Anterior segment optical coherence tomography in evaluation of severe fungal keratitis infections treated by corneal crosslinking.

PURPOSE: Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a relevant diagnostic tool in the evaluation of corneal changes following co … able to identify the extent and depth of the inflammation. This parameter seems more important than corneal pachymetry to ensure the safety of CXL procedures in infectious keratitis. CONCLUSIONS: The different behavior of inflamed tissue with respect to UVA irradiance could be the main point to understand the different postoperative outcome.

Antioxidant therapy in the treatment of experimental acute corneal inflammation.

To ascertain the effectiveness of topical antioxidant therapy on acute corneal inflammation, we have studied the effectiveness of topical treatment with a saline solution and with antioxidants such as 0.2% superoxide dismutase and 0.5% dimethylthiourea (DMTU) in a controlled experimental study. The evolution of the inflammatory process was evaluated by a multimodel approach, including computer-assisted planimetry of the corneal ulcer and infiltrate, ultrasonic pachymetry, luminol-amplified chemiluminescence and the study of corneal transparency by direct spectral spectrophotometry transmittanc

Characterization of the SKC mouse strain as a potential model for keratoconus.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KC) is a multifactorial disorder with unclear etiology, characterized by localized thinning and a cone-like protrusion of the cornea. The complex etiology of KC exacerbates the lack of an animal model. Previous studies by Tachibana et al. (2002) described an inbred mouse strain (SKC) with a spontaneous, androgen-dependent, cone-like corneal morphology. This study aimed to investigate the corneal phenotypes of SKC mice through an in-depth ophthalmic examination. METHODS: Mice (n=53) were examined via slit lamp biomicroscopy with fluorescein staining. Spectral-domain op

Patient experience and repeatability of measurements made with the Pentacam HR in patients with keratoconus.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether the repeatability of measurements with the Pentacam HR in patients with keratoconus is improved by patients gaining more experience of the measurement situation. Such an improvement could enhance the accuracy with which progressive keratoconus can be detected. METHODS: Four replicate measurements were performed on Day 0 and on Day 3. Parameters commonly used in the diagnosis of progressive keratoconus were included in the analysis, namely the flattest central keratometry value (K1), the steepest central keratometry value (K2), the maximum keratometry value (

[Detection of Subclinical Keratoconus].

The early stage of a keratoconus (KC), without classic and characteristic clinical findings, is a contraindication for refractive surgery. This article therefore shows, in accordance with the current state of the art, ways of identifying risk factors for subclinical keratoconus. After delimitation, this publication contains a current summary of epidemiology, etiology and pathophysiology of subclinical and clinical KC. Furthermore, an overview of different grading scales is given. A detailed description of several practical possibilities for detection of subclinical KC is the focus of this publi

[Diagnostic Approaches to the Cornea (Part 2) - From Conventional Techniques to Advanced Imaging].

The cornea plays a pivotal role in visual quality, accounting for most of the eye's refractive power. It is also frequently affected by a wide range of pathological conditions. Accurate diagnostics are therefore fundamental for making therapeutic decisions. This review provides an overview of established and emerging methods for examining the cornea, ranging from corneal pachymetry, assessments of the endothelium and nerves, anterior segment optical coherence tomography, and biomechanical measurements. Advances in high-resolution imaging and multimodal platforms have significantly improved the…

PPIP5K2 and PCSK1 are Candidate Genetic Contributors to Familial Keratoconus.

Keratoconus (KC) is the most common corneal ectatic disorder affecting >300,000 people in the US. KC normally has its onset in adolescence, progressively worsening through the third to fourth decades of life. KC patients report significant impaired vision-related quality of life. Genetic factors play an important role in KC pathogenesis. To identify novel genes in familial KC patients, we performed whole exome and genome sequencing in a four-generation family. We identified potential variants in the PPIP5K2 and PCSK1 genes. Using in vitro cellular model and in vivo gene-trap mouse model, we fo
