Towards New Approaches to Evaluate Dynamic Mosaicism in Ring Chromosome 13 Syndrome.

Individuals with ring chromosome 13 may show characteristics observed in a deletion syndrome and could present a set of dismorphies along with intellectual disability, according to chromosomal segments involved in the genetic imbalance. Nevertheless, ring anomalies likewise is called "dynamic mosaicism", phenomena triggered by the inner instability concerning the ring structure, thus leading to the establishment of different cell clones with secondary aberrations. Phenotypic features, such as growth failure and other anomalies in patients with this condition have been associated with an inhere

Enamel Pit Defects and Taurodontism in a Patient with Ring Chromosome 14 and 47,XXX.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the clinical findings and management of a case involving a patient with co-occurring ring chromosome 14 syndrome and 47,XXX presenting with enamel pit defects and taurodontism. Ring chromosome 14 syndrome is an unusual condition with uncontrolled seizure disorder as its most significant finding; 47,XXX (trisomy X; triple X) is a more common condition and has characteristic physical and behavioral findings. Neither condition has been associated with enamel pit defects.

Prenatal diagnosis of a fetus with ring chromosomal 15 by two- and three-dimensional ultrasonography.

We report on a prenatal diagnosis of ring chromosome 15 in a fetus with left congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and severe intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). A 31-year-old woman, gravida 2 para 1, was referred because of increased nuchal translucency at gestational age of 13 weeks. Comprehensive fetal ultrasound examination was performed at 19 weeks revealing an early onset IUGR, left CDH with liver herniation, and hypoplastic nasal bone. Three-dimensional ultrasound (rendering mode) showed low set ears and depressed nasal bridge. Amniocentesis was performed with a result of a 46,XX,r(

Ring 2 chromosome associated with failure to thrive, microcephaly and dysmorphic facial features.

We report here a child with a ring chromosome 2 [r(2)] associated with failure to thrive, microcephaly and dysmorphic features. The chromosomal aberration was defined by chromosome microarray analysis, revealing two small deletions of 2p25.3 (139 kb) and 2q37.3 (147 kb). We show the clinical phenotype of the patient, using a conventional approach and the molecular cytogenetics of a male with a history of prenatal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), failure to thrive, microcephaly and dysmorphic facial features. The phenotype is very similar to that reported in other clinical cases with rin

Molecular cytogenetic and phenotypic characterization of ring chromosome 13 in three unrelated patients.

We report on the cytogenetic and molecular investigations of constitutional de-novo ring chromosome 13s in three unrelated patients for better understanding and delineation of the phenotypic variability characterizing this genomic rearrangement. The patient's karyotypes were as follows: 46,XY,r(13)(p11q34) dn for patients 1 and 2 and 46,XY,r(13)(p11q14) dn for patient 3, as a result of the deletion in the telomeric regions of chromosome 13. The patients were, therefore, monosomic for the segment 13q34 → 13qter; in addition, for patient 3, the deletion was larger, encompassing the segment 13q14

Clinical, cytogenetic and molecular characterization of two cases of mosaic ring chromosome 13.

The occurrence of mosaic ring chromosome 13 is rare. The mechanism of ring chromosome formation is usually associated with loss of genetic material. We report 2 cases of mosaic ring chromosome 13, resulting in deletion of 13qter. The first patient, a 15 year-old boy, presented a delayed psychomotor development, mental retardation, dysmorphic features and bleeding disorders associated with a de novo terminal 13q34 deletion. The second case was a foetus of 31 weeks with prenatal diagnosis of severe malformation such as holoprosencephaly, congenital cardiac defects, gastro-intestinal abnormalitie

Selective cognitive impairment and tall stature due to chromosome 19 supernumerary ring.

Small supernumerary marker chromosomes (sSMC) occur with a frequency of approximately 0.4 per 1000 newborns and are more frequent in the population with mental retardation and/or with dysmorphic signs. Small supernumerary chromosome rings (sSCR) usually occur as apart of a mosaic karyotype (Liehr et al., 2004). Chromosome 19 supernumerary rings are very rare. Almost all cases of sSMC19 have been reported on Thomas Liehr's website (http://www.med.uni-jena.de/fish/sSMC/19.htm#Start19). Of these cases, 14 were with phenotypic abnormalities and a clear characterization of the sSMC; two cases were

Mix gonadal dysgenesis associated with ring Y chromosome mosaics in a phenotypic male.

Ring chromosomes are present in 1 in 25,000 human fetuses; 99% arise de novo while less than 1% of rings are inherited. This chromosomal rearrangement may arise through a cytogenetic mechanism involving breaks in chromosome arms and fusion of the proximal broken ends, leading to a loss of distal material. Most patient Y ring chromosomes are present in a 45,X/46,X,r(Y) mosaic karyotype; molecular analyses of infertile men have shown that it is not rare to find r(Y) in these patients. However, the clinical spectrum in those cases with a 45,X cell line is broad and depends on the percentage of th…

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: report of a case with a variant ring chromosome and metastases following pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The most frequent molecular abnormality observed in dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is the formation of a supernumerary r … mosome. CONCLUSIONS: Cryptic rearrangement of chromosomes 17 and 22 should be suspected in variant ring chromosomes and translocations. Pregnancy may contribute to accelerated growth of DFSP, and delay in surgical resection should be avoided.

Boy with a ring 7 chromosome: a case report with special reference to dermatological findings.

A ring chromosome 7 was found in an 8-year-old boy investigated on account of short stature and facial dysmorphism. He had a fair skin, almost white hair, cafe-au lait spots and many black atypical pigmented naevi. Electron microscopy of his skin revealed structural changes in melanocytes and keratinocytes, suggesting disturbed cell growth and differentiation.

Amelia, dextrocardia, asplenia, and congenital short bowel in deleted ring chromosome 4.

We report a female baby with multiple congenital anomalies including left upper amelia, congenital short bowel with malrotation and pseudo-obstruction, dextrocardia with situs solitus, patent ductus arteriosus, and a tiny atrophic spleen. Chromosome study showed de novo 46,XX/46,XX,-4, + r(4)(p16-->q22.3)/47,XX,4, + r(4) (p16-->q22.3), + del(4)(pter-->q22.3:). The clinical findings in the patient were probably caused by the interaction of partial trisomy 4pter-->q22.3 or 4p16-->q22.3 and partial monosomy of 4q22.3-->4qter. This karyotype and phenotype have not previously been reported.
