Gold Nanowire Sponge Electrochemistry for Permeable Wearable Sweat Analysis Comfortably and Wirelessly.

Electrochemistry-based wearable and wireless sweat analysis is emerging as a promising noninvasive method for real-time health monitoring by tracking chemical and biological markers without the need for invasive blood sampling. It offers the potential to remotely monitor human sweat conditions in relation to metabolic health, stress, and electrolyte balance, which have implications for athletes, patients with chronic conditions, and individuals for the early detection and management of health issues. The state-of-the-art mainstream technology is dominated by the concept of a wearable microflui

Delta Features From Ambient Sensor Data are Good Predictors of Change in Functional Health.

Sensor systems can be deployed in the homes of older adults living alone for functional health assessments. Their information is very useful for health care specialists. The problem lies in developing person independent models while facing a large variability in behavior. We address this problem by, first, proposing a new feature extraction method for data from ambient motion sensors. The method uses functional similarities between houses and daily structure to extract meaningful features. Second, we propose a change-based approach for analyzing data, taking difference scores of both the senso

On-body calibration and measurements using a personal, distributed exposimeter for wireless fidelity.

This paper describes the design, calibration, and measurements with a personal, distributed exposimeter (PDE) for the on-body detection of radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields due to Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) networks. Numerical simulations show that using a combination of two RF nodes placed on the front and back of the body reduces the 50% prediction interval (PI50) on the incident free-space electric-field strength (Equation is included in full-text article.). Median reductions of 10 dB and 9.1 dB are obtained compared to the PI50 of a single antenna placed on the body using a weighte

Metamaterial-enabled battery-free wireless sensor networks for unencumbered human-machine interactions.

Wireless body sensor networks could enable unencumbered human-machine interfaces for robotics, assistive healthcare, and immersive computing. However, their widespread adoption remains constrained by bulky batteries and inefficient wireless communication. Here, we report a battery-free wireless body sensor network enabled by a dual-mode metamaterial textile for continuous and unobtrusive human-machine interactions. The textile, digitally embroidered with liquid-metal fibers, establishes ultra-wideband electromagnetic pathways to simultaneously support efficient near-field power transfer and Bl

Finger pulp-inspired flexible pressure sensor array for gap balance monitoring during total knee arthroplasty.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most effective treatments for end-stage knee osteoarthritis (∼1 million annual surgeries globally), where the biomechanical stability of the implanted prosthesis is crucial for lower limb mechanical axis alignment and postoperative normal gait. Most surgical failures and revisions are caused by intraoperative soft tissue imbalance. It heavily relies on surgeons' experience. Here, we present a wireless digital system featuring an ultrathin finger pulp-inspired flexible pressure sensor array, enabling balance monitoring in the clearance between the tib

Implant-agnostic, handheld wireless robotics: multicenter efficiency and learning curve for total knee arthroplasty.

As robotic total knee arthroplasty (TKA) adoption grows, the learning curve for new users remains a concern for both physicians and staff. Previous studies have reported on clinical outcomes for TKA with a novel implant-agnostic, handheld, wireless robotic TKA system (rTKA). This study investigates the rTKA adoption learning curve relevant to multiple clinical stakeholders. This multicenter, multi-surgeon observational study includes up to the first 25 rTKA procedures by 7 surgeons. Observers noted timing and workflow at 8/25 rTKA cases and 2 standard-of-care benchmark TKAs (prior manual or ro

Wireless, non-invasive, high-resolution thrill sensor for continuous vascular access monitoring of hemodialysis patients.

Hemodialysis is the primary life-sustaining therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Diagnosing and monitoring the health condition of vascular access (VA) for hemodialysis involves the use of ultrasonic imaging and angiography. These infrequent tests cannot, however, identify signs of mild stenosis and sudden onset to facilitate early intervention. Hence, approximately 70% of hemodialysis patients experience VA failure each year, rendering dialysis difficult and posing life-threatening risks. Here, we report wireless, non-invasive thrill sensors incorporating high-resolution

Wireless Magnetoelectric Stimulation Platform Orchestrating Multicellular Coupling in Complex Neurovascularized Tissue Regeneration.

Bone regeneration is a well-orchestrated biological process involving coordinate efforts of multiple cells, cytokines, and signals, among which nerves play a dominant role in regulating osteogenesis. Draw inspiration from the inherent electroactive features of bone and nerve, bioelectric implant providing wireless delivery of electrical stimulation (ES), is an emerging alternative to conventional invasive electrode-based therapy. Herein, we develop a lead-free magnetoelectric (ME) core-shell MnFe2O4@Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (MFO@BCZT) nanoheterostructure-integrated biodegradable 3D-printed hyd

Untethered thin-film neurostimulator wrapped around tiny nerve trunks for wireless neuromodulation.

Electrical stimulation of tiny peripheral nerve trunks for near-organ neuromodulation enables precise electroceutical therapy for refractory diseases, but long-term stable neuromodulation of these delicate, fragile nerve trunks remains an engineering challenge. Here, we report the development of NeuroWrap Ultrasonic Stimulator (NWUS), an untethered, self-adhesive thin-film neurostimulator capable of conformally wrapping around tiny nerve trunks. The untethered architecture can help avoid the damage or rupture of tiny nerves due to uncontrollable micromotion of lead wires during bodily movement

A Wireless Cortical Surface Implant for Diagnosing and Alleviating Parkinson's Disease Symptoms in Freely Moving Animals.

