Lesions in the central nervous system associated with perinatal lamb mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe the occurrence of neurological lesions that could have an effect on lamb mortality. PROCEDURE: The central nervous system was investigated macroscopically (n = 92) and microscopically (n = 72) in lambs dying in the perinatal period during 3 years in flocks of adult Corriedale ewes. The central nervous system was removed intact and samples of cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, thalamus, hippocampus, mesencephalon, cerebellar cortex, medulla oblongata, and cervical spinal cord were scored microscopically for the severity of neuronal dead, cytotoxic and perivascu

Causes of mortality in the Florida panther (Felis concolor coryi).

Panthers necropsied at the University of Florida ranged between 2 weeks and 14 years of age; there were 38 males and 17 females in the cohort. Main categories of causes of death included trauma inflicted from either vehicular collisions (43%) or territorial fights (16%). Specific endogenous diseases involved the respiratory system in 13%, the urinary system in 4%, and the central nervous system in 2%. Ostium secundum atrial septal defects (ASD) were diagnosed in 11% of the panthers necropsied. Seventeen (54%) of the 38 male panthers had either unilateral or bilateral cryptorchidism. Cause of d

The association of occipitocervical dissociation and death as a result of blunt trauma.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Despite multiple reports of survivability, dissociative occipitocervical injury (OCI) is generally accepted to be fatal in most cases. The actual number of trauma victims where OCI may have made the difference between life and death is unknown because multiple studies have shown that these injuries can be missed with current diagnostic methods. An improved understanding of the relative importance of OCI in blunt trauma mortality may help to refine protocols for the assessment and treatment of patients who arrive alive to the emergency room after severe blunt trauma. One way

Delayed Horner's Syndrome After Multiple Penetrating Stab Injury of the Neck.

Horner's syndrome is characterized by a triad of symptoms (ipsilateral miosis, ptosis, and anhidrosis) with damage of the sympathetic nervous system. The condition may be congenital or acquired from traumatic conditions including cardiovascular surgery. Horner's syndrome can be also caused by neck trauma especially when cervical vital structures such as blood vessels, the aerodigestive tract, and nerves are disrupted. This report describes a 16-year-old woman with delayed Horner's syndrome who initially presented with internal jugular vein injury caused by multiple penetrating stab injury to t

Oxidant stress and signal transduction in the nervous system with the PI 3-K, Akt, and mTOR cascade.

Oxidative stress impacts multiple systems of the body and can lead to some of the most devastating consequences in the nervous system especially during aging. Both acute and chronic neurodegenerative disorders such as diabetes mellitus, cerebral ischemia, trauma, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and tuberous sclerosis through programmed cell death pathways of apoptosis and autophagy can be the result of oxidant stress. Novel therapeutic avenues that focus upon the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI 3-K), Akt (protein kinase B), and the mammalian target of rapamycin (m

Lithium and cognitive enhancement: leave it or take it?

RATIONALE: Lithium is established as an effective treatment of acute mania, bipolar and unipolar depression and as prophylaxis against bipolar disorder. Accumulating evidence is also delineating a neuroprotective and neurotrophic role for lithium. However, its primary effects on cognitive functioning remain ambiguous. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to review and combine the relevant translational studies, focusing on the putative cognitive enhancement properties of lithium, specifically on learning, memory, and attention. DISCUSSION: These properties are also discussed in reference to

Posttraumatic stress disorder from pentaborane intoxication. Neuropsychiatric evaluation and short-term follow-up.

Fourteen individuals briefly exposed to a toxic industrial compound, pentaborane, were evaluated for neuropsychiatric abnormalities four to 12 weeks after exposure. Results of physical, neurological, and routine laboratory evaluations were normal. Initial and persistent psychiatric symptoms, neuropsychological deficits, electroencephalographic changes, elevated central nervous system neurotransmitter levels, and ventricular brain ratios (computed tomographic scan) provide evidence of central nervous system damage. Seven patients met diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual

[Multidimensional analysis of cranio-maxillofacial joint-neural interactions and their clinical significance].

The interplay between the skeletal and nervous systems has emerged as a pivotal area in modern medical research. Unlike mesodermal-origin trunk skeletons, craniofacial bones demonstrate distinctive neurobiological properties due to their unique embryonic origin from ectodermal neural crest cells. This article systematically investigates the interaction mechanisms between craniofacial bones and the nervous system across developmental, anatomical, and functional dimensions. It comprehensively elaborates the translational value of this neuro-skeletal association in advancing precision diagnosis a

Increased neural sympathetic activation in fibromyalgia syndrome.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, although the mechanisms underlying the pain have not been fully elucidated. FM patients describe a number of nonspecific symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, and gastrointestinal complaints, which appear after a flu-like illness, or after physical or emotional trauma in half of the patients, and are often exacerbated by exertion, stress, lack of sleep, and weather changes. There may also be symptoms of orthostatic intolerance, which suggests underlying abnormalities in cardiovascula

[Polyvagal theory and emotional trauma].

According to the polyvagal theory, the autonomic nervous system can, in deviation from the conventional theory, be divided in three distinct parts that are in hierarchical relationship with each other. The most-primitive autonomic control results in depression of vital functions, the more evolved one in fighting or escape and the most evolved one in social involvement. Practical application of the polyvagal theory has resulted in positive results above all in the treatment of emotional trauma. in Finland, therapy of complex trauma is founded on the theory of structural dissociation of the pers

Birth injury of the cranium and central nervous system.

