Do measures of social support and social distress share general factors associated with suicidal ideation and attempts?

INTRODUCTION: Aspects of social relationships have variably been associated with suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SAs). This study assessed whether social support and social distress measures have general factors versus measure-specific factors that are associated with suicide risk. METHODS: Adults (N = 455, 60.0% female), admitted to psychiatric inpatient units following a recent suicide attempt or active SI, completed assessments of social support (emotional support, instrumental support, friendship, perceived support from significant others, friends, family) and social distress…

Gender differences in relations between social comparison, social support, and sleep disturbance among midlife and older adults.

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between sleep disturbance, social support, and social comparison among midlife and older adults, including the moderating role of gender. METHODS: Adults ages ≥40 years (N = 557, MAge = 57, 53% men) completed a cross-sectional survey including validated measures of sleep disturbance, perceptions of social support, and social comparison orientation. RESULTS: Sleep disturbance was negatively associated with social support (rs = -0.42 to - 0.33, ps = 0.001) and associations were stronger for men than women - particularly perceived support from friends (η 2  = …

Lonely children and adolescents are less healthy and report less social support: A study on the effect of loneliness on mental health and the moderating role of social support.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness among children and adolescents has been increasingly recognized as a public health issue, for example, because of its associations with mental health problems. Nevertheless, there is a lack of evidence regarding the links between loneliness and mental health and the potential buffering role of social support. Thus, this study aims to investigate the prevalence of loneliness among children and adolescents in Germany and its associations with mental health. Furthermore, we analyze whether social support is negatively correlated with loneliness and mental health problems an…

Exploring relationships between college students' social networks, social support, and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study investigates the relationship between college students' social networks, social support, and mental health in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using data from a large public research university, the research explores the associations between perceived social support from friends, family, and significant others, social network characteristics, and their individual and combined association with mental distress. By applying Social Capital Theory and Relational Regulation Theory, the study highlights the critical role of social interactions and support systems in mitigating mental he…

One-size-fits-all or friend-specific? A social relations model approach to social support in friendships.

When providing support to a friend in need, do we tailor our support to the specific person and situation in front of us? Past work tends to assume that this is the case, but it's possible that people have broader support-giving tendencies that persist regardless of the context. Here, we decomposed sources of social support using the Social Relations Model among close friend groups (N = 328 participants, 87 groups, 522 dyads). We found consistent evidence that social support is both a general tendency and a dynamic process, which destabilizes theorizing of social support as an entirely relatio…

Neighborhood social cohesion and psychological distress among caregiving spouses with or without a nearby social support network.

BACKGROUND: Caregiving spouses often experience substantial physical and emotional strain, placing them at elevated risk for psychological distress. While nearby social support networks and neighborhood social cohesion have each been linked to caregiver well-being, neighborhood social cohesion may serve as a complementary resource, particularly for those without nearby social support. However, little is known about whether the association between neighborhood social cohesion and psychological distress varies depending on the availability of nearby social support among caregiving spouses. METH…

Rethinking social pathways between tuberculosis stigma to treatment outcomes: A gender-stratified mediation analysis of social support.

The mechanisms through which tuberculosis-related stigma (TB-stigma) influences treatment outcomes-and whether pathways differ by gender-remain incompletely understood. Social support (SS) has been proposed to mediate pathways linking TB-stigma to treatment vulnerability, although this assumption has rarely been empirically tested. We evaluated associations between TB-stigma and treatment success, with perceived SS as a mediator. We analyzed data from 620 adults receiving tuberculosis treatment in South Africa. We measured isolation- and disclosure-related stigma using validated scales and ass…

Patterns of Social Participation and Late-Life Depression: The Mediating Role of Social Support and Aging Attitudes.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the engagement patterns of older Chinese adults and their association with depression, including potential mediating roles of social support and aging attitudes, and how they are influenced by urban and rural factors. METHODS: We use latent class analysis to categorized social engagement patterns using national survey data from 5,582 Chinese adults aged over 60. The effect of moderation and mediation was tested by the PROCESS macro (Model 4 and Model 8) for SPSS 27.0 by Hayes, using 5,000 bootstrap samples. RESULTS: Three social engagement patterns were identif…

Using a Social Network Approach to Characterize Oral Health Behavior Social Support Among Mexican-Origin Young Adults.

Using a social network approach, we characterize who Mexican-origin young adults perceive as social support sources for oral health behaviors and provide additional validity evidence for Oral Health Behavior Social Support Scales (OHBSS). From April to September 2022, we gathered social network data from 62 Mexican-origin adults (21-40 years old) through Zoom interviews about their perceived received social support for three oral health behaviors (toothbrushing, flossing, and obtaining dental care) from three potential sources of support (family, health providers, and others/friends). Overall,…

Payment Structures That Support Social Care Integration With Clinical Care: Social Deprivation Indices and Novel Payment Models.

The U.S. lags behind other developed countries in the use of indices and novel reimbursement models to adjust for social determinants of health (SDH) in medicine. This may be due in part to the inadequate body of research regarding outcomes after implementation of healthcare payments designed to address SDH. This perspective article focuses on four models employed both internationally and domestically to outline the implementation, successes, limitations, and research needed to support national application of SDH models. A brief history of prior models is introduced as a primer to the current

Relationship of social support and social burden to repeated breast cancer screening in the women's health initiative.

Direct and interactive effects of social support, social burden (caregiving, negative life events, and social strain), education, and income on repeated use of breast cancer screening among a large (N=55,278), national sample of postmenopausal women participating in the Women's Health Initiative observational study were examined. Repeated screening decreased as emotional/informational support and positive social interactions decreased (ps<.01). Repeated mammography decreased with frequent caregiving (p<.01). Less social strain reduced the frequency of repeated breast self-examinations (BSEs; p…

Mitigating adolescent social anxiety symptoms: the effects of social support and social self-efficacy in findings from the Young-HUNT 3 study.

Adolescents' exposure to negative life events (NLEs) and potentially traumatic events is highly prevalent and increases their risk of developing psychological disorders considerably. NLE exposure has also been linked to the development of social anxiety disorder (SAD) among older children and young adolescents. Despite the relatively low treatment efficacy reported for children and adolescents suffering from SAD, few studies have addressed the extent to which resilience factors, such as social support and social self-efficacy, are associated with SAD symptoms. This study examined whether socia…

Associations of Prenatal Social Support in Adolescent Mothers With Measures of Social-Emotional Development in Their Young Children.

OBJECTIVE: Social environments are essential for supporting social-emotional development in children. However, little consideration has been given to social environments children may be exposed to prior to birth and how this may affect social behavior for both generations postnatally. As such, this study considered the impact of maternal social support during pregnancy on infant and maternal social behaviors in very early childhood. METHODS: Pregnant adolescents from 2009-2012 evaluated their social support and participated in maternal-infant interactions at 4 and 14 months of age to assess m…

An inverse relationship between perceived social support and substance use frequency in socially stigmatized populations.

INTRODUCTION: Social isolation and alcohol and substance use disorders (ASUD) have been identified as global health risks. Social support is protective against developing ASUD and is associated with beneficial addiction treatment outcomes. Socially stigmatized populations are at higher risk of both social isolation and ASUD, and the link between social support and substance use in these populations has been less researched than in general substance-using populations. We hypothesized that perceived social support, as measured by the Social Provisions Scale (SPS), would have an inverse relations…
