Clinical and laboratory characteristics of hepatitis d in Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

OBJECTIVE: Inrtroduction: The epidemiological situation for hepatitis D has changed significantly. Reduced population authors infection due to a sharp decline in hospitalizations from Central Asia regions, the Caucasus and Moldova, which are known to be endemic for hepatitis D. Currently, the incidence of chronic hepatitis D (HGD) in Russia is 1%, while in the countries of Central Asia, and in particular in Turkmenistan, the share of HGD among chronic viral hepatitis is 8%. The aim of research was to establish the clinical features, depending on the activity of the replication of hepatitis vir

Recurrent Hepatitis B and D Virus Infection in a Liver Transplant Recipient.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) co-infections progress rapidly and lead to cirrhosis. In Japan, the prevalence of HBV and HDV co-infected patients is low. Therefore, there are few reports of patients with HBV and HDV co-infection having undergone liver transplantation. Herein, we report a rare case of recurrence of HBV and HDV in a 41-year-old man who underwent living donor liver transplantation 4 years prior.

Classical and emerging roles of vitamin D in hepatitis C virus infection.

According to the Institute of Medicine, the risk of clinically significant vitamin D deficiency increases at 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL. By this standard, most cirrhotic hepatitis C virus- (HCV-) positive patients and many noncirrhotic patients are vitamin D-deficient. The high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among HCV patients is a cause for concern for several specific reasons. Classic studies established the importance of vitamin D and calcium in maintaining bone. Vitamin D's beneficial effects on bone are likely to be vital for HCV-infected patients because these individu

Vitamin D supplementation improves response to antiviral treatment for recurrent hepatitis C.

In immune-competent patients, higher vitamin D levels predicted sustained viral response (SVR) following interferon (INF) and ribavirin therapy for chronic hepatitis C. This study aimed to verify the influence of vitamin D serum levels and/or vitamin D supplementation in predicting SVR rates for recurrent hepatitis C (RHC). Forty-two consecutive patients were treated for RHC with combination therapy with INF-α and ribavirin for 48 weeks. Vitamin D serum levels were measured in all patients before antiviral therapy. In 15 patients oral vitamin D3 supplementation was administered to avoid furthe

Tracing the history of hepatitis B virus genotype D in western Japan.

The major hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes in Japan are B and C. HBV genotype D (HBV/D), however, is widespread in a small area of Western Japan, where the Gianotti-Crosti syndrome caused by HBV subtype ayw, which is suspected to be HBV/D, was endemic in the 1970s. The aim of the study was to elucidate its origin, time of transmission, and spread in this area. Genotyping of HBV-DNA was done in 363 patients with HBV infection. The year of birth was checked in patients with HBV/D. The full genome sequences of 20 HBV/D strains, 2 of which were obtained from a single carrier with a 19-year-interv

Lack of evidence of hepatitis D (delta) infection in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Epidemiologic knowledge of hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is limited. A seroepidemiologic study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of the infection in Newfoundland and Labrador. Between October 1983 and October 1985 over 200 people were recognized through routine serodiagnosis and screening as having hepatitis B seromarkers. A total of 223 serum samples from 186 of these people were tested for anti-HDV. The subjects were mainly asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen or patients with acute or chronic hepatitis B from the native Indian and Inuit and the non-native popula

Seroprevalence of hepatitis D virus infection among hepatitis B virus-infected patients attending UPUMS, Saifai: A cross-sectional study.

CONTEXT: HDV is a defective RNA virus that requires HBV for the replication; therefore, HDV can only get transmitted to the people who also have HBV infection and lead severe liver disease. Globally, the geographical distribution of HDV infection among HBV-positive people is very heterogeneous. In India, limited data are available on prevalence of HDV among hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive patients. In our state, Uttar Pradesh, or region, there is lack of data on seroprevalence of HDV infection. AIM: The aim of our study was to determine the seroprevalence of HDV infection among H

Hepatitis D double reflex testing of all hepatitis B carriers in low-HBV- and high-HBV/HDV-prevalence countries.

