Supplementing Consent for a Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study of Infants With Antenatal Opioid Exposure: Development and Assessment of a Digital Tool.

BACKGROUND: The Outcomes of Babies With Opioid Exposure (OBOE) study is an observational cohort study examining the impact of antenatal opio … s a supplement to the consent process. Participants selected from 3 racially and ethnically diverse avatars to guide them through the 11-minute video with recorded voice-overs. After viewing the consenter video, participants completed a short survey to assess their knowledge of the study, experiences with the consent process, and perceptions of the tool, …

Sexual Assault Victimization in Virtual Worlds: A Cyberlifestyle-Routine Activity Theory Approach.

This study explores sexual assault victimization in virtual worlds (virtual sexual assault; VSA), immersive environments where users interact through avatars. As these spaces expand, concerns about negative experiences akin to real-world sexual assault also grow. Despite this, quantitative analyses of VSA victimization remain limited. This research addresses this gap by exploring the prevalence of VSA victimization over the previous year and identifying potential predictors of VSA victimization through the lens of cyberlifestyle-routine activity theory (CLRAT). To achieve this, the current res…

Retention of Training Effects in Police Officers Following Scalable AI Simulations of Child Sexual Abuse Interviews.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) investigations require high-quality interviews, but maintaining interviewing skills long-term has been challenging. This study investigated the long-term effectiveness of avatar-based interview training for CSA investigations among 478 police officers. Participants were randomly assigned to single booster (n = 291) or double booster (n = 187) groups. Following initial training, the single booster group received reinforcement at 6 months, while the double booster group received sessions at 1 and 6 months. Results showed that initial training significantly improved inter…

Gravity center estimation for evaluation of standing whole body compensation using virtual barycentremetry based on biplanar slot-scanning stereoradiography - validation by simultaneous force plate measurement.

BACKGROUND: Whole body standing alignment (WBSA) in terms of biomechanics can be evaluated accurately only by referring the gravity line (GL) which lies on the gravity center (GC). Here, we introduce a method for estimating GL and simultaneous WBSA measurement using the EOS® imaging system and report on the reproducibility and reliability of the method. METHODS: A 3-dimensional (3D) avatar to estimate GC was created following three steps: 3D reconstruction of the bone based on EOS images; deformation into a generic morphotype (MakeHuman statistical model) before density integration with 3D ra…

Social attention in a virtual public speaking task in higher functioning children with autism.

Impairments in social attention play a major role in autism, but little is known about their role in development after preschool. In this study, a public speaking task was used to study social attention, its moderators, and its association with classroom learning in elementary and secondary students with higher functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD). Thirty-seven students with HFASD and 54 age- and intelligence quotient (IQ)-matched peers without symptoms of ASD were assessed in a virtual classroom public speaking paradigm. This paradigm assessed the ability to attend to nine avatar peer…

Behavioral characterization of dynamic facial expression perception in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) using naturalistic and synthetic stimuli.

Facial displays are an important channel of communication for primates, yet it remains unclear based on which criteria monkeys evaluate facial expressions. We trained two rhesus macaques to categorize videos of four facial expression types (neutral, lip-smacking, silent bared-teeth (SBT) and open-mouth threat displays) and then tested generalization to novel individuals and avatars while measuring pupillary responses. The animals were able to categorize facial expressions and generalized their classifications to novel, untrained videos, although performance was not perfect. Misclassifications …

Rhesus monkeys use both eye and head gaze to reallocate covert spatial attention facilitating visual perception.

Nonverbal cues, particularly eye-gaze, significantly shape human social interactions. Although nonhuman primates reliably follow head gaze, their capacity to use eye-gaze alone for inferring the other's focus of attention remains debated. We investigated this question using a realistic rhesus monkey head avatar that directed its gaze toward one of two LEDs (left or right), employing either eye movements alone or combined eye and head movements. After a randomly chosen interval (range: 50-400 ms) from gaze presentation, one LED transiently increased its luminance to near-threshold levels. Rhesu…

Gelotophobia and the challenges of implementing laughter into virtual agents interactions.

This study investigated which features of AVATAR laughter are perceived threatening for individuals with a fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia), and individuals with no gelotophobia. Laughter samples were systematically varied (e.g., intensity, laughter pitch, and energy for the voice, intensity of facial actions of the face) in three modalities: animated facial expressions, synthesized auditory laughter vocalizations, and motion capture generated puppets displaying laughter body movements. In the online study 123 adults completed, the GELOPH <15 > (Ruch and Proyer, 2008a,b) and rated rando…

Chip collection of hepatocellular carcinoma based on O2 heterogeneity from patient tissue.

