The whistling face syndrome, or craniocarpotarsal dysplasia. Report of two cases in a father and son and review of the literature.

Two cases of "whistling face syndrome" with the typical manifestations in the face, hands, and feet in a father and son are presented. From studying them over a 3-year period and from reviewing 46 reported cases, we conclude that (a) hand and foot deformities do not improve spontaneously with growth and better results are achieved by early surgery, (b) decreased intermaxillary distance contributed more than intercommissural distance to feeding and anesthetic difficulties in our patients, and (c) thickened and contracted joint capsules and myopathic changes are thought to form the basic patholo

Osteosclerosis of the phalanges in Werner syndrome.

Werner syndrome is an autosomal-recessive disease characterized by premature aging, shortness of stature, scleroderma-like skin changes, endocrine abnormalities, and cataracts. Although radiographic findings have been well documented, the presence of distinctive osteosclerotic changes in the phalanges of the hands and feet has not been emphasized in previous publications. The authors' review of radiographs of both hands in nine patients and of both feet in six patients with Werner syndrome documented the frequent occurrence of phalangeal sclerosis related predominantly to endosteal thickening.

Familial syndromic duodenal atresia: Feingold syndrome.

Familial duodenal atresia occurs as part of Feingold syndrome. Other features of this variable autosomal dominant condition include tracheo-oesophageal fistula and oesophageal atresia, microcephaly, hand and foot anomalies, facial dysmorphism, and developmental delay. We report a father and two sons with Feingold syndrome. One has bilateral dysplastic kidneys which have not been reported previously.

Two Cases of Preaxial Polydactyly of the Foot: Important Implications for Plastic Surgeons.

Although polydactyly is quite common in general, preaxial polydactyly of the foot is rare (0.4 per 10,000 patients) and specifically associated with certain congenital abnormalities and syndromes, which can include craniosynostosis, corpus callosum agenesis, and renal malformations. We present 2 recent cases of preaxial polydactyly of the foot that highlight the importance of maintaining a high level of suspicion for associated abnormalities in these patients. The first patient, who presented with supernumerary preaxial digits on both feet, pre- and postaxial polydactyly of the hands, was also

Early Adverse Events predict Survival Outcomes in HER2-positive Advanced Breast Cancer Patients treated with Lapatinib plus Capecitabine.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the impact of early adverse events (AE) following the initiation of lapatinib plus capecitabine on the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) outcomes of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive advanced breast cancer (ABC) patients. Methods: A secondary analysis of participants treated with lapatinib plus capecitabine, or ado-trastuzumab emtansine in the clinical trial EMILIA was conducted. Cox proportional hazard analysis was used to assess the impact of AE occurring within the first 42 days of lapatinib plus cape

Prenatal Diagnosis of a Splice-Site Variant in UBA2: Expanding the Clinical Spectrum of UBA2-Related Disease.

We report a case of a paternally inherited novel splice site variant in a patient prenatally diagnosed with Aplasia Cutis Congenita and Ectrodactyly (ACCES) syndrome with isolated split hand and foot malformations confirmed at birth. Intrafamilial variability has been previously reported in UBA2-related syndromes and malformations. We suggest that the rising number of reported UBA2 variants associated with isolated split hand/ft malformations without a full ACCES phenotype highlights the functional importance of UBA2 in distal limb morphogenesis.

Homozygous nonsense mutation of WNT10B gene in a Moroccan family with split-hand foot malformation identified by exome sequencing: a case report.

Split-hand foot malformation (SHFM) is a clinically heterogeneous congenital limb defect affecting predominantly the central rays of hands and/or feet. The clinical expression varies in severity between patients as well between the limbs in the same individual. SHFM might be non-syndromic with limb-confined manifestations or syndromic with extra-limb manifestations. Isolated SHFM is a rare condition with an incidence of about 1 per 18,000 live born infants and accounts for 8-17 % of all limb malformations. To date, many chromosomal loci and genes have been described as associated with isolated

Severe Skin Disorders Due to Sorafenib Use After Nivolumab Treatment in Renal Cell Carcinoma Patients.

BACKGROUND: We report two cases in which severe skin disorders developed during sorafenib treatment in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) who had previously received nivolumab. CASE REPORT: Case 1: A 50-year-old man with RCC received nivolumab as the fifth-line therapy followed by sorafenib as the sixth-line therapy. On day 15 of sorafenib administration, the patient was hospitalized with systemic erythema multiforme, acne-like skin rash, and hand-foot syndrome. Case 2: A 40-year-old man with RCC received nivolumab as the second-line therapy followed by sorafenib as the fifth-line treat

Cheirobuccopedal syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Restricted sensory syndrome provides an excellent chance for the understanding of neuroanatomic correlation. The trigeminal nerve has been shown to convey buccal sensory impulse to central compartment. However, the pathway between cortex and the trigeminal sensory nucleus remains largely unknown. METHOD: A patient presented with cheirobuccopedal syndrome, or objective sensory impairment confined to the left intraoral cheek, hand and foot, was reported. RESULTS: Decrease in pinprick pain and fine touch sensation was detected at the left intraoral cheek, hand and foot. A recent inf

Split hand-foot malformation, tetralogy of Fallot, mental retardation and a 1 Mb 19p deletion-evidence for further heterogeneity?

Congenital limb malformations are the second most common birth defects observed in infants. Split hand foot malformation (SHFM), also known as central ray deficiency, ectrodactyly and cleft hand/foot, occurs isolated or in combination with other malformations. We report on a male patient with SHFM, tetralogy of Fallot and a clinical phenotype suggestive of Angelman syndrome. Using array based genome analysis (3K BACs and 500K SNPs), we identified a de novo deletion of chromosome 19p13.11, confirmed by Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization analysis. The deletion is 0.99 Mb in size and contains 28 g

Rectal atresia as rare manifestation in EEC syndrome.

A newborn boy presented with bilateral split hand/foot malformation, sparse hair, dry and scaly skin, and nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Despite absence of cleft lip or palate, the findings fit the EEC syndrome. Additionally, the boy had rectal atresia. At least six further patients with EEC syndrome and anal atresia (two published, four unpublished) demonstrate, that anorectal malformation is a further, but rare anomaly in EEC syndrome.

Going toe-to-toe with a rare case of a complex regional pain syndrome limited to the hallux.

We report the first case of a complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) limited to the hallux using the Budapest criteria. Limited forms of CRPS are scarce in the literature and probably overlooked. There is currently no consensus to define these forms. Due to the particular metameric topography, common to the hand and the foot, we suggest the term 'metameric' CRPS to describe them. A uniform nomenclature would promote future research to study its prevalence and specific treatment in more detail.

Bladder neck incompetence in patients with spinal cord injury: significance of sympathetic skin response.

PURPOSE: We investigated whether recording the perineal sympathetic skin response, which reflects the sympathetic function of the thoracolumbar spinal cord, represents a reliable and accurate diagnostic tool for assessing bladder neck competence and incompetence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared the sympathetic skin response recorded from the hand, foot and perineal skin with urodynamic findings in 90 patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction, including 66 with spinal cord injury and 24 with cauda equina lesions. RESULTS: Video urodynamics revealed an incompetent bladder neck in 11 of 3
