A three-dimensional biomodel of type A aortic dissection for endovascular interventions.

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair is widely used for type B aortic dissection. However, there is no favorable stent-graft for type A aortic dissection. A significant limitation for device development is the lack of an experimental model for type A aortic dissection. We developed a novel three-dimensional biomodel of type A aortic dissection for endovascular interventions. Based on Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine data from the computed tomography image of a patient with a type A aortic dissection, a three-dimensional biomodel with a true lumen, a false lumen, and an entry tear l

Changes in the dimensions of milled mandibular models after mandibular sagittal split osteotomies.

Three-dimensional models created by milling machines and stereolithography from the three-dimensional computed tomograms (CTs) have become important in the diagnosis and preoperative planning of some craniomaxillofacial irregularities. In this study three-dimensional milled models were used to verify operative results after patients had undergone bilateral sagittal split osteotomies of the mandible. Fifteen models of patients with mandibular prognathism and 31 with retrognathism were created preoperatively and 6 weeks postoperatively to examine the changes of the osseous anatomical structures

Agomelatine 3D-printed microneedles as a potential drug delivery system for the treatment of depression.

Microneedles (MNs) are small devices that help to overcome the skin barrier and, thus, increase the effectiveness of transdermal drug delivery. This approach could be beneficial, especially for drugs characterised by low oral bioavailability, such as the antidepressant agomelatine (AGM), which is now only available on the market as an oral tablet. The aim of this study was to obtain agomelatine-loaded microneedle systems for potential use in the treatment of depression, using the 3D-printing methods. 3D-printing is an emerging technology enabling the manufacture of drug dosage forms or devices

Genomic Deletion of P-Glycoprotein from Gliomas Via the Focused Ultrasound-Delivery of a Duplex CRISPR Cas9 Ribonucleoprotein System.

3D printing offers advantages and novel opportunities for the analytical chemistry laboratory. The method presented here used 3D printed materials as the substrates for electrochemiluminescent sensors and used 3D printing to construct a portable housing for the sensors that not only aligns the sensor to the detector but provides a light-tight environment for the luminescence measurement. This work evaluated four different 3D-printed plastics as substrate materials for sensors fabricated from stencil-printed carbon-ink electrodes (SPCE's). SPCE chips were fabricated that incorporated an electro

Combining 3D printing with OSL dosimeters for extremity monitoring according to ICRU 95 operational quantity.

The International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) has recently proposed on its Report 95 a new set of operational quantities for personal and area monitoring. The definition of such quantities is then greatly simplified by adopting the same phantoms already in use to calculate Protection quantities. However, the existing conversion coefficients between these kerma and the operational quantities changes, causing current personal dosimeters to be directly affected as well. Therefore, it is needed for dosimeters to evolve in order to handle changes in their energy dependence

In Vitro Testing and Comparison of Additively Manufactured Polymer Impellers for the CentriMag Blood Pump.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is an effective tool for accelerating knowledge gain in development processes, as it enables the production of complex prototypes at low cost and with short lead times. In the development of mechanical circulatory support, the use of cheap polymer-based AM techniques for prototype manufacturing allows more design variations to be tested, promoting a better understanding of the respective system and its optimization parameters. Here, we compare four commonly used AM processes for polymers with respect to manufacturing accuracy, surface roughness, and shape fidelity i

Development of a new three-dimensional cranial imaging system.

The development of a new three-dimensional (3D) imaging system designed to obtain a digital image of an infant's cranium is described. This system is intended to replace the manual plaster-casting technique currently used during the process of fabricating cranial remodeling bands. The system uses 18 triangulated digital cameras and the projection of random infrared patterns to capture a 360 degrees image of an infant's cranium instantaneously, including the face and top of the head. Accuracy was calculated by comparing models digitized with this system with the same models digitized with high-

Stereolithographic modelling as an aid to orbital brachytherapy.

PURPOSE: This paper describes the technique of stereolithographic biomodelling and its application to a patient who was treated using orbital brachytherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The process uses a moving laser beam, directed by a computer, to draw cross-sections of the model onto the surface of photo-curable liquid plastic. Using a stereolithographic apparatus (SLA), solid or surface data is sliced by software into very thin cross-sections. A helium cadmium (HeCd) laser then generates a small intense spot of ultraviolet (UV) light that is moved across the top of a vat of liquid photo monome

New evidence from Le Moustier 1: computer-assisted reconstruction and morphometry of the skull.

In this study, we present a new computerized reconstruction of the Le Moustier 1 Neanderthal skull and discuss its significance for Neanderthal growth and variability. Because of the precarious state of preservation of the original material, we applied entirely noninvasive methods of fossil reconstruction and morphometry, using a combination of computed tomography, computer graphics, and stereolithography. After electronic restoration, the isolated original pieces were recomposed on the computer screen using external and internal anatomical clues to position the bone fragments and mirror image

3D-printed solid-contact chloride sensor for sweat-based cystic fibrosis screening.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder marked by impaired chloride transport, with elevated sweat chloride concentration serving as the primary diagnostic biomarker. Here, we report a 3D-printed chloride-selective ion-selective electrode (3Dp-Cl--ISE) for sweat chloride analysis relevant to CF screening. This work introduces a solvent-free, 3D-printed solid-contact chloride ISE that integrates a photocurable non-polyvinyl chloride selective membrane with a carbon-cloth transducer. The sensor combines a stereolithography (SLA)-printed membrane with a porous, hydrophobic carbon cloth substra
