The influence of vascular and periosteal interferences on the histological structure of the growth plates of long bones.

Investigations have been carried out on the histological structure of the growth plates of the rabbit femur following interferences of the vascular blood supply in the metaphysial/diaphysial area and following 3 different types of periosteal division. Trepanation of the cortex had no observable effect on the growth plate. Following the other vascular interferences the reaction of the growth plates was characterised by a total or a partial thickening due to an accumulation of hypertrophic cells followed by a period of regeneration until 40 d p.o. Following periosteal intervention only small dif

Surgical approaches to certain long bones of the horse for application of tension band plates.

In the horse, surgical approaches for plating fractures of the ulna, radius, metacarpus, tibia, and metatarsus involved a single curvilinear skin incision and incision of the superficial fascia in a manner to prevent postoperative dehiscence. The tension side of the bones, as well as location of nerves, arteries, veins, and muscles, were the major determinants in developing these approaches for atraumatic surgery and short operative time.

The "Sandwich" technique using a lateral locking plate and intramedullary reconstruction plate with bone cement for osteoporotic proximal humerus fractures: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Although lateral locking plate fixation is widely used for displaced proximal humerus fractures, fixation failure remains a major concern in elderly osteoporotic patients, particularly when medial column defects are present. Poor cancellous bone quality reduces screw purchase, while medial comminution and metaphyseal bone voids weaken the ability of the proximal humerus to resist varus and axial loading. Existing augmentation methods address only part of this problem. Fibular strut allografts can provide intramedullary and medial support but may be limited by graft availability,

Comparison of Surgical Outcomes and Perioperative Laboratory Parameters Following Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis versus Conventional Plating in Long Bone Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) has been increasingly adopted as an alternative to conventional open reduction and internal fixation due to its potential to preserve soft-tissue integrity and enhance fracture healing. This study aimed to compare surgical outcomes and perioperative laboratory parameters between MIPO and conventional plating. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective comparative study was conducted on 60 patients with long bone fractures, divided equally into MIPO (n = 30) and conventional plating (n = 30) groups. Intraoperative parameters, perioperative

Increased torsional stability by a novel femoral neck locking plate. The role of plate design and pin configuration in a synthetic bone block model.

BACKGROUND: In undisplaced femoral neck fractures, internal fixation remains the main treatment, with mechanical failure as a frequent complication. As torsional stable fixation promotes femoral neck fracture healing, the Hansson Pinloc® System with a plate interlocking pins, was developed from the original hook pins. Since its effect on torsional stability is undocumented, the novel implant was compared with the original configurations. METHODS: Forty-two proximal femur models custom made of two blocks of polyurethane foam were tested. The medial block simulated the cancellous head, while th

Accelerated Bone Induction of Adult Rat Compact Bone Plate Scratched by Ultrasonic Scaler Using Acidic Electrolyzed Water.

Fresh compact bone, the candidate graft material for bone regeneration, is usually grafted for horizontal bone augmentation. However, the dense calcified structure inhibits the release of growth factors and limits cellular and vascular perfusion. We aimed to create mechano-chemically altered dense skull bone by ultrasonic treatment, along with partial demineralization using commercially available acidic electrolyzed water (AEW). The parietal skull bone of an 11-month-old Wistar rat was exposed and continuously treated with a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler tip for 1 min, using AEW (pH 2.3) or

Experimental investigation of ultrasonic assisted coating on three-point bending behavior of 3D printed polymeric bone plates for biomedical applications.

3D printed Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) bone plates exhibit limited three-point bending strength, restricting their viability in biomedical applications. The application of polydopamine (PDM) enhances the three-point bending strength by undergoing covalent interactions with PLA molecular structure. However, the heavy nature of PDM particles leads to settling at the container base at higher coating solution concentrations. This study investigates the impact of ultrasonic-assisted coating parameters on the three-point bending strength. Utilizing Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for statistical model…

Distributions of Microdamage Are Altered Between Trabecular Rods and Plates in Cancellous Bone From Men With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have an increased risk of fragility fracture despite exhibiting normal to high bone mineral density (BMD). Conditions arising from T2DM, such as reduced bone turnover and alterations in microarchitecture, may contribute to skeletal fragility by influencing bone morphology and microdamage accumulation. The objectives of this study were (i) to characterize the effect of T2DM on microdamage quantity and morphology in cancellous bone, and (ii) relate the accumulation of microdamage to the cancellous microarchitecture. Cancellous specimens from the f

Plates made from magnesium alloy with a long period stacking ordered structure promote bone formation in a rabbit fracture model.

Operative treatment is an option for fractures when the fracture is unstable or the patient wishes to return early to daily life or social activities. Metal plates such as titanium and stainless steel are often used in fracture surgery, but the metal plate lacks bone-healing activity and is not bioabsorbable, requiring a second surgery to remove it after bone union. Here we show that a magnesium (Mg) plate made from an alloy of yttrium, zinc, and aluminum with magnesium as the main component in a long-period stacking ordered structure promotes bone formation in a rabbit tibia fracture model an

Bone growth alterations resulting from application of CO2 laser beam to the epiphyseal growth plates. An experimental study in rabbits.

The CO2 laser beam was used to create defects 3 mm in depth in the distal growth plate of one femur in a group of 59 rabbits. In most of the 32 rabbits in which the defect was created on the lateral aspect of the epiphyseal plate the procedure resulted in the subsequent development of valgus deformity and shortening of the femur. In most of the 27 rabbits in which defects were produced both medially and laterally to the epiphyseal plate there was a subsequent marked shortening of the bones. Histological studies revealed that the laser-induced defects of the growth cartilage led to epiphysiodes
