OBJECTIVE: To compare the holding strength of a conventional plate-screw construct with a locking plate-screw construct in the thin cortical bone of the canine mandibular ramus.
STUDY DESIGN: Mechanical study.
ANIMALS: Paired cadaveric canine mandibles (n = 10 pairs).
METHODS: Perpendicular pull-out testing was performed on 2.0-mm limited-contact dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP)-screw constructs and 2.0-mm string-of-pearls (SOP) plate-screw constructs applied to the ramus of the canine mandible. Pull-out force was applied perpendicular to the long axis of the plates. Construct stiffness a

OBJECTIVE: To describe surgical repair of a large atrial septal defect (ASD) in a cat.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report.
ANIMAL: A 3-year-old, 3.3 kg, intact male Japanese domestic short-haired cat.
METHODS: A 10.2-mm-diameter ASD detected by echocardiography was surgically corrected because pulmonary vascular resistance-to-systemic vascular resistance ratio (Qp /Qs ) was 3.2. Using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), open surgical repair was achieved with an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) graft. The priming volume of the CPB circuit was minimized by cutting the CPB tubing, and partially

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study.
ANIMALS: Mature rams (n=6), estrus-induced ewes (2). METHODS; After local anesthesia, epididymis ligation was achieved by restraining the testis distally within the scrotal sac and passing suture through a hypodermic needle inserted between tail of epididymis and distal pole of testis, caudomedial to craniolateral through the scrotum. The needle was removed leaving the suture in place and the testis pushed up do

OBJECTIVE: To report laparoscopic splenectomy in a dog.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report.
ANIMALS: Mixed breed dog (n=1).
METHODS: Hemangiosarcoma was diagnosed by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of a splenic mass in an 11-year-old, 30 kg, mixed breed dog. No metastatic disease was identified during complete staging (chest radiographs, echocardiogram, and abdominal ultrasonography); however, cystic calculi were identified. Laparoscopic splenectomy using Ligasure V was performed through 3 portals and the calculi were removed by laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopy.
RESULTS: Total surgical
