Lemierre syndrome from an odontogenic source: a review for dentists.

Lemierre syndrome, which can result from a recent oropharyngeal or odontogenic infection, is characterized by clinical or radiographic signs of thrombosis of the internal jugular vein, distant infected emboli and the presence of anaerobic pathogens, usually Fusobacterium necrophorum. The septic emboli resulting from the infected thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein give the syndrome its constellation of central nervous system, pulmonary and many other manifestations including septic shock. This condition was so rare that, historically, it became known as the "forgotten disease," but a

Self-reported needle-stick injuries among dentists in north Jordan.

The incidence of needle-stick injuries and the reporting attitudes among dentists in the north of Jordan were assessed with a cross-sectional survey. The study included 170 general dental practitioners (119 males and 51 females), of whom 113 (66.5%) were injured within the preceding 12 months. Needle-stick injury was significantly associated with higher age and a higher number of patients treated daily. Of those who were injured, 77.9% did not report the injury. Reasons for not reporting needle-stick injury were: because it took place before use on a patient (41.2%), ignorance of the risk (20.

Oral cancer and dentists: knowledge, attitudes, and practices in Italy.

The purpose of the survey was to assess through a mailed questionnaire the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding oral cancer and their relationship with different indicators in a random sample of 1000 dentists in Italy. Respondents know the major risk factors and only half identify the diagnostic procedures. One-third indicated the most common form and the early lesions and this knowledge was more likely in those graduated from dental school and attended a course on oral cancer in the previous year. Approximately two-thirds (64.8%) believed that they were prepared to perform an oral ca

Dentists' judgment strategies on prophylactic removal of mandibular third molars.

The number of molars selected for prophylactic removal varies widely among general dental practitioners and oral surgeons. To understand the basis for such variations, we investigated two hypotheses: (1) Individual judgment strategies will differ concerning the use of cues (items of information), and (2) few dentists will integrate the cues according to evidence in the literature. To analyze 30 general dental practitioners' (GDPs) and 10 oral surgeons' use of cues in the judgment preceding the treatment decision, we used the Brunwik's lens as a conceptual model. The cues were the patient's age

Patch tests with occupational contactants in nurses, doctors and dentists.

In this study, 333 nurses, 92 dentists and 167 doctors were investigated. Most positive patch tests obtained were unrelated to occupation. Nurses were most often sensitized to penicillins and, of the disinfectants, formaldehyde was the commonest cause of occupational dermatitis. Among dentists, the most common occupational allergens were eugenol and mercuric chloride. Among surgeons, as compared with physicians, there were frequent reactions to mercuric chloride and balsam of Peru, and a higher number of positive patch tests with other contactants. Among those sensitized to chromium, 4 doctors

Training sports dentists: a role in elite sport and society.

Within the specialised world of elite sports, it is important that specifically well-trained 'sports dentists' are available to support elite athletes. Their role may be very different to that of the general dental practitioner, as the sports dentist needs to have a clear understanding of sporting dental trauma, prevention of tooth tissue loss, screening of athletes during preparation for major sporting events, and be adaptable to the field-of-play role during sporting events. In addition, they need to fulfil the role of a general dental practitioner as well. The training of these individuals

Dentists' choice of treatment for root caries - a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Despite existing recommendations for root caries treatment, their implementation in clinical practice remains inconsistent. This qualitative study explores the factors influencing dentists' decision-making in selecting appropriate therapies for root caries. METHODS: A structured interview guide was designed based on the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), and 15 semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with dentists (mean (min/max) professional experience: 14.8 (3/48) years). The interview transcripts were analysed using the TDF and the Capability-Opportunity-Motivati

Barriers to and facilitators of general dentists performing intraoral biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer relies heavily on biopsy for definitive diagnosis. Yet biopsies remain underused in general dentist practices. To better understand these practice behaviors, the authors examined whether general dentists perform intraoral biopsies and what they perceived to be barriers to and facilitators of their biopsy-related behaviors in practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to licensed members of the Indiana Dental Association. The survey was used to assess demographic characteristics, trainin

Dentists' Satisfaction With the Dental Amalgam Phase Down Training Programme.

BACKGROUND: Dental amalgam phase down (DAPD) has ushered in a paradigm shift towards the use of adhesive alternative restorative dental materials and dental caries prevention. The emergence of a new restorative practice model has created a gap among some dentists, highlighting the need to reorient their knowledge and skills. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to assess dentists' level of satisfaction with a DAPD training programme and identify associations between sociodemographic characteristics and satisfaction levels, in Kenya, a low- and middle-income country.  Materials and me

Early detection of oral cancer: a key role for dentists?

PURPOSE: The majority of suspected malignant changes in the oral mucosa are detected by dentists in private practice. Statements regarding the effectiveness of visual examination of the oral cavity for early detection are not necessarily transferable between different health care systems. Our clinical-epidemiological and methodological aim was thus to conduct a prospective regional study in dental practices under everyday conditions, assess the frequency and type of oral mucosal changes, and evaluate the dental examination methodology. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted,