Parkinson's disease (PD), one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases, is involved in motor abnormality, primarily arising from the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. Previous studies have examined the electrotherapeutic effects of PD using various methodological contexts, including live conditions, wireless control, diagnostic/therapeutic aspects, removable interfaces, or biocompatible materials, each of which is separately utilized for testing the diagnosis or alleviation of various brain diseases. Here, a cortical surface implant designed to improve motor function in freely moving

Smart wireless flexible bandage containing drug loaded polycaprolactone microparticles for real-time monitoring and treatment of chronic wounds.

The quality of life is negatively impacted by chronic wounds for more than 25 million people in the US. They are quite prone to infection, which may lead to the eventual loss of a limb. By exposing the ulcers to treatment agents at the appropriate time, the healing rate is increased. On-demand drug release in a closed-loop system will aid us in reaching our goal. In this study, we have developed a platform capable of real-time diagnosis of bacterial infection by wirelessly reading wound pH, as well as slow and on-demand local administration of antibiotics. The drug carrier microparticles, an e

Wireless, battery-free, subdermally implantable platforms for transcranial and long-range optogenetics in freely moving animals.

Wireless, battery-free, and fully subdermally implantable optogenetic tools are poised to transform neurobiological research in freely moving animals. Current-generation wireless devices are sufficiently small, thin, and light for subdermal implantation, offering some advantages over tethered methods for naturalistic behavior. Yet current devices using wireless power delivery require invasive stimulus delivery, penetrating the skull and disrupting the blood-brain barrier. This can cause tissue displacement, neuronal damage, and scarring. Power delivery constraints also sharply curtail operatio

A fully implantable wireless bidirectional neuromodulation system for mice.

Novel research in the field of bioelectronic medicine requires neuromodulation systems that pair high-performance neurostimulation and bio-signal acquisition hardware with advanced signal processing and control algorithms. Although mice are the most commonly used animal in medical research, the size, weight, and power requirements of such bioelectronic systems either preclude use in mice or impose significant constraints on experimental design. Here, a fully-implantable recording and stimulation neuromodulation system suitable for use in mice is presented, measuring 2.2 cm3 and weighing 2.8 g.

Development of a wireless accelerometer-based Intravaginal device to detect pelvic floor motion for evaluation of pelvic floor dysfunction.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is experienced by an estimated 51% of women in the U.S. and often results from impaired function or weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is a frontline nonsurgical treatment, yet a number of symptomatic individuals cannot accurately perform a pelvic floor muscle contraction with simple verbal or written instruction. Long-term adherence to PFMT regimens is often a barrier to resolution of symptoms. Various biofeedback tools have been utilized to aid correct pelvic floor muscle performance and adherence. One novel device, the leva®

Development of a battery-free ultrasonically powered functional electrical stimulator for movement restoration after paralyzing spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is used to restore movements in paretic limbs after severe paralyses resulting from neurological injuries such as spinal cord injury (SCI). Most chronic FES systems utilize an implantable electrical stimulator to deliver a small electric current to the targeted muscle or nerve to stimulate muscle contractions. These implanted stimulators are generally bulky, mainly due to the size of the batteries. Furthermore, these battery-powered stimulators are required to be explanted every few years for battery replacement which may result in surgical f

Non-invasive quantification of human swallowing using a simple motion tracking system.

The number of patients with dysphagia is rapidly increasing due to the ageing of the population. Therefore, the importance of objectively assessing swallowing function has received increasing attention. Videofluoroscopy and videoendoscopy are the standard clinical examinations for dysphagia, but these techniques are not suitable for daily use because of their invasiveness. Here, we aimed to develop a novel, non-invasive method for measuring swallowing function using a motion tracking system, the Kinect v2 sensor. Five males and five females with normal swallowing function participated in this

Axillary Temperature, as Recorded by the iThermonitor WT701, Well Represents Core Temperature in Adults Having Noncardiac Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Core temperature can be accurately measured from the esophagus or nasopharynx during general anesthesia, but neither site is suitable for neuraxial anesthesia. We therefore determined the precision and accuracy of a novel wireless axillary thermometer, the iThermonitor, to determine its suitability for use during neuraxial anesthesia and in other patients who are not intubated. METHODS: We enrolled 80 adults having upper abdominal surgery with endotracheal intubation. Intraoperative core temperature was measured in distal esophagus and was estimated at the axilla with a wireless i

Organ-specific, multimodal, wireless optoelectronics for high-throughput phenotyping of peripheral neural pathways.

The vagus nerve supports diverse autonomic functions and behaviors important for health and survival. To understand how specific components of the vagus contribute to behaviors and long-term physiological effects, it is critical to modulate their activity with anatomical specificity in awake, freely behaving conditions using reliable methods. Here, we introduce an organ-specific scalable, multimodal, wireless optoelectronic device for precise and chronic optogenetic manipulations in vivo. When combined with an advanced, coil-antenna system and a multiplexing strategy for powering 8 individual
