through a Joint Cardiac Obstetric Service (JCOS). The aim of this study was to compare the care delivered in a JCOS against recognised international standards (European Society of Cardiology (ESC)). METHODS: Pregnancies in women with MFS from 2005 to 2015 were identified from our instit

A new hope in the treatment of coronary vasospasm: bosentan.

Atherosclerosis is the most important cause of acute coronary syndromes. The mediators that trigger vasospasm, including endothelin and serotonin, are synthesized and secreted into circulation from atherosclerotic plaques and surrounding tissues. A 68-year-old man was hospitalized due to acute coronary syndrome four times in a one-year period. The patient presented to emergency service again with heartburn and a pressure-like pain in his upper abdomen in February 2012. He was admitted to the coronary care unit with the detection of a more than three-fold increase in troponin values and ischemi

Long-term cardiology outcomes in children after early treatment for Chagas disease, an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Parasite persistence after acute infection with Trypanosoma cruzi is an important factor in the development of Chagas disease (CD) cardiomyopathy. Few studies have investigated the clinical effectiveness of CD treatment through the evaluation of cardiological events by long term follow-up of treated children. Cardiological evaluation in children is challenging since features that would be diagnosed as abnormal in an adult's ECG may be normal, age-related findings in a pediatric ECG trace. The objective was to evaluate cardiac involvement in patients with Chagas disease with a minim