Birth injury of the scalp, skull and central nervous system (CNS) is a well-recognized complication of a difficult delivery. The rate of birth trauma has dropped precipitously and now accounts for less than 2% of neonatal deaths. Despite this dramatic decrease in birth-trauma mortality significant injuries still occur. A variety of risk factors clearly predispose certain infants to birth-related injury. Recent neuroradiology studies indicate that intracranial hemorrhage, even in asymptomatic infants, is not rare. Pathologists' (neuropathologists and forensic pathologists) appreciation of the s

Remote spinal trauma resulting in dorsal column spinal pathway dysfunction and anejaculation.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) as the cause of anejaculation is a rare entity. We present the case of a 65-year-old male with a five-year history of intractable anejaculation. Two years prior to onset of his anejaculation, the patient fell from height, causing minor spinal trauma, with sequelae of cervical myelopathy and eventual posterior spinal fusion of C1/C2. Biothesiometry and sensory evaluation revealed diminished somatic sensation of his glans penis in a frequency-dependent pattern. The patient's pudendal sensory loss and anejaculation correlate with his spinal trauma, as evidenced by the lac

Bilateral sixth nerve palsy after head trauma.

Gaze deficits are not uncommon after head trauma and might be caused by injury to the central nervous system, the peripheral nerve, or the motor unit. Traumatic bilateral sixth cranial nerve palsies are a rare condition and are typically associated with additional intracranial, skull, and cervical spine injuries. We describe a case of a complete bilateral sixth nerve palsy in a 44-year-old male patient with trauma with no intracranial lesion, no associated skull or cervical spine fracture, and no altered level of consciousness. The emergency physician should be aware of the differential diagno

Free latissimus dorsi flap used in treatment of cerebral aspergillosis: a case report and review of the literature.

Cerebral aspergillosis infection is a rare disease in children that carries extremely high morbidity and mortality. Although occurring most commonly in the immunosuppressed patient, cerebral aspergillosis infection has been reported after trauma or neurosurgical procedures. Amphotericin B is the main medical therapy for cerebral aspergillosis. However, surgical treatment is often required for cases of abscess or granuloma formation. Despite aggressive antifungal treatment and surgical intervention, aspergillosis of the central nervous system is often fatal. We present a case report in which a

[Arthropathy as a late result of trauma (author's transl)].

On the basis of 5 cases the syndrome of post traumatic arthropathy is described. Like its other forms it shows radiographyically a high degree of osteolysis, fragmentation and para-articular calcification of soft parts. The picture is similar to that of syringomyelia and tabes. If trauma occurs in childhood there will also be developmental retardation. One has to assume that trauma may be responsible for these isolated arthropathies at its site. Since the further course corresponds to that of a neurogenous arthropathie it is likely that in these cases there is an underlying disturbance of the

[Evoked potentials in patients with myofascial pain syndrome in the late residual period of natal cervical trauma].

Evoked potentials (EP), including short-latency brainstem auditory and somatosensory EP, have been studied in 80 patients with myofascial pain syndrome. Brainstem dysfunction, predominantly on the ponto-mesencephalic level, and conduction delay in the somatosensory pathway on the supraspinal level have been found in patients with natal trauma of cervical spine, being most significant in patients with severe myofascial pain syndrome. EP findings showed impairments of afferent structures of nervous system and inefficiency of antinociceptive system of supraspinal level in this group of patients t

Neuromonitoring Identifies Occlusion of Femoral Artery in STA-MCA Bypass Procedure: A Case Report.

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is a technique used to assess the somatosensory and gross motor systems during surgery. While it is primarily used to detect and prevent surgically induced nervous system trauma, it can also detect and prevent injury to the nervous system that is the result of other causes such as trauma or ischemia that occur outside of the operative field as a result of malpositioning or other problematic physiologic states. We present a case study where a neuromonitoring alert altered the surgical procedure, though the alert was not correlated to the site

Machine-Learning Analysis of Serum Proteomics in Neuropathic Pain after Nerve Injury in Breast Cancer Surgery Points at Chemokine Signaling via SIRT2 Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Persistent postsurgical neuropathic pain (PPSNP) can occur after intraoperative damage to somatosensory nerves, with a prevalence of 29-57% in breast cancer surgery. Proteomics is an active research field in neuropathic pain and the first results support its utility for establishing diagnoses or finding therapy strategies. METHODS: 57 women (30 non-PPSNP/27 PPSNP) who had experienced a surgeon-verified intercostobrachial nerve injury during breast cancer surgery, were examined for patterns in 74 serum proteomic markers that allowed discrimination between subgroups with or without

Pediatric giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath of the craniocervical junction involving the occipital condyle.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS), also called pigmented villonodular synovitis, is a common lesion of the synovial membrane of the hand joint, but it uncommonly involves the axial skeleton, especially in pediatric populations. Furthermore, GCTTS originating from the occipital condyle has not been reported previously. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old girl presented with a palpable neck mass for 1 year, and imaging studies revealed a less demarcated and heterogeneously enhanced mass in the suboccipital region. The tumor was originating from the occipital condyle that eroded
