OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of phacoemulsification on the macula following uncomplicated phacoemulsification by optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: Eighty eyes of the senile cataract were chosen randomly. The uncomplicated phacoemulsification was performed. OCT was examined preoperatively and 1 week after the surgery. Preoperative visual acuity, the retinal thickness and phaco power were compared with those after surgery.
RESULTS: In 80 eyes, the preoperative mean foveal thickness was (142.9 +/- 16.7) micrometer and the postoperative (157.9 +/- 36.7) micrometer, the differ…

OBJECTIVE: The accumulated energy complex parameter [AECP, AECP = actual power (AP) x time (T)] was put forward and used to analyze the correlation between phacoemulsification energy and postoperative complication.
METHODS: Ninety-two cases with senile cataract who underwent phacoemulsification were observed. The correlation between AECP and postoperative corneal edema rate (CER) was analyzed. The difference of AECP between the method of divided-conque and that of epi-capsular rotated-chipping was compared for the same hard nucleus (IV) cataract extraction.
RESULTS: The positive correlation …

PURPOSE: To evaluate factors influencing early post surgical ocular hypertension after phacoemulsification.
METHODS: Records were collected for patients who had uncomplicated phacoemulsification with IOL implantation in the bag. Aspiration of the viscoelastic was performed at the conclusion of surgery. Patients with previous ocular surgery, high myopia, or glaucoma were excluded. Intraocular pressures were measured at six hours (+/-2) postoperatively. Following factors were analysed
RESULTS: 26% of the patients had an ocular pressure equal or higher than 21 mmHg. Among the factors we analyse…

PURPOSE: To perform a comparative evaluation of phaco-chop versus stop-and-chop nucleotomy techniques of phacoemulsification.
SETTING: Dr. Rajendra Prasad Center for Ophthalmic Sciences, New Delhi, India.
METHODS: Forty eyes of 40 patients with immature senile cataract were included in the study. Twenty eyes each were randomly assigned to have phaco-chop (Group 1) or stop-and-chop (Group 2) nucleotomy during phacoemulsification. The main parameters were corneal endothelial count, effective phaco time, volume of infusion fluid used, central corneal pachymetry, best corrected visual acuity (BC…

Three patients had a pars plana vitrectomy to remove retained nuclei within 72 hours after phacoemulsification performed by a surgeon making the transition from extra-capsular cataract extraction to phacoemulsification. After vitrectomy, the nuclei were brought to the midvitreous cavity from the retinal surface with a posterior segment phacofragmenter, emulsified, and completely removed. Then, a posterior chamber intraocular lens was implanted in the sulcus through the previous cataract surgery incision and remained well centered postoperatively. Postoperative complications included cystoid ma…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The endothelial cell count after phacoemulsification serves as a sensitive indicator for the level of corneal damage caused by different phacoemulsification techniques.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a prospective and randomized study, the "Reversed Tip and Snip" technique and the "Divide and Conquer" technique were performed in groups of 30 patients each. The corneal endothelial cell count was measured preoperatively as well as 4 weeks and 3 months postoperatively.
RESULTS: The endothelial cell count showed significant (P < .001) reduction by approximately 10% after the …

Two patients developed cataract following iridocyclectomy for iris melanoma invading the angle. Although several clock hours of zonular fibers had been surgically resected, the use of a continuous, circular capsulorhexis followed by phacoemulsification maintained the integrity of the anterior capsular margin and allowed for stable "in-the-bag" placement of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL). Continuous, circular capsulorhexis is the optimal anterior capsulectomy procedure, minimizing the incidence of radial tears and the risk of subsequent PC-IOL decentration.

Abnormal intraocular pressure (IOP), either transient or permanent, may follow extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) with phacoemulsification (PE) and posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) implantation. We retrospectively studied IOP measurements at different intervals post ECCE and PE in 242 eyes of 211 patients: 105 males, 106 females, 198 Caucasians and 13 blacks. Elevated IOP (greater than 23 mm Hg) was observed in 20 eyes (8.2%). Only two patients (0.8%) had persistent (greater than 3 months) IOP elevation and needed antiglaucoma therapy. Six more eyes (2.5%), however, developed …

Endothelial cell loss following posterior chamber phacoemulsification with and without posterior chamber lens implantation was studied. Postoperative cell counts were taken four months after surgery. Three surgeons participated in this study. Posterior chamber phacoemulsification alone (30 patients) resulted in a mean cell loss of 9%, with a maximum cell loss of 22% in one patient. Posterior chamber phacoemulsification with posterior chamber lens implantation (30 patients) resulted in a mean cell loss of 8% with a maximum cell loss of 26% in one patient. Statistical analysis shows no differenc…

Each participant underwent a comprehensive ocular examination, including refraction and keratometry readings (k-readings) obtained using an automated keratometer on the IOL Master. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and quality of healing of main corneal incisions in femtosecond laser procedures in cataract surgery.
METHODS: It was a prospective, non-randomized, investigator-masked study. A total of 37 eyes of 37 patients with indication for cataract surgery were separated into two groups in this prospective, nonrandomized study: Femto group, with incisions automated by femtosecond laser (18 eyes), and Phaco group, with incisions made using a keratome (19 eyes). The planned incisions were 2.2 mm wide and 1.65 mm long. The length of the incision and preva

Suprachoroidal hemorrhage (SCH) is a rare and sight-threatening complication of various intraocular surgeries, including cataract surgery. Although the rate of SCH complicating cataract surgery has decreased in the era of phacoemulsification, most likely due to smaller self-sealing incisions and modern equipment, it remains a challenging complication to manage. The aim of this review is to summarize the current evidence of the pathophysiology and management of SCH complicating phaco surgery. A literature review was performed using the PubMed database searching for diagnosis, therapy, and manag…

PURPOSE: To study the changes in morphometric parameters of the anterior segment of anatomically short eyes with an increased risk of acute glaucoma attack before and after preventative PE.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 70 patients (70 eyes) with a high risk of acute glaucoma attack in short anatomical axial length and thickened lens,…
