Comparison of the Distribution of Lenticule Decentration Following SMILE by Subjective Patient Fixation or Triple Marking Centration.

PURPOSE: To investigate lenticule decentration following small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) via the subjective patient fixation method or triple marking centration method and compare inductions of corneal higher order aberrations (HOAs) between the two methods. METHODS: This study analyzed decentration values obtained from the Keratron Scout (Optikon, Rome, Italy) tangential topography difference map of 110 eyes (110 patients) undergoing SMILE with the subjective patient fixation method (n = 55) or triple marking centration method (n = 55). Root mean square values of total HOAs, 3rd

One-year refractive results, contrast sensitivity, high-order aberrations and complications after myopic small-incision lenticule extraction (ReLEx SMILE).

BACKGROUND: To report one year results of the first cohort of routine refractive lenticule extraction through a small incision (ReLEx SMILE) for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. METHODS: Fifty-four eyes of 27 patients with spherical equivalent of -4.68 ± 1.29D who underwent routine ReLEx SMILE by a single surgeon were prospectively followed-up for 1 year. We used the VisuMax femtosecond laser system (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany) with a 500 kHz repetition rate. Folow-up intervals were at 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. We obtained following parameters: uncor

Femtosecond laser-assisted lamellar keratoplasty (FSLK) for anterior corneal stromal diseases.

Our objective was to study the outcome of femtosecond-assisted lamellar keratoplasty (FSLK) in stromal corneal diseases. This is a retrospective chart review of 17 patients (20 eyes) who underwent FSLK for anterior corneal pathologies. Main outcome measures were refractive results following FSLK, complications, and graft survival. Mean follow-up time was 42 ± 15 (7-58) months. Preoperative best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) was ≤20/40 in 17 eyes. Postoperative BSCVA ≥ 20/40 was achieved in 12/14 at 12 months, 11/12 at 24 months, and 10/12 eyes at 36 months; postoperative BSCVA ≥ 20

Assessment of tear osmolarity and other dry eye parameters in post-LASIK eyes.

PURPOSES: To assess the tear osmolarity using the TearLab device after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and to compare the values with those obtained by traditional tear film tests before and after the procedure. METHODS: Thirty eyes of 15 refractive surgery candidates (5 men and 10 women of mean age: 30.55 ± 11.79 years) were examined. Using a special questionnaire (Ocular Surface Disease Index), subjective dry eye complaints were evaluated, and then, the tear osmolarity was measured with the TearLab system (TearLab Corporation) and conventional dry eye tests were carried out. Protective effect of LASIK flap in penetrating keratoplasty following blunt trauma.

Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) often results in large and unpredictable refractive errors following suture removal in the postoperative period. Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is an effective means of correcting these errors. However, LASIK following PKP is believed to further weaken an already weak graft-host junction and may predispose such eyes to traumatic dehiscence of the graft-host junction. We describe a case in which the LASIK surgery following PKP seemed to benefit the patient by preventing complete dehiscence of the graft-host junction.

Effect of the Learning Curve on Visual and Refractive Outcomes of Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of the learning curve for small-incision lenticule extraction during the first 2 years of experience. METHODS: Small-incision lenticule extraction was performed using the 500-kHz VisuMax femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec) by the same surgeon. The initial 100 patients since the surgeon started operating independently were considered as group 1; the recent 100 patients were considered as group 2. The same laser settings and technique were used. The visual and refractive outcomes were compared between groups at postoperative 1 week and 6 months. Vector anal

Multistage approach to uveitic cataract management in children.

Phototherapeutic keratectomy, cataract extraction and hydrophobic acrylic lens implantation, Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, glaucoma valve implantation, and intravitreal steroid injections resulted in substantial visual improvement in three eyes of two children with complicated cataract due to severe uveitis. At follow-up of 6 months to 4 years, the children had clear corneas and normal intraocular pressures.

New screening methods for donor eye-bank eyes.

PURPOSE: Current methods of screening donor eyes for corneal transplantation are not always effective in excluding corneas with abnormal topography. We used the Orbscan to determine whether corneal-thickness maps could be used as a technique for donor tissue screening. METHODS: Forty eye-bank eyes were measured with the Orbscan, and a corneal-thickness map was generated. Average central pachymetry measurements from each map were compared with the thinnest midperipheral thickness reading. Two eyes from a donor who had photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and two eyes from a donor with keratoconus