Hepatocellular carcinoma frequently recurs after surgery, necessitating personalized clinical approaches based on tumor avatar models. However, location-dependent oxygen concentrations resulting from the dual hepatic vascular supply drive the inherent heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment, which presents challenges in developing an avatar model. In this study, tissue samples from 12 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma are cultured directly on a chip and separated based on preference of oxygen concentration. Establishing a dual gradient system with drug perfusion perpendicular to the o…

Context-dependent placebo hypoalgesia through observational learning: the role of empathy in immersive and non-immersive environments.

Digital environments are increasingly used to study social and pain-related behaviors. Empathy and contextual factors influence observationally induced placebo analgesia. We tested whether state empathy (i.e., immediate affective and cognitive responses to another's experience) differs when observing a demonstrator in immersive VR versus 2D video, and whether this modulation affects placebo hypoalgesia. Forty-seven participants observed a human or avatar demonstrator receiving painful stimulation with or without placebo, then experienced the same stimulations. Observation induced significant p…

Quantifying posture differences between wheelchair users and standard automotive posture.

Vehicles with automated driving systems may provide substantial benefits to individuals who travel while seated in wheelchairs. Despite the importance of posture data for developing occupant protection systems, limited research has analysed wheelchair user posture in the context of automotive safety. In this study, we obtained three-dimensional postural data of 75 people seated in their personal wheelchairs and generated individualised baseline avatars in automotive posture using HumanShape software. Generated avatars were manually adjusted to match the posture of the field scan, and anatomica…

TerraFirma: A Low-Cost and Effective 360 VR Extension for Viewpoint Translation and Collaboration.

This paper presents an approach for extending 360 VR to support viewpoint translation and collaboration, without increasing the acquisition cost. The approach models the ground under the 360° image acquisition viewpoint with a planar patch, on which the user stands and walks. The planar patch is connected to the background with visual continuity. The approach anchors the user's avatar to the ground patch, and supports collaboration, with multiple avatars standing on the patch. The approach only requires defining two trivial parameters: the approximate acquisition height, and the size of the pa…

Motion Learning System for Low Back Pain Prevention for Nurses: Exploring Posture Detection with Kinect.

Nurses frequently experience significant strain on their lower backs while lifting and moving patients, making it essential to learn proper posture that considers biomechanics for low back pain prevention. However, traditional methods make it difficult for nurses to objectively assess their posture and confirm mastery. To address this issue, a motion learning system using Virtual Reality (VR) was developed. This system displays two avatars: one that replicates the learner's posture and another that demonstrates the correct posture of an expert, allowing learners to visually recognize posture d…

Motor Imagery Performance through Embodied Digital Twins in a Virtual Reality-Enabled Brain-Computer Interface Environment.

This study introduces an innovative framework for neurological rehabilitation by integrating brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and virtual reality (VR) technologies with the customization of three-dimensional (3D) avatars. Traditional approaches to rehabilitation often fail to fully engage patients, primarily due to their inability to provide a deeply immersive and interactive experience. This research endeavors to fill this gap by utilizing motor imagery (MI) techniques, where participants visualize physical movements without actual execution. This method capitalizes on the brain's neural mecha…

Virtual social interactions in social anxiety--the impact of sex, gaze, and interpersonal distance.

In social interactions, interpersonal distance between interaction partners plays an important role in determining the status of the relatio … ctions. High socially anxious participants showed a complex pattern of avoidance behavior: when the avatar was standing farther away, high socially anxious women avoided gaze contact with male avatars showing a direct gaze. Furthermore, they showed avoidance behavior (backward head movements) in response to male avatars showing a direct gaze, regardless …

Self-initiated humour protocol: a pilot study with an AI agent.

INTRODUCTION: Non-hostile humour and laughter have been known for therapeutic benefits in an individual's mental health and wellbeing. To this end, we evaluated the Self-Initiated Humour Protocol (SIHP), a new type of self-administrable laughter intervention that utilises spontaneous and self-induced laughter. Rooted in the core principles of the Self-Attachment Technique-in which an individual creates an affectional bond with their childhood self as represented by their childhood photo or personalised childhood avatar-SIHP provides an algorithmic framework for individuals to learn to laugh in…

Reshaping restriction: virtual embodiment modulates eating biases in anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) involves extreme food restriction and body image disturbances, partly sustained by altered responses to food cues, including implicit and behavioral avoidance, especially toward high-calorie foods. We tested whether altering body ownership in virtual reality could modulate such biases. Female participants with restricting-subtype AN (AN-R; n = 29) and healthy controls (HC; n = 31) completed three sessions: a baseline and two full-body illusion (FBI) sessions in which they embodied slimmer or larger avatars than their own body size. Across sessions, they performed a binocu…
