Bone morphology of the femur and tibia captured by statistical shape modelling predicts rapid bone loss in acute spinal cord injury patients.

After spinal cord injury (SCI), bone loss in the paralysed limbs progresses at variable rates. Decreases in bone mineral density (BMD) in the first year range from 1% (slow) to 40% (rapid). In chronic SCI, fragility fractures commonly occur around the knee, with significant associated morbidity. Osteoporosis treatments await full evaluation in SCI, but should be initiated early and targeted towards patients exhibiting rapid bone loss. The potential to predict rapid bone loss from a single bone scan within weeks of a SCI was investigated using statistical shape modelling (SSM) of bone morpholog

Three-dimensional electromagnetic navigation vs. fluoroscopy for endovascular aneurysm repair: a prospective feasibility study in patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the in vivo feasibility of a 3-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic (EM) navigation system with electromagnetically-tracked catheters in endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). METHODS: The pilot study included 17 patients undergoing EVAR with a bifurcated stent-graft. Ten patients were assigned to the control group, in which a standard EVAR procedure was used. The remaining 7 patients (intervention group) underwent an EVAR procedure during which a cone-beam computed tomography image was acquired after implantation of the main stent-graft. The 3D image was presented on the navig

Medical imaging and radiographic analysis of the rheumatoid patient.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, approximately 1.3 million Americans have rheumatoid arthritis (RA), while an estimated 300,000 children are diagnosed with the disease each year. The disease is 2- to 4-times more common in women than in men and is least common in young men. Current practices in the treatment of RA center on the early detection of the various disease manifestations, specifically joint destruction. The goal of early detection is the implementation of disease-modifying drugs before articular destruction and deformity set in. Advancements in medical imaging have led to metho

Can computer-assisted surgery reduce the effective dose for spinal fusion and sacroiliac screw insertion?

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of fluoroscopy-based surgical procedures and the associated exposure to radiation raise questions regarding potential risks for patients and operating room personnel. Computer-assisted technologies can help to reduce the emission of radiation; the effect on the patient's dose for the three-dimensional (3-D)-based technologies has not yet been evaluated. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We determined the effective and organ dose in dorsal spinal fusion and percutaneous transsacral screw stabilization during conventional fluoroscopy-assisted and computer-navigated procedures.

Are artificial intelligence generated lower extremity radiographic measurements accurate in a cohort with implants?

OBJECTIVE: Leg length discrepancy (LLD) and malalignment of the lower extremity can lead to pain and increased risk of osteoarthritis. Radiographic measurements on anteroposterior (AP) full-length radiographs can be used to assess LLD and lower extremity alignment. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of AI software in performing lower extremity radiographic measurements in patients with implants. The secondary aim was to compare its efficiency to that of radiologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study used the following eight angles and five lengths: hip-knee-angle (HKA

Deep learning-based segmentation of the thorax in mouse micro-CT scans.

For image-guided small animal irradiations, the whole workflow of imaging, organ contouring, irradiation planning, and delivery is typically performed in a single session requiring continuous administration of anaesthetic agents. Automating contouring leads to a faster workflow, which limits exposure to anaesthesia and thereby, reducing its impact on experimental results and on animal wellbeing. Here, we trained the 2D and 3D U-Net architectures of no-new-Net (nnU-Net) for autocontouring of the thorax in mouse micro-CT images. We trained the models only on native CTs and evaluated their perfor

Automated measurement of the arteriolar-to-venular width ratio in digital color fundus photographs.

A decreased ratio of the width of retinal arteries to veins [arteriolar-to-venular diameter ratio (AVR)], is well established as predictive of cerebral atrophy, stroke and other cardiovascular events in adults. Tortuous and dilated arteries and veins, as well as decreased AVR are also markers for plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity. This work presents an automated method to estimate the AVR in retinal color images by detecting the location of the optic disc, determining an appropriate region of interest (ROI), classifying vessels as arteries or veins, estimating vessel widths, and calcu

Atlanto-occipital dislocation--part 2: The clinical use of (occipital) condyle-C1 interval, comparison with other diagnostic methods, and the manifestation, management, and outcome of atlanto-occipital dislocation in children.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of atlanto-occipital dislocation (AOD) remains problematic as a result of a lack of reliable radiodiagnostic criteria. In Part 1 of the AOD series, we showed that the normal occiput-C1 joint in children has an extremely narrow joint gap (condyle-C1 interval [CCI]) with great left-right symmetry. In Part 2, we used a CCI of 4 mm or greater measured on reformatted computed tomographic (CT) scans as the indicator for AOD and tested the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of CCI against published criteria. The clinical manifestation, neuroimaging findings, management, a

A novel automatic suspicious mass regions identification using Havrda & Charvat entropy and Otsu's N thresholding.

Mass detection is a very important process for breast cancer diagnosis and computer aided systems. It can be very complex when the mass is small or invisible because of dense breast tissue. Therefore, the extraction of suspicious mass region can be very challenging. This paper proposes a novel segmentation algorithm to identify mass candidate regions in mammograms. The proposed system includes three parts: breast region and pectoral muscle segmentation, image enhancement and suspicious mass regions identification. The first two parts have been examined in previous studies. In this study, we fo
