Highly feasible procedure for laparoscopic transplantation of cell sheets under pneumoperitoneum in porcine model.

INTRODUCTION: Cell sheet technology is one of the most successful methodologies in regenerative medicine. Various applications of cell sheets have been introduced in first-in-human studies in several clinical fields. When transplanting a cell sheet into internal organs, a relatively large incision is required for delivery due to difficulty handling the sheet. We developed a laparoscopic delivery procedure for safe and easy transplantation of cell sheets in a porcine model. METHODS: Pneumoperitoneum was established by inflation with CO2. First, to increase the strength during handling, fibrin

Role of plasminogen activators in peritoneal adhesion formation.

Intra-abdominal adhesion formation is a major complication of serosal repair following surgery, ischaemia or infection, leading to conditions such as intestinal obstruction and infertility. It has been proposed that the persistence of fibrin, due to impaired plasminogen activator activity, results in the formation of adhesions between damaged serosal surfaces. This study aimed to assess the role of fibrinolysis in adhesion formation using mice deficient in either of the plasminogen activator proteases, tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) or urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA). We hy

Prophylactic percutaneous sealing of lumbar postdural puncture hole with fibrin glue to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leakage in swine.

UNLABELLED: We explored the effect of fibrin glue injection at the site of dural puncture on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage in a swine model. Pigs were subjected to a lumbar dural CSF puncture in the sitting position with a 17-gauge Tuohy needle. Fibrin glue 1.4 mL was injected through the same needle into the epidural space. Evans blue dye was infused through the cisterna magna 15 min later, and the appearance of dyed CSF through the skin puncture and along the needle trajectory to the dura was inspected and categorized. In seven of eight animals, the CSF leak was sealed with fibrin glue.

[Expert consensus on embolization and sclerotherapy with fibrin glue combined with pingyangmycin for oral and maxillofacial vascular malformations].

Venous malformations(VMs) are common vascular anomalies in the oral and maxillofacial region, which can cause facial deformities, craniomaxillofacial dysfunction and psychosocial stress in patients. Currently, the treatment of extensive, high-reflux venous malformations and high-flow arteriovenous malformations(AVMs) remains challenging. Fibrin glue combined with pingyangmycin or bleomycin embolosclerotherapy technology treats vascular malformations via the mechanism of immediate embolization, sustained drug release and synergistic fibrosis. Existing real-world research data have demonstrated

A comparative study of conventional intermarginal split lamella with labial mucous membrane graft versus sutureless procedure using fibrin sealant to manage major trichiasis.

OBJECTIVE: In the intermarginal split lamella with labial mucous membrane graft procedure to manage major trichiasis, the graft is usually sutured in the receptor bed using 6-0 polyglactin sutures. We aimed to compare the use of fibrin sealant to seal the graft to the receptor bed versus the conventional technique using sutures. METHODS: This is a retrospective comparative study of patients who underwent conventional intermarginal split lamella with labial mucous membrane graft or sutureless procedure using fibrin sealant (Tisseel, Baxter Healthcare Corp) between 2016 and 2021. Etiology of th

Adjunctive procedures to neck rejuvenation.

Rejuvenation of the neck often requires more than just a neck lift. Various steps and procedures exist to enhance the surgical technique or overall result. Fibrin sealants can be used to improve the recovery process and obviate the need for drain placement. Chin augmentation can be a critical part of creating a more refined neckline. Submandibular gland excision has been put forth as helpful to the overall aesthetic result. A low and anteriorly positioned hyoid bone creates an unattractive neckline that is difficult to treat. This article focuses on techniques beyond lifting and resurfacing th

Treatment of fistulas in ano with fibrin glue.

BACKGROUND: Recent publications show promising results using fibrin glue in the treatment of anal fistulas. The technique is simple, repeatable, with minor surgical trauma so that sphincter function is preserved and further treatment options are not compromised. The aim of this pilot study was to analyse if we could reproduce the results reported in the literature, using this simple technique. METHODS: Patients with a primary or recurrent anal fistula were included in this trial. Patients with a complex fistula were excluded. Under general or spinal anaesthesia, the fistulas were curetted and

Low thrombin tissue sealant ARTISS (Baxter), in complex primary closure after Fournier's gangrene.

The following case report describes the reconstruction of Fournier's gangrene (FG) which failed initial conventional primary closure due to issues with wound edge friability, large dead spaces, and significant tension and shearing forces created by excess adipose tissue in the patient's groin. In the first reported case that could be found in the literature ARTISS (Baxter), a low thrombin concentration fibrin sealant was used as a tissue adhesive to close the large post FG debridement wound flaps and ensure enough working time to allow for precise wound edge approximation. Employing Artiss in

Autologous platelets as a source of proteins for healing and tissue regeneration.

Platelets are known for their role in haemostasis where they help prevent blood loss at sites of vascular injury. To do this, they adhere, aggregate and form a procoagulant surface leading to thrombin generation and fibrin formation. Platelets also release substances that promote tissue repair and influence the reactivity of vascular and other blood cells in angiogenesis and inflammation. They contain storage pools of growth factors including PDGF, TGF-beta?and VEGF as well as cytokines including proteins such as PF4 and CD40L. Chemokines and newly synthesised active metabolites are also relea

Injectable, self-healing hydrogel adhesives with firm tissue adhesion and on-demand biodegradation for sutureless wound closure.

Tissue adhesives have garnered extensive interest as alternatives and supplements to sutures, whereas major challenges still remain, including weak tissue adhesion, inadequate biocompatibility, and uncontrolled biodegradation. Here, injectable and biocompatible hydrogel adhesives are developed via catalyst-free o-phthalaldehyde/amine (hydrazide) cross-linking reaction. The hydrogels demonstrate rapid and firm adhesion to various tissues, and an o-phthalaldehyde-mediated tissue adhesion mechanism is established. The hydrogel adhesives show controlled degradation profiles of 6 to 22 weeks in viv