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection occurs as a coinfection with hepatitis B and increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, decompensated cirrhosis, and mortality compared to hepatitis B virus (HBV) monoinfection. Reliable estimates of the prevalence of HDV infection and disease burden are essential to formulate strategies to find coinfected individuals more effectively and efficiently. The global prevalence of HBV infections was estimated to be 262,240,000 in 2021. Only 1,994,000 of the HBV infections were newly diagnosed in 2021, with more than half of the new diagnoses made in China. Our

A Review of the Systemic Manifestations of Hepatitis B Virus Infection, Hepatitis D Virus, Hepatocellular Carcinoma, and Emerging Therapies.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection affects about 262 million people worldwide, leading to over 820,000 deaths each year primarily due to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The World Health Organization has pledged to eliminate HBV as a health threat by 2030, but currently, no countries are on track to achieve this goal. One of the barriers to HBV elimination is stigma, causing shame, denial, self-isolation, self-rejection, and depression leading to those with chronic HBV less likely to get tested or seek treatment and more likely to conceal their infection. Other barriers include l

Hepatitis B virus and hepatitis D virus in blood donors from Argentina: circulation of HBsAg and reverse transcriptase mutants.

In Argentina, current procedures to ensure the safety of the blood supply for transfusion include the serologic detection of specific blood-borne infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and the genetic diversity of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) in blood donor populations from two distantly located Argentine regions. Data from 56,983 blood donations from the Favaloro Foundation, in the city of Buenos Aires (Central Region), and the Central Blood Bank of Misiones Province (Northeast Region) were analyzed. Samples that were reactive for HBsAg were an

Comparison of clinico-pathological features in hepatitis B virus-associated hepatocellular carcinoma with or without hepatitis D virus superinfection.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hepatitis D virus superinfection in hepatitis B virus carriers produces additional damage in an already injured liver. Earlier reports noted that the development of hepatocellular carcinoma may be accelerated in hepatitis D virus-superinfected patients. This study aimed to investigate the impact of hepatitis D virus on the clinical course of hepatitis B virus-associated hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: A total of 42 consecutive hepatocellular carcinoma cases seropositive for antibody against hepatitis D virus antigen (anti-HDV) were found from 1986 to 1994; the clinical man

An Insight Into the Factors Affecting the Prevalence and Natural History of Hepatitis D.

Epidemiological studies and recent metanalyses addressing hepatitis D have reported a wide variation in the prevalence of the disease. Between 4.5% to 15% of all hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive patients are thought to harbor the hepatitis D virus. The emergent variation in prevalence can be attributed to several factors. Unsurprisingly, published literature shows that the prevalence of the disease is higher in areas where aggregate viral hepatitis infections are endemic and amongst groups with high-risk practices facilitating the horizontal transfer. Meanwhile, the natural history

A novel toolbox for the in vitro assay of hepatitis D virus infection.

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a defective RNA virus that requires the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) for its life cycle. The in vitro HDV infection system is widely used as a surrogate model to study cellular infection with both viruses owing to its practical feasibility. However, previous methods for running this system were less efficient for high-throughput screening and large-scale studies. Here, we developed a novel method for the production of infectious HDV by adenoviral vector (AdV)-mediated transduction. We demonstrated that the AdV-based method yields 10-fold higher viral titers th

Pharmacokinetics of glycyrrhizin in rats with D-galactosamine-induced hepatic disease.

The pharmacokinetic behavior of glycyrrhizin (GZ) was examined in D-galactosamine-intoxicated (GAL) rats. When GZ was administered intravenously, the apparent volume of distribution (Vdss) and the total body clearance (CLtotal) were more significantly decreased in GAL rats than those in normal rats. When GZ was administered orally, the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC), the mean residence time (MRT) and the time to reach the maximum plasma concentration (Tmax) for GZ were higher, but the maximum plasma concentration (Cpmax) in GAL rats was lower than that in normal rats. Influence of the vitamin D hormonal status on the hepatic response to bromobenzene.

Hypocalcemic vitamin D-depleted rats received either 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] or calcium p.o. in order to study the effects of plasma calcium normalization, resulting from hormone or dietary calcium administration, on the hepatic response to bromobenzene (BB). Results showed that 1,25(OH)2D3 administration induced a rise in the circulating aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and sorbitol dehydrogenase after BB administration significantly greater than in unsupplemented rats. The volumic density of necrosis was not, however, increased by 1,25(OH)2D3 whereas the p
