OBJECTIVE: Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNDO) is the most common cause of neonatal epiphora. Persistence can lead to chronic dacryocystitis and amblyopia. This study analyzed the association between the incidence of CNDO and delivery by cesarean section.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of 386 children with CNDO (born between 2000 and 2008). The incidence of the delivery mode in patients with CNDO was compared with data from a corresponding population derived from annual birth statistics.

PURPOSE: To identify the ocular features of the chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and to provide ophthalmologic examination recommendations for affected patients.
METHODS: Ocular abnormalities were evaluated prospectively in patients with 22q11.2 deletion at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia between 1997 and 1999.
RESULTS: Ninety patients with confirmed 22q11.2 deletion were examined. Posterior embryotoxon was found in 49%, tortuous retinal vessels in 34%, eyelid hooding in 20%, strabismus in 18%, ptosis in 4%, amblyopia in 4%, and tilted optic nerves in 1%.

From 1971 through 1985, a diagnosis of monocular congenital cataract was made in 14 consecutive patients. All patients had a visually significant cataract that was documented at birth or within 2 months of age. All patients were followed up long enough to report distance linear recognition acuity. Clinical observations indicated a prompt cessation of episcleral capillary bleeding after exposure of those tissues to aqueous humor during intraocular surgery. Based on this observation, both aqueous and vitreous humors were obtained from eyes provided by an eye bank and from human eyes prior to intraocular surgery. We describe a method for deriving the linear cortical magnification factor from positional error across the visual field. We compared magnification obtained from this method between normally sighted individuals and amblyopic individuals, who receive atypical visual input during development.
