INTRODUCTION: Several strains of the free-living genus Acanthamoeba can cause granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE), a rare chronic and slowly progressive infection of the central nervous system (CNS), and Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), a sight-threatening eye infectious disease.
